Right now, Flores is my favorite Giants minor league pitcher. Not saying he's their best pitching prospect, but my favorite. I absolutely love what he's doing in Augusta. Those pitching lines are pure pleasure to look at.
High A Spokane Indians topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-3:
Sam Eberle(DH)- 1 for 3, HR(5). BA= .308.
Chris Johnson(RHP)- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 11 K's. ERA= 2.65.
I'd say 11 K's against 0 BB's in 5 IP, is fairly dominant.
Rookie AZL Giants pounded the Indians 8-2:
Christian Arroyo(SS)- 1 for 4, 3B, BB. BA= .265.
Ryder Jones(3B)- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .438.
Hector Mercedes(RF)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= 333.
Johneshwy Fargas(CF)- 1 for 2, BB, SB(1). BA= .353.
Keury Mella(RHP)- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.00.
Great to see so many of the HS draftees doing so well out of the gate. Also have to be excited about Keury Mella who seems to be a Kendry Flores clone. So far, in a small sample size, he's cut down his walk rate and increased his GB rate while maintaining his K rate from the DSL last year.

Game Wrap 7/10/2013: Mets 7 Giants 2
You can brush off one shelling as a fluke, but Matt Cain came back from getting pounded in his last start to not getting out of the first inning in this one. OK, I think we can all officially hit the panic button! Key Lines:
Brandon Belt- 1 for 2, 3B, 2 BB. BA= .259. Second strong game in row for Belt who seems to have put the 0 for 8 with 5 K's completely behind him. He would not have last year!
Brandon Crawford- 2 for 4. BA= .270. 3'rd multi-hit game in a row for this Brandon.
Matt Cain- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 1 K. ERA= 5.06. Apparently Cainer was lifted because his pitch count had reached 36 in 1 inning. I was working during the game so did not see it or see the velocities on Gameday. Were they down at all? Cain has been the absolute bedrock of this team for so long.....well....this is very disconcerting! I'll just hope it's a mechanical thing or a pitch-tipping thing that can be worked out as opposed to an injury he's hiding.
Mike Kickham- 5.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 10.61. Not great numbers but the K/9 continues to indicate he has MLB quality stuff. Just needs to refine his game. Hanging around for 5+ innings is a good way to facilitate the refining process.
All division rivals are playing later tonight, and does it really matter? Until the Giants find a floor, which they clearly haven't, it does not matter what other teams do.
As if the loss and Cainer's performance were not a bummer enough, Chad Gaudin was charged with lewd conduct stemming from an incident that occured in January in Las Vegas. I won't go into details, but after reading about the incident, man, that is weird beyond belief. So much for what happens in Vegas...... I assume the Giants were aware of the incident when they signed him. If so, they should stick by him and let him have his day in court, or plea bargain or whatever, but man, that has to be embarrassing to the entire organization and team!

Game Wrap 7/9/2013: Mets 10 Giants 6
It has become somewhat interesting to watch Giants games because of the variety of interesting ways they find to lose games. In this one and exhausted bullpen gave it up in a 5 run 8'th inning that negated a pretty good game from the offense and sealed their fate once again. Key Lines:
Gregor Blanco- 2 for 5. BA= .277. Blanco's BA reached a nadir on 7/5 at .270. Since then he's gone 5 for 16 with a BB.
Kensuke Tanaka- 1 for 4, BB. BA= .250. The Giants must have seen something in Gillespie they didn't like because he was never really given a chance. Tanaka gets the callup and brought some energy to the dugout. First MLB hit. Nice catch in LF. Big smile on his face! He got a huge ovation from the crowd after his hit. If he can stick, he's going to be very popular in SF! Love putting the rabbits 1-2 in the lineup!
Marco Scutaro- 2 for 4, Sac. BA= .316. Scooter looks like he feels much better and that means he's back to cranking out the hits. I really like this lineup with him hitting 3'rd behind the rabbits. This is a team that has to keep the line moving and nobody keeps it moving better than Scoots.
Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SF. BA= .258. Pablo now has hits in 4 of his last 5 games and walks in his last 2. He is finally looking a little more comfortable at the plate. Doesn't look any thinner, though.
Hunter Pence- 2 for 5. BA= .267. Pence ended an 0 for 20-something skid in the 16 inning game with a triple and got 2 more hits in this one. Maybe he's coming out of it too?
Brandon Belt- 1 for 2, 2 BB, SB(4). BA= .257. OK, here's a couple of other names who went 0 for 8 with 5 K's: Jim Thome and Chris Davis. Cecil Cooper went 0 for 8 with 6 K's! That's not terrible company. Credit to Belt for not bringing it with him to this game. He also made a heckuva relay throw from way down the RF line, but the runner had held up at 3B. Oh, and we're still waiting for Bacci to tell us what Belt's "tell" is!

