OK, it's not an original title but Logan Webb RHP did pitch a gem of a game to salvage the finale of the 4-gamer against the NL Central leaders. 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 K, GO/AO= 7/1. He won't get Cy Young consideration because there are other pitchers with just as impressive results and more starts and IP, but Webb has pitched at a Cy Young level since spending the month of June in the IL. We can break it down in multiple cherry picking ways but every one of them point to about as good as it gets for any pitcher.
So, the Giants go into the weekend series against the archrival Dodgers tied for first place in the NL West and with momentum back on their side. Let's look at the pitching matchups:
Tonight: David Price LHP vs TBD.
Saturday: Julio Urias LHP vs TBD
Sunday: Walker Buehler RHP vs TBD.
Hope I'm wrong about all this.
I'm nowhere near as concerned about the pitching as I am about the hitting. This was a good breakout game.
ReplyDeleteWell then, you must be hella concerned about the hitting!
DeleteNot sure 5 hits qualifies as a breakout with 2 of them with 2 outs in the Giants 8th that brought home the entire margin of victory.

ReplyDeleteBest lineup IMO at this point given injuries. No regard to righty/lefty matchups.
Wade Jr RF
Kris Bryant 3B
Buster Posey C
Brandon Belt 1B
Darin Ruf LF
Brandon Crawford SS
Mike Yaz CF
Thairo Estrada 2B
Pitchers spot
Would love to see Dickerson and Slater get hot, but seems they have not been able to string together consistent games this year. I'm good with giving Thairo Estrada all the ABs as I love the way he grinds it out each time he is up.
Kapler (read FZ) is committed to L/R matchups irrespective to the "hot hand."
DeleteFWIW, The Chron and ESPN have DeSlafani the TBD tonight.
ReplyDeleteGood or bad? Lifetime he's 1-11 against LA. This year 0-3, but most of his problens were in 2 games out of the 5 times he's faced them.
OTOH, Price is 0-3 against SF but he's been a victim as his numbers have been good.
Someone has to win!
It will come down to scoring some runs.
Slater plays after a fine game against LHP.
Ruf, Bryant, and Estrada are solid.
Posey has to get back on track — he's been off the rails since mid-August, 13 starts, 18 K's, slashing .137/.214/.216 without a single multi-hit game. Kapler's play 2/sit 1 has quit working — is there an undisclosed injury?
Doc,
ReplyDeleteYou are right about the pitching depth shortage. Hopefully the Giants can start to develop more pitching along with their already good hitting prospects in the future that can reach at least the high minors to help either their pitching staff or be used as trade bait. I think that's part of the reason they had no chance to trade for a difference making SP like Scherzer, The Dodgers had a stud pitching prospect in Josiah Gray and a good catching prospect Kelbert Ruiz they could afford to give up for Scherzer and Turner.
