2019 Giants Draft Review: Round 1

 Round 1(#10 overall):  Hunter Bishop OF.  DOB:  6/25/1998.  B-L, T-R.  6'5", 210 lbs.

2019 Minors(2 teams):  .229/.438/.429, 5 HR, 7 SB, 38 BB, 39 K, 146 PA.
2021 Minors(3 teams):  .133/.286/.178, 8 BB, 22 K, 56 PA.
2021 AFL:  .262/.373/.381, 6 BB, 20 K, 42 AB.

Bishop is a guy with huge tools who was drafted out of a big junior season with Arizona St.  Potential red flags in college included high K rates and struggles against stronger competition.  We probably can't make too much out of his initial pro season which produced an extreme three true outcomes batting line.  2021 was mostly lost to injury.  His bat showed signs of life in the Arizona Fall League but still with an extreme K rate and the only HR he hit was in the Fall Stars game.  It's too early to call Bishop a bust, but 2022 will be a huge, almost make-or-break year for him.

What has to be frustrating for Giants fans is that Alek Manoah RHP was taken by the Blue Jays with the next pick and he's already pitching like a near-ace in the major leagues.  Bryson Stott SS was taken 4 picks later by the Phillies and hit .301 with 10 HR's in AA ball.  The Mariners got George Kirby RHP at #20.  He looks like he should break into the majors in 2022.

Most MLB drafts are made or broken at the top of the draft.  The Giants first two picks in this draft, Bishop and Wyatt have yet to find anything resembling traction in their professional development.  The most promising picks are a couple of bullpen arms from deep in the draft.  Of the hitters, Armani Smith shows the most promise and he's not exactly a sure thing.  Again, too early to write it off, but this draft is on bust watch.

  1. Thankfully, they have a full outfield and Ramos coming online this season. Wyatt and Bishop have been busts, as yet. Ditto Bailey. Hopefully Ramos, Bart, and Luciano can be great. I have little faith in the others.

    1. Agree the Giants have a strong farm system without Bishop and Wyatt, so at this point if either of them turn into something, it will be like found money. I just find it a bit disturbing that the Farhan era of drafting has produced Bishop, Wyatt, Wilson(essentially paid the Angels $12 M for a first round draft pick) and Bailey so far.

  2. I wasn't bothered when the Giants took Bishop in 2019 and Bailey in 2020 since they were good college players and those picks weren't reaches. Bishop ranked #7 in MLB pipeline and was picked #10 by Giants. Bailey was ranked #17 by MLB pipeline and picked #13 by Giants. Bishop bothered me last year since injuries limited his playing time. Seems like he was drafted high due to his physical tools and Seems like a high risk + reward pick. Interested to see how Bailey does this year. Wonder which catcher is the better defensive player Bailey or Bart? Catching prospects have a lot on their plate, and may need more development time. Bailey had back injury issues as well.
I'm liking the early returns on their pitching prospects like Kyle Harrison, Nick Swinney, RJ Davovich, and Will Bedner

  3. Happy New Year All. The Will Wilson trade was made because the Giants liked him as a prospect. They reportedly considered taking him at #10 instead of Bishop. The surprising thing is that Larry Baer and the owners approved spending $12 mil on a #1 pick since Cozart remained inactive due to injury. Bottom line the trade will be good if Wilson develops into productive MLB player.

    1. Correct. Unfortunately both Bishop and Wilson are looking very shaky as prospects although both still have time to rebound.

  4. Since there is no MLB transaction rumors to check out, looked at some Giants top prospect list and came across this name: Aeverson Arteaga 18 year old SS, 2019 international signee, ranked #12 in Giants system by MLB.com. it's an impressive ranking to me for an 18 year old. I'm wondering if this is another prospect that we should be excited about.

    1. The word on Arteaga was always great glove with possibly passable bat. His performance in AZ this season suggests he might be a lot more than that. Very exciting development in the farm system.

  5. The Giants are known to be familiar with the Carolina area and passed on George Kirby from Elon, Greg Jones of UNCW, Michael Busch of UNC - and all are current MLB top 100 prospects. I hope Bishop and Wilson make it because I was excited when they got those players.
