Spring Training Game Wrap: Giants 9. Reds 4

The Giants broke out the home run ball and showed speed on the basepaths in a dominating win over the Reds in Goodyear, AZ.  Game Notes:

LaMonte Wade Jr 1B started at 1B and had walk, HR and SB while scoring two runs.

Joey Bart C had a single, HR and SB and looked great behind the plate.

Jason Vosler 2B started at 2B and had two singles to raise his spring BA to .500.  He added a SB.

It was the best of times and the worst of times for Heliot Ramos LF/CF.  He hit two impressive HR's but had a brutal day defensively after moving from LF to CF mid-game with 2 drops and several very questionable routes.  In fairness, one of the drops came on glancing collision with RF Luis Alexander Basabe.  Not clear whose fault the miscommunication was.

The guys over at The San Francisco Giants Blog should be thrilled that Steven Duggar RF(Grave Duggar to them) hit an impressively long oppo field HR off Sean Doolittle LHP in the second inning.  Tough to see Duggar making the Opening Day roster, though.

Anthony DeSclafani RHP made his spring debut and worked the first two innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit.  His stuff looked good.

Sam Long LHP continued to impress coming in with the bases loaded and 2 outs to strike out Nicky Delmonico then cruise through the 8'th and final inning of the day recording 3 K's in 4 outs.  The signing of Jose Alvarez LHP to a $1.15 M major league deal probably sealed Long's trip to the minors to start the season but he's having a phenom spring so far.

Logan Webb RHP makes his second spring start today against the D'Backs in Scottsdale.  We have yet to see Kevin Gausman RHP or Aaron Sanchez RHP among members of the projected Opening Day Starting Rotation.

  1. Jose Alvarez looks like a nice signing. He's been a consistent left handed MLB reliever. I count 7 left handed relievers including Sam Long competing for spots in the bullpen. FZ must subscribe to the theory you can't have enough lefty pitchers. It'll be interesting to follow the progress of Jason Vosler and Lamonte Wade. Who knows if they will become the next Yaz, Solano, or Dickerson. The big question will be If any of their young prospects like Joey Bart or Heliot Ramos be significant players on their 2021 MLB roster and beyond. That could determine how FZ operates next off season with $100 million coming off the payroll and what might be an historical free agent class depending on players like lindor signing extensions with their current teams.

  2. Read your site as often as I can. It's enjoyable. I saw your mention of another blog when you spoke of Duggar. I have not been to The San Francisco Giants Blog before so I got on there too. I see that site gets a lot of comments, but I prefer yours. Not a knock or anything. Just personal preference. Thanks for your thoughts and your info.
