Spring Training Game Wrap 3/4/2023: D'Backs 9 Giants 5; Brewers 14 Giants 2

The Giants got smacked around in both games of split-squad doubleheader.  On the brighter side, there were encouraging individual performances and most of the pummeling was at the expense of pitchers who are neither projected to make the team nor are considered top prospects.

Alex Wood LHP and Logan Webb RHP were the starters and looked sharp:

Wood- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 Ks.
Webb- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 5/0.

Notable offensive performers:

Michael Conforto DH- 2 for 2, HR(1), BB.  BA= .273.
Mitch Haniger RF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .300.
Steven Piscotty LF- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .500.
Grant McCray CF- 1 for 3, SB(1).  BA= .300.
Bryce Johnson CF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .300.

Alex Cobb will try to figure out pitch clock management in his second spring start against the Royals in Scottsdale this afternoon.

  1. Piscotty is making the statement he hasn't made since 2018 – OTOH he hasn't been healthy since 2018 either. His 6 hits leads the Giants.
He won't provide the RHB CFer if Slater isn't available. Even if Haniger does, the Giants will still have at least one LHB in the OF facing LHP –pretty much like things used to be.
Villar (0-11), YtY (0-4), Flores (0-3), and Pomares (0-2) as well as 8 more Giants are hittless. Villar has struck out 7 times without getting on base.
It's good playing split games as a lot more guys are getting ABs, but it's not helping to win games. Which is alright.

    1. Villar's start to spring training is not encouraging especially given his K tendencies last season. Hopefully they will keep running him out there until he either figures it out or proves he needs more salt in AAA.

    2. I am disappointed with Ramos so far as well. SSS I know. I wonder how his ABs looked. Has anyone read reports? Is this his last option year?

  2. It would seem to be advantageous for any team to schedule as many spring training games as possible, especially when you have lots of players in camp. is it possible to play three s.p. games in a day?

    1. Spring training is already way too long and two split squad days in a role is kinda ridiculous requiring lots of NRI players who have no realistic chance of making the team nor are they serious prospects.

    2. It seems we have a lot of players in camp. Might as well give them plate appearances and innings to pitch at this stage. Later, as we move towards April, they can focus on getting the regular guys ready for the season. It's nice to see, for example, Munguia, in action again.
