Scouting the 2023 Draft: Review of Giants Draft Rounds 1-10

Time for a formal review of the the Giants haul from Days 1 and 2 of the draft.  Whatever you think of the individual picks, one thing seems clear:  The Giants went in with a plan and executed it perfectly. That's not automatic as it also seems likely the Padres and Dodgers had their pockets picked and had to scramble for back up plans in real time.  From that perspective you have to give the Giants an A grade.  Let's dive into the player summaries and then finish up with some general comments.  

Round 1 #16:  Bryce Eldridge RHP/1B(HS). DOB:  10/20/2004.  B-L, T-R.  6'7", 223 lbs.  We've already made quite a few comments but to recap, Eldridge is tall and lean but with an athletic frame that has room for more mass.  He is as true 2-way player who scouts legitimately debated whether he is more likely to end up a hitter or pitcher.  Hitting is generally the more difficult side for 2-wayers but the majority of scouts like Eldridge more as a hitter than pitcher.  Although tall hitters frequently have trouble controlling the strike zone, scouting reports say Eldridge has a short compact swing that is quick to the ball, yet maintains the leverage his length gives him for tremendous power projection.  As for the pitching side he has a big over-the-top delivery with tremendous finishing power.  He's been up to 97 with his fastball and should easily top 100 with maturity and coaching.  He's a statement pick by the Giants who are not hiding their intent to aggressively pursue and develop 2-way talent.  Is that a statement someone named Shohei Ohtani is reading?  The sky is the limit for this kid.  I will go so far as to say he has the highest ceiling of the entire draft, although the bust potential is admittedly pretty high too. If you haven't seen video of this kid, I encourage you to look it up.

Round 2 #16:  Walker Martin SS(HS).  DOB:  2/20/2004.  B-L, T-R.  6'2", 188 lbs. 2-sport athlete in HS playing QB in football.  Has athleticism and arm to stick at SS but enough projected bat to play at lower premium positions.  Giants interest was smoked out with some talk of him being their first round target, although Keith Law thought they were possibly targeting him in round 2.  That seemed unlikely as most rankings had him in at least in the top 40 but just like that, he fell to the Giants at #52.  Giants have a relative organizational need for power bats in general and lefty power bats in particular.  They addressed that with the first two picks but it may take awhile for both to develop.  

Round 2C #69:  Joe Whitman LHP(College).  DOB:  9/17/2001.  6'5", 200 lbs.  2023:  9-2, 2.56, 81 IP, 29 BB, 100 K.  Made one appearance in the Cape Cod League this summer and struck out 9 batters in 5 IP with 0 BB.  Unheard of prior to transfer to Kent State from Purdue for his junior season.  Put together a strong season and got late attention from draft analysts as the top college LHP in a relatively weak class.  Has a low-mid-90's FB with a sharp slider and some fade to a changeup he mostly kept in his back pocket.  Scouting reports say he has a legitimate 3-pitch mix and projects as a MLB SP.   Some comps to Carson Whisenhunt LHP except The Whiz's main secondary pitch is a changeup.  Many rankings had Whitman going in the top 40 so the Giants can claim to have landed 3 top 40 prospects with their first 3 picks.  MLB had them ranked at #23, #30 and #37.  My guess is Whitman's  upward trajectory in the Giants system will be a bit slower than Whisenhunt's.

Round 3 #85.  Cole Foster SS(College).  DOB:  10/8/2001.  B-S, T- R.  6'1", 193 lbs.  2023:  .336/.429/.570, 13 HR, 5 SB, 30 BB, 50 K, 263 PA.  MLB scouting report says he was the second ranked HS SS out of Texas in 2020 but ended up going undrafted in the shortened 5-round draft.  Has the tools to stick at SS but as more of a solid than spectacular defender.  Solid approach from both sides of the plate using all fields with gap and occasional HR power.  May end up as a utility player which is a plus in Giantsland.  

