DrB's 2023 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #7 Aeverson Arteaga

Aeverson Arteaga SS.  DOB:  3/16/2003.  B-R, T-R.  6'1", 170 lbs.  IFA 2019.

2022(A):  .270/.345/.431, 35 2B, 14 HR, 11 SB, 8.7 BB%, 27.4 K%, 565 PA.

Slick fielding SS who looks like he can hit a little.  Smaller size did not prevent him from having the stamina to grind out a full season at age 19.  Trending on posts about potential 2023 breakout prospects.  If Marco Luciano has to move off SS as many expect, Arteaga looks like a solid bet to be the Giants SS of the future.

  1. If Luciano moves off SS as is widely anticipated, Aeverson Arteaga may well be the most important Giant in MiLB: at SS, there is Arteaga and then there is ?
Will Wilson already looks like a 2B.
There are some long shots on Doc's List: Diego Velasquez (19 yo) and Anthony Rodriguez (20 yo) are in the 40's.
Don't think Crawford was ever worse than #6 -- wasn't he always from his 4th round draft the Giant SS of the Future?
Is there another position so vital that doesn't have a couple of "high" prospects?
Question: Does moving a player through the system "too fast" cause permanent damage?

    1. Generally, Ehire Adrianza was rated higher than Crawford for the first years after Crawford was drafted, which may just reflect that Adrianza had been around longer and was a slick fielder.

  2. Next year Amed Rosario might be the most sensible FA SS out there. But advanced metrics don't like his defense that much. I think if Crawford shows he's still got it defensively and is near league average with the bat, it'll be easy to coax another year extension from him. Otherwise it's hoping Luciano's back is healthy so handle SS. If Arteaga takes a step back, the next guy is Ryan Reckley, who scouts think can stay at SS defensively.

    1. Keith Law says Arteaga has "a swing on which I'll gladly bet," but ZiPS is really down on him for next year. Why? Maybe because he's probably going to Eugene where the crappy weather can eat youngsters alive?
Giants should dump Eugene - the team even has to share facilities with the college team which adds to the negative meteorology. With many rainouts and early spring weather all year, development of youngsters can't be good. There has to be a better place!

    2. You mean Zips's projection for the MLB next year? It's down because he's only a 20-year old who hasn't even reached A+ yet.
