DrB's 2020 Giants Top 50 Prospects: #21 Chris Shaw
Chris Shaw OF/1B. DOB: 10/20/1993. B-L, T-R. 6'3", 226 lbs.
AA: .288/.368/.500, 9 2B, 2 3B, 7 HR, 10.4 BB%, 18.1 K%, 182 PA.
AAA: .298/.355/.592, 18 2B, 3B, 21 HR, 6.5 BB%, 25.2 K%, 310 PA.
MLB: .056/.150/.056, 20 PA.
Chris Shaw has "light tower" power. The only question is it usable at the MLB level? The Giants sent a message to Shaw last spring when they assigned him to AA after almost 800 PA in AAA. The message was, "cut down on the K's!" To his credit he did that, at least until he got another cup of coffee in the majors at the end of the season. Shaw has 2 more minor league options so it's very likely he will start the season in Sacramento again. It's a challenge with Brandon Belt esconced at 1B and a crowded OF situation. Shaw is limited to LF, so will have to wait until Alex Dickerson has his injury and possibly other roster shakeouts to get an extended look. If he ever finds traction on one of the MLB opportunity windows, the power display could be fun to watch.

Sort of comes down to what to do with Brandon Belt!
ReplyDeleteChurchill's description of Russia fits BB as SF has jacked him around a lot for 9 years including the abject failure having him leadoff last year.
Clearly on the decline, he regressed to embarrassing in 2019 while being healthy.
Would anyone rather see Shaw flail at 26 yo or Belt at 32?
This voter would give a healthy Belt a month with Shaw in Sacramento, before cutting bait if BB replays 2019.
On a completely different topic. Farhan releases Zack Cozart ( not even allowing him to show if he has anything left a spring training opportunity. Sign a pitcher who may be a 2 pitch reliever.
ReplyDeleteWe are basically on the hook for 12Million; unlease another team picks him up.
Pardon me but very underwhelming.
Hi Bum how is the weather in Arizona?
Richard in Winnipeg
Baseball America's Giants top 10 list had an interesting twist with Marco Luciano #1 and Joey Bart #2. Doc I know you've mentioned not to pay too much attention to numerical rankings, but after reading further this speaks more to Luciano's rise as a mlb prospect then Bart dropping as a prospect. Both are outstanding MLB prospects so I'm pretty excited about both of them!
ReplyDeletePretty good report from Prospects1500 Tiers:
DeleteBart and Luciano in Tier 1: Players with high expectations of both making the majors and playing at an All-Star level for a number of years
Ramos in Tier 2: Players with an above average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor
16 Giants starting with Bishop in Tier 3: Players with an average expectation of making the majors and being a solid contributor
Shaw and McCray are among 19 Giants in Tier 4: Players who have the potential of making the majors, or have high likelihood of making the majors but providing minimal impact (e.g. middle reliever, low-ceiling UT guys)

Interesting list with Heath Quinn at #12 and Jaylin Davis at #50.
DeleteOverall, there are many players in low minors with very high ceilings. This can be a good test for the new player development emphasis.
They really should give Shaw a legitimate chance. Last season, he did exactly what was asked. Achieved in a tougher hitting league (AA). Dominated in AAA. When he came up, when they tried to insert him as a pinch hitter, several times, the other team would counter with a pitching change, and the Giants would send up another pinch hitter in Shaw's stead. I see him as turning into Duvall 2.0, somewhere else, if the Giants don't give him an actual chance. How many at bats and starts did they give to worthless batters that could have gone to him? It's frustrating. I hope he torches spring training and forces his way onto the opening day roster.
