Blame is not in short supply for this loss but for the second game in a row, a late base running blunder cost the Giants a chance for a win. Key Lines:
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 3, HR(7). BA= .251. YtY led off the Giants half of the first inning with a HR onto the metal roof of the RF arcade to give Logan Webb RHP an early lead.
Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 5. Heliot had 2 of the Giants 5 hits. YtY's HR was the only XBH. Heliot also had a quick release on a ball down the LF line and threw out the runner trying to stretch it into a double.
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 0 for 1, 2 BB, HBP. BA= .252. Lee drew two walks. After the first, he was thrown out stealing at 2B. The Giants entered the 9'th inning trailing 4-2. Lee drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. A Sac Fly by Adames drove in one run and both trailing runners moved up. Patrick Bailey then lined a single to LF driving in Dom Smith but Lee was thrown out by 20 feet trying to score behind Smith. Christian Koss lined out for the final out leaving the game tied for extra-innings and Camilo Doval's meltdown.
At least Devers out at home plate Tuesday was the final out of the inning Lee's gaffe took away an opportunity to score the walk-off run without a hit. The big question is whether these twin gaffes are on the runners or the third base coach. BTW, is it just me or does Jung Hoo Lee look like he's lost weight since the beginning of the season?
Casey Schmitt 3B- 0 for 3, HBP. BA= .276. In the department of Things That Can Go Wrong, Schmitt took a pitch off the ulnar side of his left hand and appeared to be in considerable pain as the game ended. Preliminary X-rays did not show a fracture but those may be repeated depending on how he feels this morning. It did not appear to be a purpose pitch but pitchers are clearly intentionally working to put pitches under Giants hitters hands and Schmitt was clearly frustrated as was Heliot Ramos who has a whole string of HBP's after his name. BTW, three Giants were HBP in this game alone.
Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 6 K's, 6/2 GO/AO. ERA= 2.52. Not Webb's best but a Quality Start that should have been good enough to win.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 1.69. As an inducer of weak, groundball contact, Rogers is going to have games where he gets BABIP'd. This was one of them.
Camilo Doval RHP- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K. ERA= 2.78. The Giants failure to secure a walk-off win in the 9'th set up Doval to pitch in extra innings. As we noted, Doval is now a contact pitcher which tends to work against him when he starts the inning with a runner at 2B.
Hayden Birdsong RHP tries to stave off a sweep this afternoon facing Janson Junk RHP. I have to say, that is quite a name, especially for a pitcher.
Frustrating game for sure. I thought Adames hit a walkoff grandslam in the 9th inning. I couldn't believe it. He had 2 balls caught at the fence tonight. If Lee held at 3rd in the 9th inning they would have had runners at 1st and 3rd with one out. Thats a big mistake being thrown out at home. Oracle seems like a tough place to hit at night Remjnded me of the article I read about the baseballs not carrying as far. I'd like to see the hitters make better contact hitting to the opposite field more. Oh well, better luck today.
ReplyDeleteSuddenly, we may now have to be in the market for a proven closer at the deadline as I don't Rodriguez quite yet ready to close. Whether or not, Schmitt hits the IL, it's time to bring back up Luis Matos to rotate with Lee with his current struggles and give Yaz some days off. I'm tired of our guys getting hit, I know Melvin won't do it but, I would have Ryan Walker "open" for Birdsong and have Walker hit Stowers in the ribs and if there is a suspension, so be it.
ReplyDeleteWhat Matt Williams did last night should be a fireable offense. I'd move Hallberg back to third base and get rid of Burrell while we're at it and make Damon Minor the interim hitting coach. Time to send Melvin a message by shaking up the coaching staff.
ReplyDeleteworst loss of tje year? Paradox: a great bullpen, but no dependable closer?
ReplyDeleteSucks to lose a game like this or like the one before against an inferior opponent but give them their credit. They had better at bats in the late innings and opted to have an up the middle approach as opposed to swing out of your shoes and fly out to the track approach. Matt Williams was my favorite Giant as a kid but he sucks at coaching third. I don’t even want to get into it those were two of the worst sends I’ve ever seen no defending them. Lotta Bro’s on this coaching staff and all led by a manager who isn’t instilling a ton of confidence with his IDK answers at the press conferences. “I wish I knew” shouldn’t be a go to answer when defending poor play and coaching. “We’re trying to win ballgames” isn’t an explanation as to why your third base coach makes horribly bad decisions that contribute to losing back to back games. This is a test to see if we can gel through some really potent adversity and a coaching staff that may have to change next year if this team is truly going to reach it’s potential.
ReplyDeleteThe more I've watched BoMel this year, the more I see that he may not be the answer at manager. If Melvin isn't gonna fire Williams, Posey should do it for him. Skip Schumaker would be on the top of my list if we have a vacancy next season.
DeleteI'm thinking Mark Hallberg would get consideration as Melvin's replacement since he played with Buster at FSU. I don't know much about him but his having served as a coach under Kapler and Melvin would expose him to analytic and old school thinking.
Deletea lot of great comments but what sends me into a decline (as they say down south) is 5 hits. five, cinco. vs the marlins. i'm going to leave it at that... -es
ReplyDeleteDoval is a contact pitcher with the lack of strike outs has obviously been worrisome all season and makes it seem obvious that there’s going to be regression in his numbers. Always knew that Walker wasn’t closer material, he had one great season as a 29 year old low leverage reliever and only had 10 saves then fans were calling him a great closer all of a sudden which was obviously premature. I said at the beginning of the season that the giants need to get a real closer. Problem is that there’s no legit closers available. Randy Rodriguez is having a great year but he’s definitely not closer material. Guy got hit around in the minor leagues and struggled despite great strike out numbers.
ReplyDeleteWhat an awful game.
ReplyDeleteIf the Sox fall as the trade deadline approaches, what are the chances of acquiring Aroldis Chapman? Not exactly the pitcher he once used to be, but absolutely can still pump out the heat, even in his late 30s.