Round 4 #117.  Maui Ahuna SS(College).  DOB:  3/11/2002.  B-L, T-R.  6'1", 170 lbs.  2023:  .312/.425/.537, 8 HR, 4 SB, 37 BB, 77 K, 247 PA.  More of a plus defensive SS than Cole Foster but more of a question mark with the bat.  Hit .396 for Kansas as a sophomore before transferring to Tennessee and struggling to make contact.  He did draw a lot of walks.  Perhaps he became too selective?  MLB scouting report says his swing tends to get long and he has trouble readjusting.  Still has some room to fill out a wiry strong frame.  A bit of a project but probably has a higher ceiling than Foster.

Round 5 #153.  Quinn McDaniel 2B(College).  DOB:  9/27/2002.  B-R, T-R.  5' 11", 180 lbs.  .354/.513/.688, 16 HR, 32 SB, 60 BB, 44 K, 261 PA.  Unranked by MLB, #322 by Prospects Live.  Terrific stat line for Maine but against iffy competition.  On video he appears to have an incredibly quick swing with wrist strength that allows him to kind of flick the ball to all fields with power although it also shows him trying to jerk-pull the ball several times.  College 2B profile puts pressure on the bat but it's hard to ignore that stat line.

Round 6 #180.  Luke Schliger C(College).  DOB:  9/27/2002.  B-L, T-R.  5' 9", 180 lbs.  2023:  .336/.523/.582, 11 HR, 14 SB, 69 BB, 56 K, 328 PA.  Bowling ball shaped catcher with enough speed to steal 14 bases?  Now that's a unique profile!  Hit .273 on the Cape.  Plus hit tool with elite on-base skills.  All other tools are average to below.  Lefty hitting catchers are always have a shot.

Round 7 #210.  Scott Bandura OF(College).  DOB:  8/2/2001.  B-L, T-R.  6'4", 190 lbs.  2023:  .363/454/.665, 12 HR, 15 SB, 31 BB, 36 K.  One of the more interesting human interest stories of the draft.   The kid who was Mo'Ne Davis's catcher in the 2014 Little League World Series grew up to be an athletic looking 6' 4" and playing baseball for Princeton U.  The Ivy League cancelled their 2021 season and Bandura was injured for much of 2022 but broke out in 2023.  Yes, the Ivy League is not a strong league but Princeton played a strong non-league schedule and Bandura shined against those teams.  The frame looks like it has room to carry more mass and get stronger. 

Round 8 #240.  Josh Bostick RHP(JC).  DOB:  10/20/2001.  6'4", 205 lbs.  Muscular strong looking pitcher.  Scouting report says FB sits low 90's but has touched 97 MPH with a solid slider as a secondary pitch.  Raw and needs development but has the frame and strength to pitch a lot of innings.  

Round 9 #270.  Charlie Szykowny 3B(College).  DOB:  6/30/2000.  B-L, T-R.  6'4", 225 lbs.  2023:  .335/.426/.655, 16 HR, 21 BB, 34 K, 237 PA.  You may reasonably discount the stat line from Univ of Illinois-Chicago but Youtube video footage shows impressive athleticism while playing SS and tremendous size with a quick, short swing to the ball at the plate.  Older senior prospect but I'm calling him a sleeper in the system.

Round 10 #300.  Ryan Vanderhei RHP(College).  DOB:  6/1/2021.  6'6", 185 lbs.  2023:  4-3, 6.75, 42.2 IP, 25 BB, 43 K.  Highly ranked prep prospect whose stats did not progress much in college despite a transfer from Kansas to TCU.  Coaching project for the Giants pitching gurus.

This was the draft equivalent of a 3-true outcomes player.  They either hit it out of the park or struck out.  Gotta love the aggressiveness and shoot-for-the-moon mentality after literally decades of mostly safe draft picks.  

One more thought but not about the Giants, at least directly:  Gotta love Kim Ng blowing up her old organization's plans by grabbing Thomas White LHP at #35, one pick ahead of the Dodgers whose first pick was #36 because they were penalized due to exceeding a payroll threshold.  

Down on the Farm: 7/9/2023

AAA:  Salt Lake City Bees blanked the Sacramento River Cats 3-0.

