Game Wrap 4/3/2013: Giants 8 D'Backs 5

Angel Pagan capped a 5 run rally in the 8'th inning with a 3 run dinger to lead the Giants to a come-from-behind win and a 3-1 series win over the D'Backs.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 3 for 5, 2B, HR(1).  BA= .421.  My goodness!  Pagan is on fire!  I almost posted a comment yesterday about Pagan being the MVP of the team.  Wish I had!  Seriously though, if you look at what he has done for this team since Brian Sabean stole him from Sandy Alderson and the Mets and what the Giants haven't done when he has missed time with injury, you could make a case that he is the indispensable player on the team.  Right now, he's doing everything!

Brandon Belt- 1 for 5, HR(3).  BA= .333.  Belt now leads the league in HR's.  Too bad he doesn't get to play all of his games in Arizona!  I think he's a good bet to hit 25 this season, though.  I know I'm glad I drafted him for my fantasy team.

Hector Sanchez- 1 for 3, 2B, SF.  BA= .500.  Can somebody please find The Hector a place to play everyday?  This dude is READY to be a starting C in MLB!

Brandon Hicks- 1 for 1, HR(1).  BA= 1.000.  Looks like Hicks' cup of coffee just got a bit deeper.  At this point, I'm not sure I wouldn't let Arias be the odd man out when and if Scooter comes back.

Michael Morse- 1 for 1.  BA= .300.  D'Backs intentionally walked Buster Posey to pitch to Morse.  He made them pay!

Brandon Crawford- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(1).  BA= .308.  Crawford has looked good so far.

Tim Lincecum- 6 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 6.00.  Two 2-run dingers spoiled an otherwise pretty good pitching performance, and he came within 1 out of a QS.  Timmy's peripherals have been better than his results for 2 years now, though.

Santiago Casilla- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Looks like everybody in the bullpen not named Romo and Lopez are going to be expected to pitch more than 1 inning at times.  I say, it's about time!  Great effort by Casilla here keeping Romo on the bench to save him for the LA series.

With the Win, the Giants record improves to 3-1, 0.5 games behind the idle 4-1 Dodgers.  The Padres were idle at 1-2, 2 games off the pace.  The Rockies are 1-3 after losing to Miami again, 2.5 games behind the Dodgers while the D'Backs bring up the rear in the NL West with a 1-5 record, already 3.5 games behind.

The Giants now move on to LA where they play the Dodgers tomorrow afternoon in their home opener, with Ryan Vogelsong facing Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Around the League:  Perhaps the most significant development in the first series' of the season is the absolute destruction of the Angels by the Seattle Mariners.  Either the Mariners are way better than most analysts gave them credit for, or the Angels are way worse.  Maybe a little of both?

  1. Don't know if the Giants can make the late inning comebacks against the Bums pen. Starters are going to have to keep them in games.

Ryu likes to pitch his off speed junk backwards, let's hope the Giants can turn a few around.

Had enough of AZ, unlike last year the Giants get out of the snake pit with some wins under their belt.

Timmy did better than I expected, but he has to keep his pitches down the the big guys. Makes me sick seeing Goldie hit another dinger off Timmy. Stop picking on Timmy.

Got to say Hector is a fearless stud hitter. DocB is right he will be playing everyday somewhere.

    1. Timmy needs to just not throw anything near the strike zone to Goldschmidt. As Kruk says, "ownage is ownage." Might as well admit it and not let him be the one to beat you.

  2. doc,

i think when susac is ready, the giants will deal hector

he is too good to be a backup and a starting catcher has a lot of worth on open market

watch for a move in 2015

7 game road trip to start the season against div rivals....very tuff

the mariners did a lot of things right this past offseason

moreno keeps doing the wrong things

except for making the deal with trout

speaking of wrong things...can someone explain what the heck goes with the friars?

a new ownership group that is spending just about the same amount as the old, broke one

    its silly

    1. Padres payroll has gone from $35 M to $90 M. They don't draw many fans down there except when they play the Giants or Dodgers and half the stadium is filled with opposing fans.

  3. I am grateful for all the runs in this series, even with Pablo and Pence not yet warmed up . And it is a big boost to have an offense that can score runs consistently.

Looking forward to better pitching. That's still the key.

Not sure why we are getting Ryu tomorrow night. Have they pitched their #4 or #5 starter yet, after their first 5 games?

  4. Timmy's xFIP is off to a fine start.

Dang it. I went night-night just before Coco gave the M's their first loss.

Doc, sounds like you didn't make it out to see Stratton take down the Dodgers A+. How far to Rancho for you? I'm 45 minutes from Visalia. And 45 from Fresno.

    1. I'm about 30 min from RC. I just have too many things going on. 2 late meetings this week and I'm working this weekend. I'll have to try to catch them another time. Saturday night is a possibility.

    2. Oh, and Timmy's xFIP has been just fine for the last 2 years.

  5. Probably can't watch any of the Giants-Dodgers series this weekend because of the stupid Dodgers TV situation.

  6. Goldschmidt's Avg and OBP were the same, the last time I checked.

I assume that means he hasn't drawn a walk either.
