Down on the Farm: 8/7/2023

Full season leagues had their usual Monday off.

Complex Performances:

Bryce Eldridge RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .231.
Carlos Lopez LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 6.14.
Junior Flores RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(4).  ERA= 4.02.
Quinn McDaniel DH- 3 for 4, 2 HR, BB, SF.  BA= .286.
Guillermo Williamson 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, BB.  BA= .300.
Charlie Szykowny 3B- 2 for 6, SB(1).  BA= .208.
Nadir Lewis LF- 4 for 6, 2B, 3B, HR(1).  BA= .304.
Ryan Reckley SS- 3 for 5.  BA= .165.
Nicolas Herold RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 4.50.
Tommy Kane LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.17.

Nadir Lewis hits for the cycle.  Giants 20'th round draft pick this year out of Princeton.

Game Wrap 8/7/2023: Giants 8 Angels 3

The Giants erupted for 6 runs in the 9'th inning for a come-from-behind win in the first game of their series against the Angels in Anaheim.  Key Lines:

Thairo Estrada SS- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .272.  Probably not accident the Giants lineup shows signs of life after Estrada's return from the IL.  They really missed him.

J. D. Davis 3B- 2 for 4, HR(15), BB.  BA= .259.  Davis temporarily tied the game in the 7'th inning after the Angels scored 2 off Logan Webb to take the lead in the 6'th.

Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .262.  Bailey continues to solidify his position as Giants catcher of the future.  Once more with feeling....if that's all the Giants get out of this season, it's a successful season, IMO.

Mark Matthias 2B- 1 for 4.  BA= .232.  Matthias scooted around the IF pretty good and looked to me like he had an idea of what to do at the plate.  His 2-run single in the 9'th inning was the stake through the heart of the Angels and all but put the game away.

Logan Webb RHP- 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 10/1.  BA= 3.38.  The unearned run was a dropped ball on a tag play at home plate by Patrick Bailey which is probably not fair to BaileyWebb wasn't his sharpest but did not allow a run until the 6'th inning.  He didn't get out of the inning but after Tristan Beck RHP recorded the third out, left the game with his team having a chance to win.

The Giants remain 4 games behind the Dodgers in the NL West.  They regain sole possession of the top Wild Card playoff spot by 0.5 games over the idle Phillies and by 3 games over the Reds.

The Giants starting pitcher for tomorrow is TBD facing Lucas Giolito RHP who the Angels acquired at the trade deadline.

Churn Watch:

Luis Gonzalez OF was activated off the 60-day IL and optioned to AAA Sacramento.  Isan Diaz IF was DFA'd to make room for Gonzalez and was claimed off waivers by the Tigers.  So Diaz once again fails to find traction at the MLB level.  Wishing he finds it with the Tigers.

Down on the Farm: 8/6/2023

AAA:  Reno Aces topped the Sacramento River Cats 4-3.

Juan Sanchez LHP- 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.93.
Raymond Burgos LHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 7.88.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels crushed the Altoona Curve 13-4.

Ismael Munguia CF- 0 for 2, 3 BB, HBP.  BA= .306.
Shane Matheny 2B- 2 for 4, 2 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .257.
Jimmy Glowenke SS- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, Sac.  BA= .239.
Brandon Martorano RF- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B, BB.  BA= .209.
Sam Delaplane RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 10.13.
Tyler Myrick RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.79.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds blanked the Tri-City Dust Devils 2-0.

Carter Howell CF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(4).  BA= .247.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .298.
Ghordy Santos DH- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(9), BB. BA= .234.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.90.
Daniel Blair RHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.95.
Hunter Dula RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.77.

A:  Inland Empire 66'er's defeated the San Jose Giants 6-2.

Diego Velasquez SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .316.
Tanner O'Tremba RF- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .268.

Game Wrap 8/6/2023: A's 8 Giants 6

The lineup brought their hitting shoes but this time it was the pitching that didn't get the job done as the Giants blew a 6-3 lead and ended up losing both games of the back leg of the Bay Bridge Series.  Key Lines:

Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 3 for 5.  BA= .270.  Wade Jr had 3 of the Giants 9 hits, all singles, drove in 2 runs and scored one.

Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .256.  I've said it before and will say it again, if Patrick Bailey doesn't fall off a cliff and establishes himself as a worthy successor to Buster Posey as the Giants catcher, this season is a success, IMO.

Alex Cobb RHP- 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.30.  Well, Seth Brown pretty much destroyed the Giants in this series but shockingly the most damage in this game was inflicted by the #9 hitter, Nick Allen SS who hit his 2'nd and 3'rd HR's and is still batting under the Mendoza Line.

The Loss dropped the Giants 4 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers and dropped them into a tie with the Phillies for the top Wild Card Playoff spot, but that's still 3 games ahead of the Cubs and Reds who are tied for the final WC spot.

The Giants travel south to Anaheim for a series against the Angels with Logan Webb RHP facing Patrick Sandoval LHP.

Churn Watch:

Casey Schmitt IF was optioned to AAA Sacramento and Mark Mathias IF recently acquired along with AJ Pollock OF was recalled.  Isan Diaz IF was previously optioned out when Thairo Estrada IF was activated from the IL.