Keaton Winn RHP- 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K, GO/AO= 4/0.  ERA= 4.37.

Sean Newcomb LHP- 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 4.0.  ERA= 4.70.

Cole Waites RHP- 1 IP,  0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.34.

AA:  Bowie Baysox beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-0(5 innings).

Parker Dunshee RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.38.

Giants AAA and AA teams managed just 6 baserunners in 2 games combined.  

A+:  Tri-City Dust Devils topped the Eugene Emeralds 6-4.

Jared Dupere LF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .269.

Adrian Sugastey C- 3 for 5, 3B.  BA= .294.

Luis Toribio 1B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .221.

Hayden Birdsong RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 4.09.

Love what Sugastey is doing at age 20 in A+ ball.  Still has 2 more seasons of development before he's Rule 5 eligible.

A:  Fresno Grizzlies edged out the San Jose Giants 1-0.

Turner Hill CF- 2 for 4, SB(13).  BA= .273.

Diego Velasquez SS- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .296.

Hayden Wynja LHP- 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 5.1.  ERA= 3.98.

Game Wrap 7/9/2023: Giants 1 Rockies 0

J. D. Davis solo HR in the 4'th inning was all the run support Logan Webb needed to complete a 9-inning shutout as the Giants ended the official first half on a positive note.  Key Lines:

J. D. Davis 3B- 1 for 4, HR(11).  ERA= .277.  Davis batted cleanup and delivered the game winning hit.  Still marveling the Mets gave him up along with 3 pitching prospects for Darin Ruf.  Even if the Giants whiff on the prospect package, Davis for Ruf straight up is still a huge win.

Logan Webb RHP- 9 IP, 7 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K's, GO/AO= 10/4.  ERA= 3.14.  Excuse the language but it was alike Webby just said F*** run support.  They can't win if they don't score.  Now that is a true ace!  Game took less that 2 hours.  Webb only threw 103 pitches.  He finished it off by striking out the side in the 9'th.  I don't think any of those hitters came close to making contact.  Only 1 of his 10 K's was non-swinging.

The Win gives the Giants a 2-game win streak and a series win to end the official first half .  They sit 2.5 games behind the Dodgers and D'Backs in the NL West(Dodgers lead by percentage points).  The Giants lead the race for the final Wild Card playoff berth by 0.5 games over the Phillies.

The Giants get a much-needed 4 day R&R which they will need to ahead of the longest road trip of the season, 11 games including a make-up game in Detroit 7/24.

2023 MLB Amateur Draft Live Blog Part 2

 Hey team!  I'm back.  Had to take care of some family time.  Giants clearly pulled off a plan here.  They get one of the highest ceiling prospects in the draft, albeit with a ton of risk, then nab the more conventional high ceiling HS prospect at the premium position with the second round pick who some thought might be their first round pick. Nicely done, FZ and company!  For those of you who has harped for years that you wish the Giant would roll the dice on some high ceiling picks?  You sure got what you wanted now.  Only time will tell if it works out but we all have to admit the safer approach has not produced much so why not shoot for the stars?

Coming up on the final Day 1 pick at #69.  Is Travis Honeyman OF still on the board?  Jace Bohrofen OF?  Jauron-Watts Brown RHP?  

8:39 PM:  Giants on the clock for pick #69. This is the compensation pick for Carlos Rodon.  OMG!  Joe Whitman LHP.  College pitcher from Kent State.  Took on late helium and some analysts were thinking he might go as high as late first round.  

8:44 PM:  Whitman is a 6'5" 200 lb LHP with room to fill out his frame.  Mid 90's FB with better command of a slider with 2-plane movement.  Changeup has potential but lags due to lack of use.

8:46 PM:  OK, let's wrap it up for the evening.  Considering where the Giants were drafting and what they set out to accomplish, I would say they hit it out of the park.  They come away from Day 1 with 3 players who some analysts gave first round rankings to.  Obviously you would rather have one of the uber-prospects at the top of the draft but you can only take who's available when your turn comes.  For sheer ceiling, I don't think they could have done any better.

