We'll do a bit of catching up here:
The Giants have signed 4'th round draft pick Bryce Bandilla, LHP and immediately assigned him to the 7 day DL. They apparently have also signed 5'th rounder Chris Marlowe, RHP and 7'th rounder Ray Black, RHP. That leaves just 3 of their top draft picks unsigned: 2'nd rounder Andrew Susac, C, 3'rd rounder Ricky Oropesa, 1B and 6'th rounder Josh Osich, LHP. I have avoided asking Mom directly about Ricky signing, but I get the strong feeling that he will.

Down on the Farm: Hector Sanchez Called Up.
Today, the Giants announced that they had purchased the contract of catcher Hector Sanchez from the Fresno Grizzlies. To make room on the 35 man Active Roster, they placed Pat Burrell on the 15 day DL with a bone spur in his heel. To make room on the 40 man Major League Roster, they moved Mark DeRosa from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL. Making the situation even murkier, DeRosa is slated to begin a rehab assignment in San Jose!
Hector Sanchez had obviously been a candidate for promotion to the majors since he jumped all the way from High A San Jose to the AAA Fresno Grizzlies. The timing is a big surprise, though. Eli Whiteside has been playing much better of late and getting steadily better as he gets more regular AB's under his belt. He is hitting .333 over his last 10 games and has an overall OPS of .735. While Sanchez may be a better hitter and catcher long term, it's hard to imagine him being an immediate upgrade at the position. Backup catcher Chris Stewart has been struggling a bit more of late, but has become Timmy's personal catcher. I don't think the Giants want to disrupt Timmy's finely tuned game one more time.
The move does provide better in-game flexibility since you don't want to use your backup catcher as a substitute in case an injury leaves you without anyone to play the position. Sanchez also gives you a switch-hitting bat off the bench. Ideally, though, you want a young player to be playing and it's hard to see Sanchez replacing Whiteside as the starter in the short term.
If the move was precipitated by the need to put Burrell on the DL, why not bring up one of the hitters already on the 40 man roster? The Giants think Brandon Belt needs more AB's in the minors coming off his fractured hand, but Thomas Neal and Francisco Peguero have been hitting at least as well as Sanchez.
The move has the feel of a prelude to more moves to come, but what moves? If a trade for Beltran is in the works, Burrell was the obvious guy to drop anyway. Now they would have to drop someone else. Another thought is they want to audition Sanchez before the trade deadline to answer the question of whether they need to trade for a catcher, but again, you run into the fact that Whiteside has been pretty good of late. Trading for a catcher is more of a long term decision about Whiteside's future than Sanchez'.
Interesting to see how it all plays out.

Down on the Farm: DrB's 2011 Giants Top 50 Prospects- #26 Jose Valdez
#26 Jose Valdez, RHP. BD: 8/1/1988. 6"7", 250 lbs. B-R, T-R.
Low A: 4-3, 3.30, 60 IP, 37 BB, 68 K's, GO/AO= 1.61.
Jose Valdez has been in the organization since 2006 when he was listed as 6'7" and something like 170 lbs and was a wild 17 year old in the AZL. He's obviously filled out his frame since then. He also missed the entire 2008 season with TJ surgery, so 2010 was his first full season since going under the knife.
I haven't read any recent scouting reports. BA listed him as a top 20 prospect in the AZL and reported a mid 90's fastball with sink and run with very raw secondary stuff. Last year, he just kept getting stronger and stronger as the season went along finishing with a 1.62 ERA over his last 10 appearances. I expect him to be working out of SJ's bullpen in 2011. He is always a threat to have a breakout season and rocket up the system a la Dan Runzler in 2009.
If you are interested, go to google.com, click on images and search for Jose Valdez Giants. You'll find a couple of pics. What an awesome physical presence!

