Game Wrap 5/14/2016: Giants 5 D'Backs 3
Buster Posey broke a 3-3 tie with a ground-rule double in the 9'th inning to take their 3'rd in a row from the D'Backs and a much needed Win in a game started by Jake Peavy or Matt Cain. Key Lines:
Denard Span- 4 for 4, 3B, HBP. BA= .280. Span is 9 for 17 in his last 4 games and batting .370 over his last 7, .317 over his last 15 and .296 over his last 30. That all comes with an OBP of .377 overall and .413 over his last 30 games. Very nice return on the investment so far for the Giants!
Buster Posey- 2 for 5, 2B. BA= .273. Buster was 4 for his last 36 when he came to the plate with the bases loaded in the 9'th facing Daniel Hudson who had not allowed a hit to any of the 27 RH batters he had faced this season.
Hunter Pence- 1 for 4, HR(6), BB. BA= .288. Pence takes sole possession of the team lead in HR's.
Jake Peavy- 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's, GO/AO= 9/2. ERA= 7.43. Peavy had looked a bit better in his most recent start. Today, he overcame a GI virus to throw go 6 innings and pitch a QS. Maybe this is the start of one of his good runs?
Cory Gearrin- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(1). ERA= 3.06. Interesting that on a night when Casilla was not available due to workload, Gearrin was the guy who got the ball in the 9'th inning. He responded with a terrific inning and Bochy even letting him face the fearsome LH batter, Jake Lamb, who was the tying run. Gearrin struck him out!
*********************************************************************************
The Win was the Giants 4'th in a row and 3'rd of this 4 games series. The Giants remained percentage points behind the NL West leading Dodgers as the Bad Guys beat the Cardinals 5-3 in El Lay. The Rockies beat the Mets again to remain in 3'rd place, 1.5 games behind the Dodgers. The Padres outscored the BrewCrew 8-7 to move into 4'th place, 3.5 games back while the D'Backs fell into last place, 4 games off the pace.

Matt Cain tries to build on his excellent last start and tries to close out a 4 game payback sweep of the D'Backs facing Rubby De La Rosa this afternoon.

Game Wrap 5/13/2016: Giants 3 D'Backs 1
Jeff Samardzija outdueled Shelby Miller in the desert thanks to a 3-run dinger by Joe Panik in the 6'th inning. Key Lines:
Denard Span- 2 for 4. BA= .259. Span seems to be hitting his stride going 5 for 13 plus 2 BB's in his last 3 games.
Joe Panik- 2 for 3, HR(5), BB. BA= .256. Panik homers for the second game in a row and is now tied for the team HR lead with Hunter Pence.
Angel Pagan- 1 for 2, BB. BA= .319. Welcome back, Angel Pagan! Pagan was back in the 9-hole and started the winning rally with a single.
Jeff Samardzija- 8 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, GO/AO= 10/3. ERA= 2.88. Another strong pitching performance by the Shark and this guy might be the bargain of the offseason in all of MLB! Shark has taken a huge load off the bullpen by averaging 7 IP since the start of the season. In his last 3 starts, he's gone 8.0, 7.2 and 8.0 IP.
Josh Osich- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 1.88. Bochy again brings in a LHP to face Jake Lamb in the 9'th inning, except Lamb was leading off the inning in this game.
Santiago Casilla- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's, Save(8). ERA= 1.84. Casilla comes in to get the last 2 outs of the inning and earn the Save. He apologized to Bochy for his outburst the night before and now there is nothing but smiles and laughter coming from the sandbox again.
*********************************************************************************
The Win keeps the Giants tied with the Dodgers, who outscored the Cardinals 8-4, atop the NL West(The Giants trail by percentage points). The Rockies topped the Mets 5-2 to remain 1.5 games off the pace in 3'rd place. The D'Backs slipped to 3 games back in 4'th place while the Last Place Padres took a whitewash from the Brewers 1-0 to fall 3.5 games behind.