2023 MLB Amateur Draft Live Blog

 Hey team!  Welcome to my live blog of the 2023 MLB Draft.  Here's how it will work. I will post timed updates on this post.  I hope you all will post comments and I will try to get them posted ASAP so we can have an ongoing discussion.  I will let you know if I take a break and give you an estimate of when I will be back.  All times are PDT. 

MLB hosts saying this is the deepest draft in history.  College hitters galore!  Pirates are on the clock:

4:08 PM:  Pirates seem to be trying to cut a deal.  Would not rule out one of the HS OF's as that would likely give them the biggest savings to spend on the rest of the draft.  Does the depth of the draft make it worth passing on Crews or Skenes who both seem to be generational prospects?

4:12 PM:  ....and it's Paul Skenes RHP to the Pirates at #1 overall.  Nationals now have Dylan Crews, who I think is the better pick, fall into their laps.

4:16 PM:  ...but Skenes is easily the top pitching draft prospect since Stephen Strasburg.

4:18 PM:  And it's Dylan Crews OF to the Nationals.  Great jumpstart to that rebuild.  Nats GM Mike Rizzo has made the right call at the top of the draft time and again.  No games.  He just takes the best player available and pays up.

4:23 PM:  A bit of a surprise.  Some talk of Wyatt Langford OF going 1-1.  No the Tigers take Max Clark OF HS at #3.  Very athletic, projectable player who should stick in CF.  Nice pick but will take some time to develop wherea Langford could be MLB ready within 2 years.

4:28 PM: Langford to the Rangers.  Great addition to an organization that really wants to win.  So far, 4 of the top 5 are off the board in the first 4 picks.  Walker Jenkins OF HS next?  

4:31 PM:  Twins on the clock thanks to lottery.  Wife always wants to know if they got someone good.  They should here.  

4:34 PM:  Twins snag Walker Jenkins so top tier of 5 all go in the top 5 picks.  Jenkins has tremendous power projection to go with a sweet swing.

4:38 PM:  A's start the second tier.  Do they take another catcher in Kyle Teel?  It's Jacob Wilson SS from Grand Canyon U.  Son of former MLB SS Jack Wilson.  Incredible contact skills.  Just 5 K's in a full college season.  Maybe too much contact?  Lack of power and lower walk rates may be a concern.  Grand Canyon is a serious college program but the play in a weak conference and I am always skeptical of stats from the desert southwest.  

4:42 PM:  The next several picks will impact the Giants selection at #16.  Draft is deep enough so it may not make much difference in terms of quality of pick.

4:44 PM:  Reds on the clock. They are a bit inscrutable.  Rumored to be in on Rhett Lowder RHP(College).  .....and it's Lowder.  More pitchability than stuff but seems to have a great FB/Change combo.  Likely a fast mover.

4:47 PM:  This is moving faster than I thought.  Giants may be up around 5:30 PM rather than 6 PM.  Sorry if I threw some folks off with that bad estimate.  

4:50 PM:  A bit of a surprise.  Blake Mitchell C to the Royals.  Seems like a tremendous prospect but a risky demographic.  Would Kyle Teel C have made more sense for a rebuilding organization?  

4:53 PM:  Rockies on the clock.  Rumored to want college pitching.  Lowder off the board.  Waldrep or Dollander?  

4:55 PM:  Dollander to the Rocks.  Ran into some command issues this spring but may still have the best overall stuff in the draft.  Coors Field is a tough, tough place to pitch.

4:57 PM:  Picks so far giving the Giants more options at #16 based on rumors of who and what they are interested in.  I mean if Kyle Teel C is there at #16, does FZ go catcher again?  

5:00 PM:  We hit the 1 hour mark and wouldn't you know?  Noble Meyer RHP HS to the Marlins.  Kim Ng knows a thing or two.  Incredibly projectable young pitcher.

5:05 PM:  Angels impressed by Nolan Schanuel OF's video game stats.  Are they a strength of competition mirage?  If it's real, they have a great lefty hitter.  Giants could use one of those.

