Game Wrap 9/19/2023: D'Backs 8 Giants 4

The Giants jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning but it didn't last long as an obviously injured Alex Cobb was knocked around for 5 runs in 2 IP.  The Giants never caught up.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 1 for 2, 3B SF.  BA= .264.  LMWJ led off the game with a triple and scored on a SF by YtY.

Joc Pederson DH- 1 for 3, HR(14), BB.  BA= .248.  Joc added a run on a HR in the first inning.

There were not other XBH's and no Giants had more than 1 hit.

Alex Cobb RHP- 2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.87.  Cobb has been obviously hurting since the CG, almost no-hitter.  His final pitch looked painful. Time to shut him down.  Probably already should have been.

Alex Wood LHP- 5 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.60.  Not that this appearance was all that great but Wood has pitched much better in relief than in a starting role.  Is he willing to finish his career as a reliever?  If not, let some other team give him a chance to start.

The Loss drops the Giants 3 games behind the final Wild Card playoff spot.  With 11 games to go and 3 teams in front of them....it's over! They are not coming back!

Logan Webb RHP faces Merrill Kelly RHP tomorrow afternoon.

  3. The Giants have been hard to figure out , very streaky team. FZ said after the trade deadline that part of the reason they didn't make any moves to improve the team was to show confidence in the players they have which sounded like a good idea . but their veterans didn't come thru in clutch moments. I wish FZ could have made at least a small move to improve the team to show fans that the org wants to make the playoffs. Then again who knows what deals FZ walked away from maybe they would have been bad trades for the Giants.. I've read articles about ownership talking about breaking even and wanting to see an improved farm system, but nothing about doing what it takes to have a playoff team on the field which is concerning.. it sure looks like this team really let FZ down which is disappointing considering the faith FZ showed this team by not making any trades at the deadline. If this doesn't motivate FZ to make major changes to the roster or direction of the team by opening a handful of roster spots for rookies next year then nothing will. I'm hopeful that they will either sign a major free agent hitter or maybe trade for one from a team looking for salary relief. They might have the prospect capital to do it. Let's see the kids for the rest of the season!

    1. Very disappointing finish to the season. Hard to see ahead to what will turn it all around. The FA market is not strong, especially for hitters. Ohtani will be insanely expensive and risky. We'll dig deeper into it as soon as the season is over. There are some Asian players available. Maybe the Giants finally break through in that market? Their historical inactivity in signing Asian players is mystifying considering their history, geographic location and demographic makeup of the city.

    2. I also think Marco Luciano has to be the starting SS next season. If he is as good as he appears he should do fine if thrown into the battle. Injuries are a concern so they do need a back up but yeah, it's time to see if Marco is the future or not.

    3. I agree the trend in MLB is teams are bringing up their top prospects much quicker no more 400-500 abs in high minors . I can see Luciano at SS with veteran backup, and Harrison and Winn in the rotation in 2024. Giants are a team in transition..

    4. The Giants will not break through on the Asian market because they do not take the Asian community seriously, even though they are 35% of the population. Their response to the rash of Asian hate crimes in the city was largely crickets (did not fit their narrative). Giants presence in Asian communities is minimal. The Asian appreciation days are not high profile games, usually Tuesday night Colorado games. Food is limited to lumpia and a couple of boba stands. Not surprising considering who the President and CEO is. Since the Giants do not take Asian San Franciscans seriously, how can they expect to sign any Asian stars?

  4. Oh for the good old days when you knew who was starting at every position everyday! and guys came in for late innings to replace a starter. Giants are literally a team where even the players need to buy a program to see whose playing. I get analytics etc etc, but slide rule management does not know what a ball player looks like.
    Color me depressed in Winnipeg!

    1. I can still recite the starting lineup for the 1960's St Louis Cardinals.

    2. Hard to root for a team where you cannot stand the ownership, management, and half the players.

  5. The original sin of the season was standing largely pat. The giants lost quite a bit of war with the loss of Rodon about 6 WAR from a .500 team.

The additions of Haniger, Conforto, Manaea, Stripping, and Taylor Rodgers barely giving them 2 WAR.

Sure they could say Haniger and Conforto got hurt, that was to be expected with those guys. Zaidi is the right guy for the job but he keeps building these “if everything breaks right” teams.

He was brought in with the expectations that the Giants would be turned into a powerhouse, and it feels much more like an expensive mediocre version of the Rays right now.

    1. In fairness, FZ tried very hard to sign Judge and Correa. I don't think it's his fault they didn't work out. At this point it looks like it's probably a good thing they didn't.

    2. Well said Dr B, regarding Judge and Correa, however much it may have never really been a "real" possiblity, especially regarding Judge... We all know the roster shuffling is not "fun" for us fans but how much shuffling would there have been if everyone performed? Seems to me that K&Z did the best they could with what they had. Plan "C" just didn't work out. The next question would be, is roster building with injury prone players worth the gamble?

I'm not ready to quit on the K&Z or Giants however frustrating this season has been. Remember, it wasn't that long ago before the fanbase and "Fringe" was calling for B&S's removal and look how that eventually panned out!

Thanks for keeping us fans engaged, Dr B!

    3. i feel like the pieces from the farm system are there but, they need to be allowed to play everyday next year. i'd like to see j.d. davis come back next year in a prove it year since he is arbitration eligible. i'm hoping manaea and stripling can pitch well enough next year to get flipped.

    4. I’m starting to think some of it is ownership. While I am generally a fan of Larry Baer I have seen much more of the Greg Johnsons name in the news. I wonder if his reluctance to go over the luxury tax prevented Zaidi from going aggressively after Bellinger etc.

Also I’m still quite perturbed by Zaidi’s comments on the teams inability to attract free agents. The Bay Area is a tier 1 location. One of the few great places in America to be with mega millions.

How can it be so hard to sign big time free agents. The team is like 1/7 now. This has to be a failing of the Zaidi administration or ownership in general.

Sorry doc for all the pent up frustration I came into the season frustrated. I’m leaving it largely in the same spot. I don’t want to throw out the baby with the bath water but man am I annoyed.

    5. Angry Neighbor: I agree that poor performance and injuries were the root cause of the roster churn and endless bullpen games.

  6. Will be an interesting offseason. Could be Farhans last unless we make a dramatic improvement next year. Curious if that may spur more aggressive moves in the coming months.

  7. I have been wanting the kids all season, the only reason to want to go to the game is optimism of youth. Instead we kept rolling out the people I dont care to see and it got us probably the same place as if we rolled out the kids all game every game. In closing thank you so much DrB for having such an awesome site, but my towel is now waved. C u next year.
