Spring Training Game Wrap 3/4/2014: Giants 3 Padres 2

Giants starting pitching continued to sparkle as Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong went 3 innings apiece in a very Giants-like win over the team that plays in the Giants other home park.  Key Lines:

Juan Perez- 2 for 5.  BA= .429.  Juan isn't about to give up that 5'th OF roster spot without a fight.

Brandon Belt- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .600.  Brandon Belt loves to hit in Arizona.  Hey!  Save some of that for the regular season!

Tyler Colvin- 1 for 2, 2B.  BA= .222.  Colvin has had some timely hits in his quest for a roster spot.

Madison Bumgarner- 3 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  Bummy seems like he's about to climb into the ranks of the elite pitchers in MLB, if he isn't there already.

Ryan Vogelsong- 3 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  Vogey seems to have better command so far in the spring.

Edwin Escobar- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  With Yusmeiro Petit leaving the door cracked open, does Escobar have a chance to make the team the long reliever/spot starter?  The left-handedness sure has to be intriguing for Bruce Bochy who would then have 3 in the bullpen.

Love what the Giants SP's are doing in ST so far!

Great article by Baggs about Derek Law and his pop on CSN Bay Area website.

Around the League:

Speaking of self parody, Brian Wilson got the start for the Dodgers today in a bullpen game going 1 inning.  The first pitch he threw was a knuckleball……and it was a called strike!

  1. The starting pitching has been very steady lately. Nice effort from Vogey, and Bum seems like he's on a mission this year! Ok... he seems like he's on a mission EVERY year. I have to say, I really hope David Huff steps up. I know the best players should be on the field, but I really wouldn't like to see Escobar's development as a starter halted just yet. I think Fresno is the ideal starting spot for him this spring. And who knows, maybe Petit just needs a little time to get loosened up.

  2. Runzler has done well so far as well, speaking of lefthanders.

    1. Yes, Runzler has done well, but I have to think that there are quite a few pitchers in front of him on the depth chart who will have to fall by the wayside before the Giants trust him with a roster spot again.

    2. I think it would be best for the Giants to trade Runzler. He's got great talent, and if his time has finally come he deserves a fresh start. Man, could he every blow guys away when he first came up, and put up great stats with the Big League team, but he's had struggles since then.

He's got the tools, and if he can show control/command this Spring, someone would be willing to give him a shot in trade for a prospect. He'll just never make it with the Giants, too much history here..

  3. Okay, let's say Petit keeps it up (ERA) and Huff is slow to come around, who becomes the favorite to steal the coveted 6th starter/long man?

    1. A surprise challenger. Tall, lanky, left-handed. Jose De Paula!

  4. From reports of today's game, he sounds nasty. I think he's the reason Surkamp went bye-bye and reason for Petit to fret.

cain is hitting his spots and keeping batters off balance

when the pitching corp missed, they were missing low and i heard them induce two dps

craw was seeing the ball well, as was blanco and pence....morse hit the ball pretty hard

still a season of ifs...but as long as these guys stay healthy, we should be seeing good ball