5:11 PM:  There goes Tommy Troy SS to the Angels. He was my top choice for the Giants although not by a big margin at all.  Matt Shaw SS has a similar profile and may be a better prospect.  Giants may go in completely different direction.  Kyle Teel C still on the board.  

5:14 PM:  Ugh!  There goes Matt Shaw.  Kyle Teel still on the board.  

5:16 PM:  Who's left on the board?  Jacob Gonzalez SS(College), Brock Wilken, power hitter extrordinaire, Hursten Waldrep RHP(college), Thomas White LHP(HS), Colin Houck SS(HS), Walker Martin SS(HS), Chase Davis OF(College), Bryce Eldridge 2-way(HS).

5:21 PM:  Kyle Teel C off the board to the Red Sox.  

5:22 PM:  Arjun Nimmala SS(HS) would be a great projectable pick for the Giants too.

5:24 PM:  Jacob Gonzalez SS(college) to the White Sox.  Has the run on college hitters created value in other demographics?  Giants on the clock.

5:28 PM:  Here we go.  There you go! Giants wanted the 2-way player.  Bryce Eldridge RHP/1B/DH/OF.  Overwhelming physical talent.  Most scouts like him as a hitter.  He looks more like an incredibly dominant pitcher to me.  

OK gonna take a little break here.  Giants next up at #52 overall. They have a third pick today at #69 due to compensation for Carlos Rodon signing with the Yankees.  Gotta say, the more I thought about it the more I liked Eldridge and suspected he was who the Giants wanted.  Ceiling is incredible.

Scouting the 2023 Draft: Final Thoughts

Hey team!  Today is MLB Amateur Draft Day!  It's actually 3 days, probably my favorite 3 sports days of the year.  It's a first chance to get a look at players we may be rooting for wearing a Giants uniform in Oracle Park and to dream of possibilities.  Please check out DrB's Final Draft Board posted on June 26 in the Archives to the left.  Also check out my general draft comments from Friday.  Here I thought I would post some thoughts on players who are likely to be available when the Giants draft and why I think they might draft them.  I'll break it down by demographic. 

College Hitters:  The second tier of college hitters is crazy deep this year.  Dylan Crews and Wyatt Langford will be long since drafted by the time the Giants select at #16 but there will almost certainly be college hitters available there who are just as likely to be great major leaguers as ones taken in the 6-10 range.  Here are a few to to consider:

Jacob Gonzalez SS- I have him at #6 on my board but I have seen mock drafts that have him falling to the Giants.  Could the Giants use a lefty hitting shortstop in their system?  You bet they could! That said, I think it's a longshot for him to still be on the board at #16.

Jacob Wilson SS- Son of former MLB SS Jack Wilson.  Contact hitter without a lot of power but only struck out 5 times in a full college season.  Could still grow into power as his frame can carry more mass.  Grand Canyon U has a serious baseball program but plays in a relatively weak conference.  Intriguing player but I'm not sure FZ digs the high contact/low power/low walks/low K's profile, although the Giants have drafted several in that demographic in later rounds like Wade Meckler.

Tommy Troy SS- I wonder why he didn't go to USC where he would have had an 80+ name.  Still a pretty good name and ironic he played college ball at Stanford.  One of the better all-around players in the draft who had a tremendous junior season.  FZ likes local prospects.  Odds of them drafting any one players at #16 are quite low as there are so many variables but if I was going to rank players by probability of being drafted by the Giants, he would probably be at the top of the list.

Matt Shaw SS- Very similar player to Tommy Troy who some scouts like better.  He's slightly bigger with a bit more power.  Like Troy is versatile and projects well to multiple positions.

Enrique Bradfield CF- It's been 20 years since a "slap and dash" hitter has made in impact at the MLB level.  Bradfield is going to be a test of how much the new rules might bring them back.  I have to say I would be disappointed if the Giants draft him but if FZ is convinced the new rules favor SB's I could see him drafting Bradfield.

Brock Wilken 3B- If you are looking for pure power, Wilken is your guy.  31 HR's for Wake Forest in the college season.  Size and frame remind me of Pat Burrell.  Relatively unathletic and slow of foot limits him defensively.  I could see FZ falling in love with the power.

