Spring Training Game Wrap: GIants 2 D'Backs 2

The Giants used a combination of power and speed for a come-from-behind tie in a game that went 9 full innings.  Game Notes:

Evan Longoria DH started the Giants scoring with a solo HR in the 7'th.  Arismendy Alcantara SS then drew a walk, stole 2B and came home on Lamonte Wade Jr's single.

Logan Webb RHP looked sharp in 2 innings of scoreless work with 3 K's and 0 BB's.  The Giants seem to be excited over his newfound command of the changeup.

Dedniel Nunez RHP worked a perfect 3'rd inning without any K's, but is drawing raves for a "wipeout" slider.

Shun Yamaguchi RHP seems to be on a good track for making the Opening Day roster as he struck out 2 in a scoreless 8'th inning.

Jimmie Sherfy RHP.  His 3'rd appearance did not go as well as his first two as he allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 BB's.

Alex Wood LHP makes his second spring start today against the Brewers in Phoenix.  We have yet to see Kevin Gausman RHP, Aaron Sanchez RHP or Scott Kazmir in game action.  Gausman and Kazmir reportedly looked sharp in live batting practice sessions yesterday.

Reyes Moronta RHP continues to labor in bullpen sessions.  Giants reportedly frustrated by his lack of conditioning and his velocity is not bouncing back to where it needs to be after his frightful shoulder injury and surgery.

  1. Steve Duggar hears footsteps and answers with home runs in consecutive games (he didn't play yesterday).
If he can continue that, well, not exactly that, the Giants can spot a pretty good LHB outfield against a RHP.
Or Ramos, Dubon, and Slater from the right side, but isn't that too many OFers, unless Dubon is a backup IFer also?

  2. There is no doubting that the talent pool has improved on this team over the last 3 years under FZ. It still feels a long way away from a team that can compete for the division and it will depend a lot on the guys that Bobby Evans drafted/signed for this to turn into a sustainable winner. Although it is a painful journey I think everyone will be happy when the pipeline is fully primed and the talent starts to show up. My biggest doubt is and will continue to be whether FZ has a clue how to draft players and evaluate talent in the draft. Small Sample Sizes aside, NONE of the guys he has drafted or acquired (Wilson) have looked good at all this spring. That is my biggest fear with FZ, that his talent evaluation skills are sub par and will cost us in the long run when nobody he drafts ends up being core players.

    1. I think all teams will hit and miss with their prospects. The Giants have missed on a few high picks from around 5-7 years ago, example Chris Shaw, Andrew Sularz which hurt their chances of staying competitive. FZ's prospects drafted and traded for lack experience at higher levels partially due to the lost minor league season. Hunter Bishop, Will Wilson haven't played above A ball, so too early to judge FZ draft picks. Part of the reason I'm looking forward to the minors starting up again.

    2. Agree with LG. The failure of AFW was not Brian Sabean's fault. The success of Cain, Lincecum and Bumgarner was not all to his credit. The draft "dry spell of the 2010's was not all his or Bobby Evan's fault. It's too early to get too excited about Evans last couple of drafts and international signings and it's way too early to give up on FZ's draft classes or Will Wilson. I also really like the 6'8" pitcher FZ traded for this offseason. And if you want to peer way into the future, the Giants are said to have all but signed one of the top international prospects for 2021, a 16 yo kid from Bahamas.

Agree with LG, can't wait for the 2021 minor league season to get some updated numbers on some very exciting Giants prospects.