Not tonight, as he let the Mets geat the lead back in a 3 run 4'th and then let them extend it with a 2 run 6'th.
Jose Mijares- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.68. Mijares took the loss, but he pitched very well, especially after Quiroz came out to the mound and barked at him for nibbling. Bochy took him out after a 1 out walk and 30 pitches in favor of Affeldt and his gas can.
Jeremy Affeldt- 0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 0 K's. ERA= 3.77. Affeldt has always had his detractors, especially for his salary which is generous for a non-closer reliever, but he has been an essential piece in 2 championships. Having said that, the man is not having a good season! Maybe he'll turn it around in the second half. Maybe it will be too late by then.
The D'Backs lost again to the charging Dodgers, 6-1, so the Giants remain 6.5 games behind the NL West leaders. The Giants are now tied for 4'th and last place with the Padres who topped the Rockies 2-1. The Rockies sit 4.5 games behind the leaders in 3'rd place while the second place Dodgers are 2.5 games out of the lead.

Game Wrap 7/8/2013: Mets 4 Giants 3
The Giants put up a heckuva fight for this one that lasted 16 innings. Alas, it finally ended on a error by Brandon Crawford that resulted in an unearned run charged to George Kontos. Another microcosm of the season so far. Key Lines:
Marco Scutaro- 3 for 7, BB. BA= .313. Scutaro looked like he felt better which is a very good thing. It showed up in the boxscore too.
Buster Posey- 5 for 8, 2 2B, HR(13). BA= .313. Stupendous game for Buster, but once again, he can't win the game all by himself. The 3, 5 and 6 hitters went a combined 2 for 21 with 1 BB.
Brandon Crawford- 3 for 6, 2B, BB. BA= .264. Too bad the error ruined a fine game for Crawford. He had been in a nasty slump. Before anybody gets all over Crawford about the error, I looked up his fielding stats. He is near the middle of the pack in Errors and still has a + Fangraphs UZR. His Fangraphs fielding ranking is 12 among shortstops, so he's still above average overall. These things happen, and he is certainly not the only reason why this game was lost.
Tim Lincecum- 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 11 K's. ERA= 4.61. Strong effort by Timmy who battled the fearsome Matt Harvey to a standstill. If nothing else, this game might have made him more interesting to a team like the Angels if the Giants are thinking about a firesale.
Bullpen- 9 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 8 K's. Stupendous effort by the bullpen.
Adam Hamari- I think this might have been the home plate umps first MLB game behind the plate. At least Kruk and Kuip had never seen him before. They went on about how huge his K zone was. I thought it was bigger vertically than horizontally. I actually thought he called the strike zone amazingly accurately, according to the rulebook. Most umps cut the top of the zone off at the belt but the rules put the top of it right about the bottom of the letters. Nice job, rookie ump! The league needs new blood in the umpiring crew.
With the Loss, the Giants remained in 4'th place in the NL West, 6.5 games behind the division leading D'Backs who lost to the Dodgers 6-1. The Dodgers are in 2'nd place 2.5 games out of the lead. The third place Rockies beat the Padres 4-2 and are 4.5 games out while the Pathetic Ones are 7.5 games out in last place.

And Shankbone called it! Giants sign Jeff Francoeur! It should be quite entertaining to read the reaction to that on certain other Giants oriented websites. LOL!

