Game Wrap 7/26/2017: Giants 2 Pirates 1

A terrific pitching performance by Jeff Samardzija and the Giants bullpen was enough to pick up a still struggling Giants offense.  Key Lines:

Joe Panik 2B- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .265.  Panik's double led to the first Giants run in the first inning.

Brandon Belt 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .328.

Buster Posey C- 1 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .328.  Looks like Buster is starting to get the Barry Bonds treatment.

Conor Gillespie 3B- 0 for 4.  BA= .164.  Why oh why is Conor Gillespie still on the team, let alone starting at 3B?  Do the Giants think they can gin up some trade value by playing him?  Just baffling!

Gorkys Hernandez LF- 2 for 4, SB(8).  BA= .249.  Hernandez is having a nice season, but he's never going to give the power the Giants need out of LF.  Everyday he starts out there, is one less day the Giants have to identify their LF for next season.  It can't be Gorkys Hernandez!

Miguel Gomez PH- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .294.  Not sure what Gomez has to do to get a trial as a starter at some position.  The rest of this season needs to be about getting a good look at players like him and see if they can be part of the future.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 8 K.  ERA= 4.85.  Lots of trade rumors.  Samardzija says he would veto a trade if he could.  There are 8 teams he does not have veto power over.  Houston is not one of them.  IMO, the Giants should not trade Shark unless the return is huge.  He is well worth his salary and it would be extremely difficult to find a better replacement.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(6).  ERA= 6.25.  Sell high on Dyson or keep him for next season?  Again, depends on the return.  It would have to be big for me to want him traded.

The Giants get tomorrow off, then try to cool off the Dodgers in LA this weekend with Matt Moore facing Alex Wood in the opener on Friday night.

  1. I'd love to see Ryder Jones get an extended look at 3B. Giants are kind of over a barrel at third for the next couple days with Hwang not eligible to come back yet and Kelby/Gillaspie on the roster.

  2. I would like to see Gomez get a couple starts a week at 2nd or 3rd to see what he's got. From reading your blog it seems like his defense has improved and the bat has always played at every level. I'd also like to see Kelby get a couple starts a week between the Inf. and CF. I don't think he has enough bat to be an everyday guy, but could be great as the 25th guy on the roster who can play everywhere with good defense and a solid bat and approach at the plate. I'd also like to see Shaw sooner than later to see what he's got.

  3. Gillaspie is at third till the Giants can winch up Sandoval from Sacramento, a player who has zero to do with their long-term future, any more than Gillaspie does, but who will divert the fans at no real cost to the team's budget. I assume that the plan is to play make-do at third till they can install Arroyo there in 2018.

  4. I'd be playing Gomez at 3B, not Gillespie, until Hwang comes back. See if he's got the short-area quickness for the position. But that's just me.

  5. They'll put Stratton on the DL Friday with some mysterious injury, that way they can bring Hwang up to play third. But that will only last until they can do the nastalgic thing and put Panda there to attract some of the fans they've lost because of how lousy this team has been this year.

Coach B, if Wotus was coaching Tomlinson would be playing more. Bochy would have NEVER double switched him at SS like Wotus did when he was in charge after Bochy's ejection. It's obvious he believes in Kelby while Bochy doesn't. I remember Bochy stating that he would get an extended look in LF. It hasn't happened. Okay, so he had a mental lapse and thought there were two outs. So what! That's minor compared to some brain farts the staters have had this year. To think that anyone the Fs have now or bring up can play better D at 3B than Tomlinson is laughable IMHO. At least give the kid the chance to prove he can't play there. He has exactly zero errors while playing there this season. As for his bat, he's a better hitter when getting regular ABs. I'll concur he's probably not an everyday guy, but he's sure as heck more than he's getting right now.

  6. I remember thinking the day Pablo signed with Boston, "Man, sure feels like the Party's over." And then Casey Mcgehee. (Who, BTW, is ironically having a pretty good season this year with the Yomiuri Giants. Dude likes Japan.)

If I understand Pablo's contract correctly, the Giants hold a 2018 & 2019 Team Option if Pablo is on the Major League roster at the end of 2017.

So, sure, let's see if there might be anything there. Odds are Slim & None, and Slim is saddling up...But the guy has/had such amazing skills. Due diligence. Let's be sure it's gone.

Ultimately, I'm kinda pulling for Ryder at 3B. Like to see a little power on the corner.
