Game Wrap 5/9/2012: Dodgers 6 Giants 2
The Giants staked Tim Lincecum to a 2-0 lead, but it could have been a lot more as the RISP bug bit the Giants one more time. It has to be a performance anxiety issue by now. Anyway, Timmy coughed up the lead in the 4'th with one horrible pitch to Tony Gwynn Jr. with the bases loaded and it was all over but the shouting. Key Lines:
5 Giants batters reached base twice. Brandon Crawford reached 3 times. Only 2 baserunners scored all night.
Didn't see Nate's gaffe at 2B, but it must have been horrific to witness.
Tim Lincecum- 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 8 K's. ERA= 5.89. Timmy seemed to have better stuff tonight but also seemed to lose focus in the decisive 4'th inning. I don't know what he was trying to throw Gwynn on 0-2 with the bases loaded but whatever it was, it came in soft and high with a huge "hit me" sign attached. Just a horrible pitch on a count where you ordinarily wouldn't even put it in the strike zone. One more comment: Right now, Ryan Vogelsong is a better pitcher than Tim Lincecum, I don't care what Fangraphs thinks. Most of it has to do with focus and concentration. You won't find a statistic for that.
The loss dropped the Giants back under .500 at 15-16 and 5 games behind the NLWest leading Dodgers. The D'Backs lost to drop 6.5 games behind and into a tie with the winning Rockies at 6.5 games behind. The Pathetic Padres lost to the Rockies 6-2 to fall 9.5 games back in last place.
The Giants get the day off today before a 3 game series back in Arizona where they will try to avenge the sweep they suffered on opening weekend.

Game Wrap 5/8/2012: Giants 2 Dodgers 1
What a difference a day makes! After the shame and despair from last night's game, this one felt mighty darn good. Ryan Voglesong pitched a gutsy game. The defense supported him with 4 DP's. Brett Pill provided all the needed offense with a 2 run jack in the second inning, and Bruce Bochy managed the pitching brilliantly. Key Lines:
Brett Pill- 1 for 3, HR(2). BA= .270. The Giants managed just 6 hits and 4 of them were infield hits. The two that weren't were a line drive hit to left by Buster Posey followed by Pill's blast in the second. Vogelsong and the bullpen made it stand up.
Ryan Vogelsong- 7.1 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 K, GO/AO= 9/4. ERA= 2.94. 2 of the walks were IBB's. Vogelsong's ability to put the ball on the ground resulted in 2 of the 4 DP's which were decisive in this game.
Javier Lopez- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's, GO/AO= 3/0. ERA= 1.42. Lopez looked really sharp facing 3 LH batters. The first one was Ethier with the bases loaded. The Dodgers scoreboard showed a replay of Ethier hitting a grand slam last year while Lopez was warming up. Javy got a quick 0-2 on him, DP grounder! Take that scoreboard guy!! Spending money on LOOGY's pays off once again.
Santiago Casilla- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(6). ERA= 1.50. I have to confess that I wanted Bochy to bring in Romo to face Uribe. I thought Uribe might be able to catch up with a Casilla fastball, but would have fits with Romo's sliders. Happily, my fears were unfounded as Casilla threw what Vin Scully said was a 99 MPH fastball for strike on and got the final out on a weak grounder to 2B. Have to also admit my heart almost stopped every time Riot handled the ball in the last 2 innings.
With the W, the second place Giants gained a full game on the Dodgers back to a 4 game deficit. They also got back to .500 once again. The 3'rd place D'Backs lost to the Cardinals 6-1 as Carlos Beltran hit 2 HR's to stay 5.5 games behind the Dodgers. The Rockies lost to the Pesky Ones 3-1 to stay 6.5 games back while the Peskys gained a game to an 8.5 game deficit.
Big Time Timmy Jim has a chance to right his ship and gain a series win tomorrow night facing Chad "Mr Baggy Pants" Billingsley.

Game Wrap 5/7/2012: Dodgers 9 Giants 1
It's been awhile since I've felt embarrassed for the Giants, but today ranks right up there with historically bad ones and I go back to before the 70's and early 80's. On top of the disheartening news about Mota, this was an ugly, ugly game. It started out as a BABIP battle between Barry Zito and Ted Lilly, a couple of soft tossing lefthanders. The Giants hit a lot of balls hard. The Dodgers hit a lot of dribblers and dying quails. The Dodgers ended up with a 4-1 lead and then the wheels came completely off in the bottom of the 8'th inning in a horrifying spectacle of bad pitching and worse errors. Key Lines:
Melky Cabrera- 2 for 4. BA= .319. With Sandoval out, Melky looks like the Giants best position player in all phases of the game. As much as I like Melky, and I like him a lot, he should not be the best player in your every day lineup.
Buster Posey- 0 for 3, BB. BA= .312. Buster hit a couple of balls to the deep OF, but on a night like this, ain't nothin' going out of Dodger Stadium. That place can be an absolute beast some nights, maybe even tougher to hit in than Petco Park. Bochy may have to re-think using Buster at first base so much. He looked completely lost out there tonight. Either that, or we're just going to have to grit our teeth and wait out his learning curve. Vin Scully had a stat about how many ground balls Posey hits. After watching him get his bell rung on the foul tip Sunday, I"m not convinced he's really a catcher even without the ankle injury and I'm not sure he's ever going to hit for enough power to be a first baseman, especially one with a marginal glove. This may be heresy, but the Giants might want to look into selling high on Buster.
Joaquin Arias- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .344. Arias hit the ball hard 4 times and looked good on D too. He may be earning a starting gig here.
Barry Zito- 6 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.21. Another QS for Zito. He gave up a bunch of very weak hits, but the walks hurt.
Hector Sanchez- 0 for 4. BA= .250. Sanchez had some weak swings against the soft junk Lilly was serving up, but was robbed of a 2 RBI double against Belisario. He looked terrific behind the plate. New nickname: The Zito Whisperer!
Ryan Theriot- 0 for 4, BB. BA= .192. Theriot may not have much range, but he can't catch. OMG! Theriot is just a terrible second baseman. Hope we never have to see him try to play SS.