DrB's 2013 Giants Top 50 Prospects: Midseason Update
Thought it might be fun to take a quick look at which of my Giants Top 50 Prospects' stock is up or down midway through the season. I'm not going to re-order them or go into much detail. Just a brief capsule of their season so far and an assessment of whether their stock is up, down or stable.
1. Gary Brown, OF, AAA. Painfully slow start. Has heated up in the past month. Down. Can gain most of it back with a strong second half, but probably won't be #1 next year.
2. Joe Panik, IF, AA. Strong start and still has strong K and BB numbers but BA has taken a hit in the last month and he still has not shown any power to speak of. Expected move to 2B does not help either. Down.
3. Kyle Crick, RHP, High A. Was out for 6 weeks with a strained oblique but came back dominant. Up, way up! Topped BA's hot sheet a week ago and should by well into next year's top 100 if he stays healthy. Most likely Giants #1 next year and by a big margin.
4. Chris Stratton, RHP, Low A. Too low a level for a first round draft pick out of a top tier D1 program. Inconsistent performance has failed to prove assignment a mistake. Down!
5. Clayton Blackburn, RHP, High A. Some inconsistency in performance, but terrific peripherals in an aggressive assignment for age. Stable.
6. Adalberto Mejia, LHP, High A. Solid performance in an aggressive assignment. Stable.
7. Martin Agosta, RHP, Low A. Low assignment. Has had some dominant starts but also has had some inconsistencies and recently came up with a dead arm then a blister. Down.
8. Gustavo Cabrera, OF, DSL. Conservative assignment for a bonus baby. Low BA in a tough place to hit, but has shown flashes. Stable.
9. Heath Hembree, RHP, AAA. Mixed results and apparent failure to develop secondary stuff. Down.
10. Mike Kickham, LHP, AAA. Mixed performance for Fresno, but mostly good. Also mixed results at MLB level after a couple of emergency callups. Stable.
11. Francisco Peguero, OF, AAA. Has hit well for Fresno. Did not play much in a MLB callup. Currently out with a concussion. Stable.
12. Ricky Oropesa, 1B, AA. Got bitten by the EL bug. Back in SJ trying to get his feet back under him. Down.

17. Edwin Escobar, LHP, High A. Strong performance for SJ. Up!
18. Chuckie Jones, OF, Low A. Shows flashes, but still trying to get some traction. Down.
19. Shilo McCall, OF, Short Season. Very small sample size so far at S-K, but holding his own against mostly older competition. Stable.
20. Tyler Hollick, OF, Short Season. Poor numbers in a very brief Low A stint. Red hot for S-K. Stable.
21. Chris Heston, RHP, AAA. Hesto Presto has gotten knocked around with Fresno. We could be seeing his ceiling with limited stuff. Down.
22. Cody Hall, RHP, AA. Lights out for SJ and now Richmond. Up!

32. Eduardo Encinosa, RHP, Short Season. Has kind of disappeared. Down.
33. Roger Kieschnick, OF, AAA. Started strong, but has tailed off over past month. Stable.
34. Chris Dominguez, OF/3B, AAA. Has completely changed his approach hitting for average but little power. Stable.
35. Nick Noonan, IF, AAA. Won a bench job out of camp and started strong. Inexperience and lack of PT took their toll and he got sent down. Stable.
36. Juan Perez, OF, AAA. Impressed in first few games after an emergency callup, but then tailed off. Strong numbers for Fresno. Plays multiple positions. Slightly up.
37. Chris Gloor, LHP, AA. Has pitched decently in a repeat of AA. Stable to slightly down.
38. Jacob Dunnington, RHP, ???. Has completely disappeared. I assume he's hurt. Down.
39. Kendry Flores, RHP, Low A. Terrific performance for Augusta, particularly his K and BB ratios. Way up!
40. Eric Surkamp, LHP, AAA. Comeback from TJ on schedule. Up!
41. Austin Fleet, RHP, High A. Has pitched well in multiple roles. Constant movement by Giants could indicate they see him as more of an organizational guy. Stable.
42. Conor Gillaspie, 3B, MLB(White Sox). Traded out of the organization. Holding his own for the ChiSox. Up, but not for the Giants.
43. Carter Jurica, SS, AAA. Started out strong and at SS. Has kind of disappeared in the last few weeks. Stable.
44. Dan Burkhart, C, Released? I think he got released or retired or something. Down!
45. Edward Concepcion, RHP, High A. Haven't seen his name for awhile. Must be on the DL. Down.
46. Jesus Galindo, CF, Low A. Strong OBP. Steals a lot of bases. Up!
47. Chris Marlowe, RHP, High A. Pitched well early then got hurt. Currently rehabbing. Slightly up.
48. Steven Neff, LHP, Rookie AZL. Apparently rehabbing. Down.
