Spring Training Game Wrap: Giants 7 Cubs 6

The Giants held off a late rally by the Cubs to hang on for a 7-6 win.  Game Notes:

Donovan "Donnie Barrels" Solano 2B rapped out 3 hits and stole a base hitting third.

Wilmer Flores 3B hit is 2'nd HR of the spring for one of his two hits batting fourth.

Joey Bart PH/DH drew 2 walks and stole a base, his 2'nd SB of the spring.  Giants have now stolen 13 bases in their last 4 games. That's kind of odd.  Kap and his braintrust appear to be up to something with all the running.

Nick Tropeano RHP went 2 IP in his second start and 3'rd appearance.  He's allowed 1 ER in 4 IP for an ERA of 2.25.

Camilo Doval RHP allowed his first run of the spring in his 3'rd 1-inning appearance.

Sean Hjelle RHP threw a shutout inning and reportedly hit 95 MPH on the radar gun.

Luis Alexander Basabe's injury was diagnosed as a wrist sprain.

Johnny Cueto RHP makes his second spring start tomorrow against the Angels in Tempe, AZ.  Giants reassured nervous fans by saying both Kevin Gausman RHP and Aaron Sanchez  RHP are nearing their first spring starts.  Gausman  is expected to go on Friday.  Sanchez is starting late due to the late signing.  Both are still expected to be ready for Opening Day.  Thing spring training just might be a bit longer than necessary?

  1. I think the Giants will trade one of their IFs.

  2. The Giants suddenly have the potential (I say potential, because it's still early, small sample size and all) to have some very nice pieces to play with as FZ works to get the roster he wants. They are "nice" pieces, but not premium pieces, and I am betting many will be moved between now and the trading deadline to contending teams needing to fill holes in exchange for young players, preferably young arms. It would not be a surprise to see the Giants make five or six such trades between now and July.

Sitting in my armchair, it sure looks like the Giants can make several moves and still be a competitive 75 win team. So, as much as the 2021 season will be about figuring out just where guys fit and identifying those who don't fit in the 2022 plan, this season should have plenty of good moments. Win some games, jump up and bite a few contenders in important games and dream of which player or players the Giants add to the mix in the off season. And it gets better. Spring Training 2022 is going to be crazy good fun.

Imagine watching the competition for the outfield spots, with Matos, Bishop, Pomares and maybe Jaylin Davis and Steven Duggar fighting for the right to join Yaz and Ramos in the lineup....and don't forget Alexander Canario. Luciano will be on the cusp, Wilson will be near ready, Luis Toribio will get a look, and who will be there after signing a big FA deal? Maybe Correa, or Story, or my favorite Corey Seager. With Bart and Bailey the catching spot is in good shape.

The Giants seem to have put together a stable of young, high octane bullpen arms. Youngsters Sean Hjelle, Seth Corry. Nick Swiney and maybe Kyle Harrison will be around to show off. Logan Wyatt will have a full year under his belt. Maybe Kevin Gausman decides decides SF is his home. And, I think it is very likely there are one or two high end arms - either young guys or vets - added to the mix.

How much fun will it be? It's right around the corner. Start dreaming.
