Scouting the 2020 Draft: Tommy Mace

Tommy Mace RHP, College(Florida).  6'6", 200 lbs.

2018:  5-0, 4.16, 62.2 IP, 12 BB, 45 K.
2019:  8-5, 5.32, 89.2 IP, 38 BB, 74 K.

Classic pitcher's build with long arms and legs.  Loose, easy arm action.  High 3/4 release allows him to use height to get downward plane.  Main criticism is lack of a put away pitch.  Maybe that can be taught?  Stock could rise with a strong junior season.  Otherwise a team that believes in his projection may take a chance in round 2.

  1. Thank you Dr. B for all your scouting analysis and top 50 prospects. I started thinking there should be some sort of measurement for determining the value of a prospect in terms of his chances of impacting a major league lineup compared to what his trade value as a prospect is. One thing that has bothered me about the current managements style is that they seem to overvalue prospects when we all know that some prospects are for trade currency and some are for building around. Sabes and Evans to their credit pulled off quite a few trades that sent away prospects who have never done anything at the major league level.

It got me thinking about this offseason and in hindsight I think the Giants missed out on a few golden opportunities to upgrade and actually have a chance to be competitive this year. I am not as frustrated with the pitching moves that have been made so far but our offense is what needed a huge upgrade and their were plenty of options.

If I was the GM of the Giants with the hindsight of knowing what has happened this offseason, I think I would have done a few things differently.

    - Sign Rendon for 7 years $250 ($5 mil more than the Angels offered)
    - Trade for Villar (obviously not giving up any top 10 prospects but Miami didn't either)
    - Trade for Starlin Marte - May have taken Hunter Bishop to complete
    - Sign Ryu for 4 years 90 mil ($10 more than Toronto offered)
    - Sign Puig for 2 years $20 mil

Depending on how you structure those deals it would be around 90 million for the 2020 season which would put them upwards of $240 million for one year. The following would be less and after 2 years the total commitment would go down to around $55 for Rendon and Ryu. With Buster, Craw, Sharks, and Belt's contracts gone these deals wouldn't hurt long term. I feel like our pitching is going to be fine this year but offense has always been the challenge. This would give them potentially one of the top 5 lineups in the NL.

    Villar - 2B
    Marte - CF
    Rendon - 3B
    Puig - RF
    Yaz - LF
    Posey - C
    Belt/Longo - 1B
    Craw/Dubon - SS

Hindsight is 20/20 but other GM's were able to pull these deals off. It would have been fun to have a few players like Marte, Villar, and Rendon to watch this year and the pitching could have come around with a midseason upgrade or 2. All it would have taken was money and to trade a few prospects....
