Game Wrap 7/3/2011: Tigers 6 Giants 3
Ordinarily, I'd be pleased as punch with a 4-3 road trip and an extension of the division lead, but those 3 games that were lost were all very winnable. Today was another one. Ryan Vogelsong did a good job of battling his command demons and pitched another QS, but the rest of the team seemed a bit flat after last night's rain delayed blowout. The bullpen poured gasoline on the fire and Miguel Tejada made a crippling error on a throw that should have ended the 7'th inning with the lead intact. Key Lines:
Ross and Nate had 2 hits each. Ross made an error in LF that cost another unearned run. The offense had a couple of opportunities to break the game open but line drives went directly into fielders' gloves.
Ryan Vogelsong- 6.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.13. It's a testament to how far Vogey has come that this seems like a disappointing start for him. Still, he battled very gamely against the errors in the field and his own shaky command. If this is an off day for him, he'll be OK going forward. Nice that Bochy put him on the All-Star squad. IMO, Madbum deserves to go too. That one bad inning against the Twins is probably what kept him out.
The Giants will likely maintain their 3 game lead in the NL West as the D'Backs are trailing the A's 7-1 late. The Rockies have already lost a slugfest to KC 16-8 and the Padres have also lost. The Dodgers play later against the Angels.
The Giants come home for the last 7 games leading up to the All-Star Break. Tim Lincecum starts off a 4 gamer against the Pesky Padres against Clayton Richard in a 2 PM game tomorrow.

Game Wrap 7/2/2011: Giants 15 Tigers 3
The Baseball Gods must have been pleased with Barry Zito for taking the ball on 3 days rest and even more pleased when he took it again after a 2 and 1/2 hour rain delay. First they guided the Giants hitters to a 15 run offensive explosion of Mt St. Helens proportions and then the the BABIP Gods guided the rockets coming off the Tigers' bats right into the gloves of waiting Giants fielders. Credit to the fielders for making several good plays. Key Lines:
Emmanuel Burriss- 2 for 6. BA= .241. Burriss got the first inning rally going with a sharp groundball single through the right side.
Pablo Sandoval- 1 for 5, HR(7), BB. BA= .294. Pablo drove in the first runs with a drive to left-center which cleared the original LF wall by a wide margin.
Aubrey Huff- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .244. Huff needs to do more of what he did tonight. Stay within himself and not try to win it all by himself.
Nate Schierholtz- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .274. Nate is a guy who seems to have learned to stay within himself. He's become more patient at the plate and has become a great two strike hitter.
Brandon Crawford- 3 for 4, HR(2), BB. BA= .221. Crawford had been getting good AB's lately. It seemed like only a matter of time last night and he sure came through big time tonight. He looks mighty good up there at the plate right now.
Miguel Tejada- 2 for 5, HR(3). BA= .230. Miggy is hitting .257 with 2 dingers in his last 10 games. He started a couple of nifty DP's from his 3B position tonight too.
Eli Whiteside- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .219. Whitey is hitting .258 over his last 10 games with an OBP of .361. At this point, I don't think Sabes needs to spend a trade chip on a catcher. As I've said before, he's not getting Brian McCann or Joe Mauer anyway. Eli and CStew are as good as anything he'll get on the trade market.

He's an extreme contact pitcher who depends on getting a lot of ground balls. His GO/AO has dropped steadily since his rookie season in 2009 though, from 1.88 to 1.45 to 1.18 this year. There are still some Giants fans out there who are sore at Brian Sabean for not drafting him and paying a huge signing bonus in 2007. Not that he hasn't been a decent pitcher for the Tigers already, but his career is heading in a direction you would hope to get more out of with a huge signing bonus. Having said all that, watch the Giants offense go back into the tank against him tomorrow.

They recently signed 2 of the 3 Puerto Rican HS draftees as well as HS RHP Clayton Blackburn who faced 1 batter in this game. The Giants went mostly college in the first 10 rounds or so, but took more HS players than usual in the middle and later rounds. They have signed a surprising number of the HS kids. Their foray into the Puerto Rican market is particularly intriguing and worth tracking in the future.

If you are going to pick one guy to follow on this AZL Giants team, it should be Fuentes, who might have the highest ceiling in the organization.
Thanks to Fla-Giant over on mccoveychronicles.com for tracking the signings of Giants draft picks. They recently signed 2 of the 3 Puerto Rican HS draftees as well as HS RHP Clayton Blackburn who faced 1 batter in this game. The Giants went mostly college in the first 10 rounds or so, but took more HS players than usual in the middle and later rounds. They have signed a surprising number of the HS kids. Their foray into the Puerto Rican market is particularly intriguing and worth tracking in the future.

Game Wrap 7/1/2011: Giants 4 Tigers 3
The Giants offense woke up too late to give Madison Bumgarner a W in another terrifically pitched game. BWeezy blew one Save then tried to blow another, but Jeremy Affeldt came on and held off the Hungry Tigers at the door. Key Lines:
Aaron Rowand- 3 for 5. BA= .250. Gamer has hit .290 over his last 10 games. As bad as the Giants offense has been, that qualifies as red hot!
Pablo Sandoval- 2 for 5, 2 2B. BA= .297. Sandoval is hitting .326 over his last 10 games and has a 12 game hitting streak. He looked pretty comfortable and confident at the plate tonight.
Nate Schierholtz- 2 for 4, BB. BA= .269. Nate is hitting .385 over his last 10 games and has even drawn 5 BB's in that span. The bases loaded walk in the 9'th might have been the best AB I've seen him have in the majors.
Brandon Crawford- 0 for 2, 3 BB. BA= .198. Crawford had some good AB's and saw a lot of pitches tonight. His OBP is about 100 pts higher than his BA which is an excellent walk rate. Similar to what we saw from Brandon Belt. Bodes well for the future, don't you think?
Bill Hall- 0 for 5. BA= .217. Hall left 10 runners on base tonight. He was added as DH at the last minute when Burrell was pulled with a "sore foot." Don't know what's going on but it seems like you could DH with a "sore foot." It may be about time to conclude that the Giants failed to catch lightning in a bottle with Hall and send hlm packing as soon as Fonty is read if not sooner. Thomas Neal and Francisco Peguero are both on the 40 man roster. I'd rather see one of them DH if Burrell can't go.
Chris Stewart- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .196. Stewart started the winning rally and also threw out Austin Jackson trying to steal 3B. CStew has thrown out something like 7 of 14 runners trying to steal. The pitchers pitch noticeably better with him behind the plate. He's hitting .240 over his last 10 games and has an OBP about 80 pts higher then his BA which is quite good. Not sure there is better available on the trade market.
Madison Bumgarner- 7.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 3.65. Another sensational start for Bum. This one might be more impressive than the last one vs Cleveland. This one was on the road, against a better lineup and he did not have the late afternoon shadows helping him.
Won't talk about Wilson, but I don't think he's right.
I think there were some definite positives for the offense to take from this game. Pablo his hot. Nate is hot. Ross is steady. If they can get Huffy going, it might start to look like a major league lineup out there!
The Giants Win enabled them to extend their lead in the NL West to 3 games over the D'Backs who lost to the Oakland A's 5-4. The Rockies won big to remain 6.5 games behind. The Padres were blanked by the Seattle Mariners 6-0 to fall back into a last place tie, 10 games back, with the Dodgers who won their game against the Angels of Anaheim.
Barry Zito takes the mound tomorrow on 3 days rest facing Max Scherzer. Let's just say it's a very good thing the Giants won tonight.
