Down on the Farm: 7/26/2017

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Round Rock Express 6-5:

Jarrett Parker CF/RF- 1 for 3, HR(3), 2 BB.  BA= .232.
Ryder Jones RF/3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .301.
Pablo Sandoval DH- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .333.
Chris Shaw LF- 2 for 4, HR(10), BB.  BA= .280.
Jose Flores RHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.03.

-Second HR in as many days for Parker who is hitting .279 over his last 10 games.  Wasn't he the guy who started the season in LF?  Does he maybe deserve another chance now that he is apparently fully healed from his injury?

AA  Harrisburg Senators downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 7-3:

Brandon Bednar 3B- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .278.
Tyler Herb RHP- 6.2 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.18.

-Bednar has been around seemingly forever, but is still only 25 yo which means he might still have a window to be a utility prospect.  Most likely just an organizational player though.  Seemed like there was some upside when he was drafted but the frame never filled out and the power never came.

High A  San Jose Giants outlasted the Modesto Nuts 4-3 in 13 innings:

Ryan Howard SS- 2 for 6, 2 2B.  BA= .322.
Jonah Arenado 3B- 2 for 6.  BA= .234.
Dillon Dobson 1B- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .232.
Gio Brusa LF- 2 for 6, 2B.  BA= .235.
Ronnie Jebavy CF- 3 for 6, 2B, SB(9).  BA= .270.
Matt Krook LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 6.11.
Matt Solter RHP- 4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.13.

-With the wasteland of a roster in Richmond, I would think maybe Howard and Reynolds at least should get a month in August to tune up for their 2018 AA seasons.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets were idle.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Eugene Emeralds 6-1:

Logan Baldwin RF- 3 for 5.  BA= .314.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 1 for 3, HR(5), 2 BB.  BA= .310.
Julio Benitez RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.62.
Garrett Cave RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.27.
Logan Webb RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.08.

- I still have pretty high hopes for Logan Webb who the Giants are bringing along slowly after TJ surgery.

*********************************************************************************

AZL  Giants outscored the Brewers 7-6:

Heliot Ramos CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .397.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 1 for 5, 2B.  BA= .339.
Ricardo Genoves C- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .261.
Nathanael Javier 1B- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .286.
Camilo Doval RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.38.
Keenan Bartlett RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.96.
Franklin Van Gurp RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.38.

-How exciting is it to have a tooled up kid like Ramos who seems to have a clue how to play the game in the Giants organization?

DSL  Giants beat the Blue Jays 4-2:

Raiber Gutierrez LF- 2 for 4, BB, HBP,  3 SB(9).  BA= .267.
Alex Canario RF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .303.
Franklin Labour DH- 2 for 5.  BA= .297.
Andrew Carabello 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .245.
Norwith Gudino RHP- 6.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.26.

-Alex Canario seems like another tooled up kid who is sustaining his BA deep into the DSL season.

  1. Heliot Ramos is 10 days younger than the newly acquired Gregory Santos. Both will be 18 in a little over a month.
How do the teams get a young player to the US from the Dominican Republic?
Is getting a visa to play ball an automatic thing?
Do the Giants put the young kids in a dorm or what?
There are a half dozen Dominicans (?) on the AZL Giants including one (Francisco Medina) from the same city.
There are many Venezuelans on the team as well, Spanish is definitely spoken!
Have you (or anyone on this blog) watched the AZL Giants play? Are they having the time of their young lives? Oh to be young WITH talent!

  2. Jarrett Parker: Why not while he's relatively hot and healthy: put him in the lineup, maybe lightening will strike.
Perhaps Giants are still "showcasing" potential trade-ables for another 4 games no matter how remote, just in case there is a last moment need.
Still Parker would seem to be more likely than Carlos Moncrief who (I think) was on the bench yesterday.
Will Cueto get a last chance to impress someone? If he can go it would be interesting to see him Sunday against the Dodgers.
Derek Law channeled Phil Regan last night allowing the tying run to score in the top 9th to grab the victory when Pabs scored in the bottom.
September may begin in August for SF within the bounds of 25 players until the rosters are expanded.

  3. If I was moving players up to AA...

    Quinn (RF)
    Garcia (C)
    Duggar (CF)
    Reynolds (CF)
    Howard (3B)

Probably too aggressive. Bui I look at the system as being full of failures and there's no reason to not prune a few out I think.

  4. I may be wrong, but it seems that the Giants have been drafting better and identifying better talent in the international market now that Sabean has been promoted to Executive Vice President from GM and is concentrating more on scouting. I know John Barr is basically the head of scouting and international signings, but Sabean's input seems to be helping a lot. Yes it is very exciting to have a dynamic player like Ramos in the system. I can't wait to see how he progresses in A ball. What I really can't wait for is for the Giants to draft a front line blue chip pitching prospect in next years draft. Its way to early, but there are three pitchers that could go top three at this point.
