Game Wrap 8/30/2020: Giants 4 D'Backs 1

A 3-run rally in the 8'th inning broke open a nail-biting pitching duel to give the Giants a win for the 3-game series.  Key Lines:

Alex Dickerson LF- 2 for 4, HR(4).  BA= .221.  This was Dickerson's second 2-hit game in a row.  The HR staked the Giants to a 1-0 lead that would stand up until the 7'th inning.  The single in the 8'th gave the Giants their second lead which they never gave back.

Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 4.  BA= .299.  The base hit drove in 2 runs to cap the Giants scoring and give the bullpen breathing room over the last 2 innings.

Johnny Cueto RHP- 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.75.  Cueto was sharp and pitched shutout ball for 6 innings.  He left the game tied at 1-1 with the offense and bullpen picking him up.

Sam Coonrod RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1).  ERA= 3.68.  Tyler Rogers got the Save last night with Coonrod setting up.  This time the roles were reversed.  Coonrod has the classic Closer's stuff.  He has a 1.35 ERA over his last 7 appearances covering 6.2 IP.

The Win improves the Giants record to 17-19 good for 9'th place in the NL West but just 0.5 games behind the 8'th place Cardinals.

The Giants have the day off tomorrow before starting a 3 game series against the Rockies in Coors Field.

Trade deadline tomorrow.  Giants are rumored to be buyers.  IMO, they need another reliable SP if they want to make a run. Could probably use an OF too.

  1. Provocative trade idea for the Giants on MLB.com This morning. Yaz to the Twins for SS prospect (#10 overall MLB prospect) Royce Lewis and at least one other top level prospect.

    Thoughts?

    1. I think if the Giants do anything they will be buying.

    2. I also don't think the Twins would do that trade.

    3. A bottle of Northern California’s best IPA says the Giants will player “seller” before the day is over.

      We will know soon.

    4. If the Twins would, it's a no-brainer:
      Hit 60 Power 55 Run 70 Arm 55 Field 55 Overall 60
"Capable of handling shortstop with good range, hands and a strong arm, Lewis moved around the diamond quite a bit during his AFL stint, showing defensive acumen at second, third and center field."

    5. That would be a smart move, moving Yaz while his value is at its highest.

    6. I think the Twins would SERIOUSLY consider that trade.

Massive value for the teams on both sides there, and it's been almost 3 decades since the Twins have won the Pennant.

  2. I would do that trade, but I doubt the Twins will.

As for buying, Giants have enough minor league depth and payroll flexibility to buy, but they are not under pressure to do so.
It will all be about a good deal this year.

  3. Buyers, like bargain buyers? Weird season, weird market, and weird player values.

  4. First, Doc I owe you an IPA.

Second, I think the lack of moves might provide an interesting window into Farhan's view of building a winner. Might it be that he places a high priority on culture? Might it be that he viewed the deals that were possible and decided winning over the clubhouse provided a bigger boost to the organization?

Now, on a not-so-positive note, the Giants chances in the NL West in 2021 and 2022 became more challenging with the Padres adding real quality, with some years of control, to a young, exciting team. The Dodgers are still the top dog in the division, but darn the Padres are looking pretty darn good.

    1. Padres went nuts. So many moves I lost track. Will take time to sort it out.

  5. The Padres:
    1. Became the #2 team in the NL, or
    2. They sold the Future for not enough Now, or
    3. They're still the Padres

    1. Clevinger might be a difference maker. Other than that they made a whole shipload of moves that basically rearranged the deck chairs.