Down on the Farm: 8/5/2023

AAA:  Reno Aces defeated the Sacramento River Cats 5-1

Wade Meckler RF- 1 for 2, BB.  BA= .222.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.78.

No need to rush Harrison, IMO.  Pitching is not the problem.

AA:  Altoona Curve pounded the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-1.

Ismael Munguia LF(.310), Jimmy Glowenke SS(.232) and Brady Whalen 3B(.228) had 2 hits each.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 3.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 10.80.

Rough introduction to the EL for Hayden Birdsong.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds smothered the Tri-City Dust Devils 9-1.

Carter Howell RF- 1 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .242.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 2 for 5, HR(15).  BA= .232.
Sean Roby 1B- 1 for 2, HR(6), 2 BB.  BA= .260.
Luis Toribio 3B- 1 for 4, HR(13).  BA= .230.
Seth Lonsway LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 7/2.  ERA= 5.40.
Matt Mikulski LHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.60.
William Kempner RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.18.

A:  Inland Empire 66'ers outlasted the San Jose Giants 5-3(10 innings)

Alexander Suarez LF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .244.
Patrick Hilson DH- 3 for 4, 2B, 2 HR(8).  BA= .240.
Manuel Mercedes RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 7/3.
Tyler Vogel RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.17.

Patrick Hilson oozes tools and has games like this where he looks like a future superstar but not enough of them.  May be running out of time to hit consistently.

Complex Performances:

ACL:

Scott Bandura CF- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .400.
Bryce Eldridge RF- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .111.
Alix Hernandez RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 5.44.

DSL:

Jorge Ramirez C(17 yo)- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .200.

Game Wrap 8/5/2023: A's 2 Giants 1

The Giants continued struggles at the plate sank another strong effort from the pitching staff.  Key Lines:

Thairo Estrada 2B- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .273.   Estrada is back from the IL and filling a position and lineup slot that became a black hole in his absence.  The lineup probably would have been whitewashed without some heads up baserunning by Thairo on a bloop single by Wilmer Flores DH.  Running from 1B, the ball was in front of Thairo who read it as a hit all the way and kept running all the way to 3B to set up a Joc Pederson LF's Sac Fly.

Ross Stripling RHP- 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.21.  Stripling has a 3.38 ERA over his last 7 games, 32 IP.  This is the Ross Stripling the Giants thought they signed to a free agent contract and bodes well for the stretch run.

Sean Manaea LHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.25.  Manaea seems to have found success in a "Swiss Army Knife" role.  His last 4 appearances have been 7.2 scoreless innings divided into 4.2, 0.2, 0.2 and 1.2 IP.  Kap's been calling on him more often which likely limits his pitches in any one appearance.

Ryan Walker RHP and Scott Alexander LHP combined to give up the winning run in the 8'th.  Both have been excellent for an extended run so were probably just due.  The loss is once again on the lineup.

Paul Blackburn RHP(A's)- 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.35.  The Giants lineup is struggling but in fairness, it was a late-afternoon game with the usual glare and shadows and Blackburn had a very nasty looking changeup with both fade and dive to it that looked like it would play against any lineup. The Giants did well to run his pitch count over 100 after 6 innings to get him out of the game.

The Padres beat the Dodgers so the Giants remain 3 games behind in the NL West and here come the Padres who are 7-3 over their last 10 games and just 3 games behind in the Wild Card race.  The Giants also remain a game ahead of the Phillies for the first Wild Card playoff spot and 3 games ahead of the Reds and 3.5 games ahead of the Marlins.

Alex Cobb RHP tries for the split in the 2-game series today facing Luis Medina RHP.

Down on the Farm: 8/4/2023

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Reno Aces 4-1.

Marco Luciano 2B- 2 for 4.  BA= .278.
Heliot Ramos RF- 2 for 4, SB(8).  BA= .304.
Mason Black RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 5/1.  ERA= 4.91.
Nick Avila RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.33.
Randy Rodriguez RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 8.53.
Erik Miller LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(6).  ERA= 3.28.

For our Erik Miller fan(s), take out two road games in Albuquerque and Salt Lake City, his pitching line since July 1 is 9.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 13 K's, 4 Saves.

AA:  Altoona Curve blanked the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-0.

John Bertrand LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.00.
Blake Rivera RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.58.

Squirrels have been shut out 3 times in 4 games this series and won one game themselves by shutout.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds outlasted the Tri-City Dust Devils 4-3(10 innings).

Carter Howell CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .241.
Zach Morgan C- 2 for 4. BA= .429.
Nick Sinacola- 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K's, GO/AO= 6/1.  ERA= 4.67.

Sinacola has not allowed an Earned Run in 3 of his last 4 starts.

A:  Inland Empire 66'ers topped the San Jose Giants 7-6.

Diego Velasquez SS- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .317.
Patrick Hilson RF- 1 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .230.

Complex Performances:

ACL:

Samir Chires RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.82.
Cole Foster SS- 4 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .385.
Guillermo Williamson 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(9).  BA= .301.
Christian Avendano RHP- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 6.41.

Cole Foster clearly needs to be assigned to a full season team but at which level?  it would be nice for Guillermo Williamson to face some A level pitching as the season winds down to prep him for next season.