Down on the Farm: 07-09-2010
AAA Fresno Grizzlies edged the Tacoma Rainiers 8-7:
Eugenio Velez- 2 for 5, 2 SB(24). BA= .306.
Matt Downs- 2 for 5. BA= .292.
Tyler Graham- 2 for 4, HR(1). BA= .358.
Henry Sosa- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.07.
If Andres Torres has to go on the DL, I think I'd rather see Velez called up to play CF than just putting Rowand out there. Better yet, DFA Velez and give Tyler Graham a chance!
AA RIchmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Altoona Curve 4-1:
Darren Ford- 2 for 5, SB(27). BA= .232.
Nick Noonan- 2 for 5. BA= .255.
Felix Romero- 7 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.63.
High A Stockton Ports topped the San Jose Giants 5-2:
Francisco Peguero- 0 for 3, 2 BB, SB(29). BA= .289.
Michael Ambort- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB. BA= .185.
Johnny Monell- 2 for 3, 2 2B, BB. BA= .241.
Good to see Peguero take a couple of walks. Monell is hitting .424/ .525/.848 with 3 HR's over his last 10 games.
Low A Kannapolis Intimidators out hit the Augusta Greenjackets 11-10:
Evan Crawford- 2 for 5. BA= .255.
Nick Liles- 3 for 5, 3B. BA= .329.
Tommy Joseph- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(11). BA= .230.
Hector Sanchez- 3 for 5, HR(4). BA= .283.
Tommy Joseph is hitting .270/.341/.649 with 4 HR's over his last 10 games. Hector Sanchez, who has been one of my favorite players in the system for a couple of years is heating up, hitting .375/.419/.525 over his last 10 games.
Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes slipped past the Tri-City Dust Devils 3-2:
Jose Medina- 2 for 5, 2B, SB(1). BA= .303.
Adam Duvall- 1 for 3, HR(2), HBP. BA= .295.
Taylor Rogers- 6 IP, 9 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 6 K's, GO/AO= 10/1.
Stephen Harrold- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Mario Rodriguez- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.50.
Rookie AZL Giants outscored the Cubs 9-8:
Carlos Willoughby- 4 for 5, 2B, 3B. BA= .333.
Jose Cuevas- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .222.
Charlie Jones- 1 for 5, 2B, OF Assist. BA= .294.
Brice Cutspec- 1 for 5, HR(1). BA= .226.
John Eshleman- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .229.
Stephen Shackleford- 2.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.53.
Jacob Shadle- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.
Gotta be excited about Willoughby. I'd like to see him promoted aggressively. Charlie Jones is playing CF to add to the awesomeness of that draft pick.
DSL Giants held off the Cubs 5-4 in a game completed early after 7 innings:
Christian Paulino- 3 for 3. BA= .287.
Leonardo Fuentes- 1 for 3. OF Assist. BA= .248.
Marvin Barrios- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 0.50.
Barrios line so far: 2-0, 0.50, 18 IP, 1 BB, 16 K's.
Eugenio Velez- 2 for 5, 2 SB(24). BA= .306.
Matt Downs- 2 for 5. BA= .292.

Down on the Farm: 07-08-2010
AAA Tacoma Rainiers edged the Fresno Grizzlies 5-4:
Joe Borchard- 2 for 4, HR(10). BA= .290.
Kevin Pucetas- 6 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 5.74.
At this time, it looks unlikely that either Borchard or Pucetas will get a shot with the Giants.
AA Harrisburg Senators out hit the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-7:
Nick Noonan- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .251.
Brandon Belt- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .455.
Thomas Neal- 2 for 2, BB. BA= .284.
Conor Gillaspie- 2 for 4, 3B. BA- .266.
Michael Main- 4.1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 3 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 9.00.
At least we are seeing the right names on the offensive highlights. Usually the transition from the Cal League to the Eastern League is a lot smoother for pitchers than it has been for Michael Main.
High A San Jose Giants stomped on the Stockton Ports 11-5:
Juan Perez- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .304.
Wendell Fairley- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .295.
Johnny Monell- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(8). BA= .236.
Michael Sandoval- 3 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .273.
Justin Fitzgerald- 5 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.40.
Ryan Verdugo- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Craig Whitaker- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Fairley is inching toward the .300 BA mark. Look for Monell to heat up the in the last 2 months here. Pablo's big bro is assigned to SJ. Verdugo and Whitaker move up from Augusta.
Low A Augusta Greenjackets edged the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-4:
Ryan Cavan- 0 for 1, 3 BB. BA= .284.
Hector Sanchez- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .274.
Zack Wheeler- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 5.20.
Andy Reichard- 6.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.64.
Hector Sanchez is hitting .333 over his last 10 games. Zack Wheeler was scheduled to pitch just 1 inning coming off the DL for a torn fingernail.
Short Season Salem-Keizer Volcanoes topped the Tri-City Dust Devils 6-4 in 14 innings:
Carter Jurica- 2 for 6. BA= .215.
Jesse Shriner- 2 for 5, BB. BA= .298.
Jake Dunning- 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.29.
Kaohi Downing- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Shawn Sanford- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.72.
Not much to comment on here.
AZL Rookie Giants downed the Reds 11-7:
Carlos Willoughby- 1 for 1, 3 BB, SB(12). BA= .288.
Wes Hobson- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB. BA= .348.
Charles Jones- 3 for 4, HR(2), BB. BA= .310.
Jake Dunnington- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.96.
Willoughby is on on base machine with speed to steal bases. I am absolutely loving the Charles Jones draft pick. I think it's especially great that he signed so quickly and is getting a start on his pro career. Dunnington looks like a great find as an undrafted FA out of HS.
DSL Orioles blanked the Giants 3-0:
Really, nothing to see here.

Blogger's Note
I will be without access to the blog for the next 24 hours. Will catch up tomorrow evening. Just a couple of notes:
Thanks to OGC for the heads up on Brandon Belt's overdue promotion to AA. It looks like Craig Westcott made the jump with him and is starting tonight for the Squirrels. Michael Ambort moves down to SJ and will take Belt's place at 1B. Ambort can hit a ton if he can stay healthy.
The Giants are off to a good start in tonight's game with a 2 run HR by Aubrey Huff in the top of the first.
