Spring Training Game Wrap 3/4/2023: Rockies 12 Giants 10

The Giants lost a typical Coors Field game.....oh wait!  This was in Arizona?  It was a typical Giants/Rockies game in which the Giants blew 7-1 and 9-4 leads and ended up losing the high-scoring game.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .462.  Lee has appeared in 5 of 8 spring games.  Giants probably want him to see as much MLB pitching as reasonable before the season starts.

Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .250.  YtY was delayed in playing in the field due to shoulder issue.  He's apparently completed his throwing program and cleared to play out there now.

J. D. Davis 1B- 2 for 3.  BA= .400.  Gotta feel for J. D. whose hot start at the plate may well have helped drive Chapman's price down and cost him a starting 3B job.

Patrick Bailey C- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .286.  Not spectacular, but Bailey has not done anything to lose the starting C gig so far.

Cooper Hummel PR/3B- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .375.  Hummel is an intriguing option for a utility/3'rd C role.

Nick Ahmed SS- 2 for 2.  BA= .625.  Ahmed came in hot and has all but won the starting SS gig to start the season which allows Luciano to get more salt in Sacramento, which he probably needs.

Brett Wisely 2B- 2 for 3, 2B.  bA= .214.   If Ahmed starts at SS and Luciano starts the season in Sacramento, Wisely could be in the mix for a backup MI role.

Spencer Howard RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.00.  In answer to SteveVA's possibly rhetorical question from yesterday, Howard and Jefferies were both once highly regarded pitching prospects who fell on hard times with injuries and/or poor performance. Interesting reclamation projects.

Cody Stashak RHP and Juan Sanchez LHP added scoreless frames in what was a rough day for pitchers.

Logan Webb RHP takes his third spring start tomorrow facing Forever Giant Jakob Junis RHP and the BrewCrew in Scottsdale.

  1. Where is Tyler Fitzgerald? I haven’t seen his name mentioned in a while.

  2. Earlier in his career Ahmed had some pop. If he can recapture even some of that offensive production that would be an added bonus to his defensive contributions.

  3. Doc is so right..You gotta feel for JD Davis...First off, at this point in time, a better player than a decaying Matt Chapman yet has no shot at the 3B job because of optcs and the lunacy of the front office....Still, the guy goes out and continues to rake which should raise his trade value to other teams but...wait..the few teams that need a 3B know the Giants have a glut of 3B and will likely offer the Giants little..thus Davis remains as a bench player or injury insurance unless the Giants give him away...Smart asset management............Nick Ahmed..the 2024 Randy Elliot??? IS Bart getting any ABs??

    1. I think Chapman is an upgrade at 3B. The question to me is how much of an upgrade and is it worth the cost?

    2. In batting statistics among "qualifiers" @ 3B last year, Davis was very much mid-pack, which would imply he is better than the player at that position for at least a third of the teams.
Does it make sense that, if no one wants Davis, maybe the Giants shouldn't either?
If just one team could upgrade with Davis, then SteveVA's pessimism is correct: it's sell-low on him.
But, perhaps more realistically, there are 2 or more teams that he could upgrade, providing some competition, and Davis will bring a fair value.
The Giants are likely to get someone better than Darin Ruf, who, @ 37 yo, is looking for a job now.
We should not forget that, for Ruf, the Giants got Davis, Carson Seymour RHP (#17 on Dr B's prospect list), Thomas Szapucki LHP (#35), and Nick Zwack LHP @ AA Richmond last year (perhaps SteveVA saw him pitch?).
Whatever SF gets for Davis, it's a plus.
Chapman is an upgrade offensively and defensively.

  4. Baseball is supposed to be fun and enjoyable. I am concerned that some of these posters are taking the moves made by this team a bit too personally. I am looking forward to baseball and watching my favorite team the San Francisco Giants.Go Giants!

    1. Well, while I am definitely still a fan, watching the Giants at the end of last season was not fun or enjoyable. What a mess! I think part of being a fan is the emotional investment in the team. When you see obvious upgrades that need to be made and management seems either unable or unwilling to make them, you have a right to express your displeasure. But yes, if we're doing that every post or every comment every day, it gets tiresome.

    2. ....and spring training is supposed to be the season of optimism.

    3. Alright, I will try to be more positive soon! I really don't take it personally or obsess about it elsewhere, just call it as I see it and I just don't understand or agree with SOME of the moves or non-moves recently (or the complete package). .Now is the tiem to do it! I'll give a huge positive post if they snag Snell/Monty...or a negative one if they lose out again! Anyways, During the season, I become much more of a Lets Go Giants fan and am rarely critical of the players.. BTW, I really do like the SOLER and Lee signings!

    4. For the most part, big, long-term deals with FA pitchers crater. Gausmans do happen. But the Giants have one 9-figure contract out to pitcher. And yep, after the 2012 playoffs, we're all are okay with it. But it was a disaster of a contract.

They also have a 9-figure extension to a pitcher. And that was a disaster.

We won't know how the future contracts of Snell and Montgomery will play out, but it's pretty clear right now that the risks outweigh the asking prices...

    5. Not just long term contracts. Lucas Giolito's $38 M contract with the Red Sox just went poof! Sonny Gray has a pulled hammy.

  5. I like the new coaching staff led by BoMel, Matt Williams, and Pat Burrell. They are "old school" baseball guys who played for the Giants who are trying to change the culture around the team. Don't know how many wins they'll get, but it was time to move on from Kapler. I'm going to trust BoMel and Matt Williams recommendation to sign Matt Chapman. They have experience coaching and managing Chapman with the A's. Chapman was bothered by a finger injury that may have hurt his hitting, so look forward to seeing his gold glove defense. I think it's FZ's job to go out and get the players BoMel wants.

    1. gotta give fz some credit: he jettisoned the whole failed system below him and jumped on "old style" management and now has the legion of pitchers arriving at the right time
his 2019 draft may be slightly better than a bust but he has a stable coming since -- with another "stopper" from FA picks, sf can win a lot of 2-3-run offensive games they couldn't win the last 2 years

    2. The Stopper FA remains to be seen.

  6. if they can't get a deal done with blake snell, they should mull a trade package around j.d. davis and joey bart for dylan cease. davis is their best trade chip if they are forced to get another start via trade route.

    1. It's going to take a lot more than J. D. Davis and Joey Bart to bring back Dylan Cease.

  7. Listened to Dan Schulman blue Jays broadcaster who said Chapman injured his finger in August so that can't be blamed for his down offense #s but the odd thing was that several blue Jays hitters including Vlad Guerrero had offensive #s that went down after renovations to their stadium were completed.

    1. The injured finger information is reason to be hopeful for a bounce back which is also suggested by secondary stats and projections. Intriguing information regarding "renovations". Something to watch for from BJ's hitters this season.