Nolan Schanuel OF- Video game numbers for Florida Atlantic.  Where you rank him depends on real you think those numbers are.  Gotta wonder about strength of competition.  Lefty bat is a plus.

High School Hitters:  Also a deep second tier.  Comparable to the second tier of college hitters but will take longer to reach the majors with the accompanying risk. Too many to name all of them here but a couple who the Giants are rumored to be in on.

Colin Houck SS- Very similar profile to Tommy Troy and Matt Shaw but a little bigger.  May not stick at SS but power projection plays at less premium positions.  Bats righty.

Walker Martin SS- Attraction here is the projectable lefty bat and ability to stick at SS.  Giants are rumored to be in on him but possibly for the second round at #52.  Based on rankings and mock drafts I doubt he's still on the board at #52 but you never know, especially with high schoolers.  Those rumors could be misdirections too.

High School Pitchers:  HS pitchers are generally considered the highest risk demographic in the draft but the Giants have had a lot of success drafting them over the years.  I mean, do the names Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner ring any bells?  There are 3 HS pitchers, all very similar in size and stuff, who would make worthy mid-first round draft picks:

Noble Meyer RHP- Tremendous frame with tons of projection, smooth effortless delivery.  Already has enough secondary stuff to make him a fast mover despite his youth.

Thomas White LHP- Very similar profile to Meyer but lefty arm an added attraction.  I still rank Meyer higher as his frame looks a bit sturdier and White has more effort in his delivery to my eye.

Charlee Soto RHP- Again, very similar profile to Meyer.  Frame is a bit more filled out.  Meyer uses a changeup for his main secondary pitch while Soto uses a split.  On one video it looked like hitters were picking up the split and laying off while it dropped out of the strike zone for a ball.

College Pitchers:  Paul Skenes is so far ahead of any other college pitcher I am not sure there is a second tier.  What's left after Skenes is more like third tier.  On thing to remember here is the Giants head national cross-checker is Brian Bridges who loves to draft pitching.

Rhett Lowder RHP- Lowder is more of a classic pitchability college pitcher whose best pitch is a changeup.  He did get his FB up as high as 97 MPH and matched up will with Skenes in the College World Series.  Most mock drafts have him coming off the board before the Giants pick, though.

Hursten Waldrep RHP-  More of a power pitcher than Lowder.  Inconsistent during the regular college season but stepped up his game in the College World Series.

Chase Dollander RHP- Some preseason rankings had Dollander at #1 overall and no lower than #3.  His command stumbled significantly his junior season so stock is lower.  How much lower?  Still might have the best overall stuff in the draft.

Two-Way Player(HS):  Here is a wild card for you.  

Bryce Eldridge RHP/1B/DH/OF.  Tremendous size at 6' 7".  The one true 2-way player in the draft.  Most scouts see him as a hitter with tremendous lefthanded power projection.  He looks more like a RHP to my eye with incredible size, downward plane and room to fill out his frame which is quite sturdy for a kid that tall.  Giants reached for a 2-way player last draft.  Would they do it again?

Having put this all together, the Giants will probably draft someone I haven't even considered but that's the MLB draft for you.  Check back around 4:00 PM PDT.  I am going to try to set up a live blog for the draft.  Giants probably won't be on the board until around 2 hours in, around 6:00 PM PDT.

Down on the Farm: 7/8/2023

AAA:  Salt Lake City Bees swarmed over the Sacramento River Cats 14-6. 

Bryce Johnson CF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .316.

David Villar 3B- 1 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .287.

Joey Bart C- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .247.

Heliot Ramos RF- 2 for 5, HR(6).  BA= .341. 

Randy Rodriguez RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 8.64.

Johnson, Villar, Bart and Ramos stay hot and wait for their next chance.

AA:  Bowie Baysox beat the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-1.

Victor Bericoto RF- 1 for 3, HR(1), BB.  BA= .222.

Raymond Burgos LHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.38.
