Down on the Farm: 3/30/2025

AAA:  The Albuquerque Isotopes edged out the Sacramento River Cats 2-1:

Grant McCray CF- 3 for 4.  BA= .364.
Jake Lamb 1B- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .364.
Brett Auerbach RF- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .455.
Hunter Bishop LF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(1).  BA= .182.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.86.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.

McCray needs to work on cutting down his K's.  He struck out 3 times against 2 walks in 13 PA's over the weekend.  Jake Lamb is hoping to get a call to be a lefty bat off the bench at some point.  Auerbach has intriguing positional versatility but needs to prove he can hit.  Whisenhunt got touched up for a couple of runs despite dominant K/BB.  Don't sleep on Trevor McDonald.

  1. Seymour, Harrison & Wisenhunt have started. Beck, Teng, McDonald have pitched relief. Black, Winn & Ragsdale haven't yet appeared. Who's gets next couple starts? Where's Bertrand? McDonald to piggyback regularly?

  2. Baseball maxim: Good pitching beats good hitting.
If the opposition shuts your hitters down like the River Cats were yesterday and the Giants on Saturday, you're likely to use.
But both the Giants and Cats had good pitching of their own in opening series and both are 2-1.

  3. The team lost yesterday because they were 3 for 15 with runners in scoring position with 8 LOB. Hitting coach needs to have a word about situational hitting.

    1. IMO, situational hitting is a buzzword used way too much. Yes, batters should change their approach in certain situations although there is a mountain of statistics that argue against that. But how do you know they weren't doing that and for whatever reason weren't able to execute? You have to remember there is a pitcher on the mound who is trying his best to thwart what the batter is trying to at the plate. Ever since Buster took over the entire organization has promoted better situational hitting. It's not going to produce results every game. But yes, I get it. I spend most of the FZ/Kap years yelling at the TV when runners were in scoring position, especially with two outs and two strikes that while a HR there would be great, all they need is a base hit.