Down on the Farm: 5/12/2016
AAA Reno Aces downed the Sacramento River Cats 8-2:
Joan Gregorio RHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.40.
A bit of a mixed bag for Gregorio's AAA debut, but I read on Covechatter than he had 9 swing-through strikes.
*********************************************************************************
AA Altoona Curve edged out the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2:
Austin Slater CF- 1 for 3, BB, SB(3). BA= .284.
Andrew Suarez LHP- 7 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 3.86.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB,1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Suarez throws a QS in his AA debut. Rogers has quietly not allowed a run in 15.2 IP over 16 appearances. His GO/AO= 3.50!

Sam Coonrod RHP- 7 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, GO/AO= 10/4. ERA= 1.32.
Jebavy has 6 hits in his last 13 AB's over 3 games. Coonrod pitching to contact and making it work.

Dillon Dobson 1B- 2 for 4. BA= .284.
Dylan Davis LF- 2 for 4. BA= .300.

Logan Webb RHP- 4 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 4 K's, GO/AO= 7/0. ERA= 5.96.
The peripherals look good, but the 9 hits included 2 dingers, so we can't blame it all on BABIP luck.

Game Wrap 5/12/2016: Giants 4 D'Backs 2
Johnny Cueto outpitched Zack Greinke and the Giants bullpen hung on over the last 2 innings for a much needed W agains the D'Backs in Arizona. Key Lines:
Denard Span- 2 for 5. BA= .252. Span was brought in to upgrade both CF and the leadoff spot in the batting order. Mission accomplished! Span's OBP is .354 overall and .374 over his last 30 games.
Joe Panik- 1 for 4, HR(4). BA= .246. Panik has struggled at the plate. Hopefully this dinger will get him going.
Buster Posey- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .277. Buster has been a big part of the Giants offensive slump. Hopefully this 2-hit game with an XBH marks the start of a hot streak.
Johnny Cueto- 7 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 9 K's. ERA= 2.97. Cueto outpitched the guy the Giants missed out on signing, and for a higher price than Cueto cost them. Much thanks to Dave Stewart for his impulsive signing of Zack Greinke. Yeah, I know it early for both contracts, but right now, Cueto is looking like a steal.
Cory Gearrin- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 3.24. Josh Osich walked LH batter Jake Lamb to lead off the 8'th inning. Gearrin came in and dispatched Castillo, Tomas and Owings in short order. 1, 2, 3, inning over!
Santiago Casilla- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.93. OK, here we go. Yes, Casilla's stuff looked good. Yes, he got BABIP'd just a bit. Yes, it is defensible to not let Paul Goldschmidt beat you(I actually thought Casilla was under orders to not throw Goldy a strike). But……!!! Jake Lamb murders RH pitching, has ownage on Casilla and struggles to hit LHP's. The game was on the line and Lopez is a much better matchup against Lamb. Bruce Bochy made the right move. It was disappointing to see Casilla react like that and even more disappointing to see him not calm down after the game, especially after Lopez did his job and the Giants won. Winning the game has to be the top priority for every player. That priority is the hallmark of the Giants winning formula for 3 championships.
Javier Lopez- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(1). ERA= 4.91. Lopez struggled early in the season, but has been his usual kryptonite against LH batters of late. I can't say I was all that confident, but Lopez got the job done, blowing up Jake Lamb's bat for a roll-over grounder to 2B for the easy final out of the game with the bases loaded.
*********************************************************************************
The Win kept the Giants tied with the Dodgers, who blanked the Mets behind Clayton Kershaw 5-0, atop the NL West. The idle 3'rd place Rockies dropped to 1.5 games behind the leaders. The D'Backs dropped to 2 games off the pace. The Last Place Padres are just 2.5 games back after blanking the Brewers 3-0.
*********************************************************************************
Jeff Samardzija faces the other impulsive Dave Stewart acquisition, Shelby Miller, tonight in Game 2 of the series.
*********************************************************************************
Clayton Blackburn got the promo to give the Giants an extra arm in the bullpen. Jarrett Parker was sent down when it was determined that Angel Pagan was available to play. Blackburn's stay is likely to be just for the Arizona series as Kontos should be ready next week.

Down on the Farm: 5/11/2016
AAA Reno Aces edged out the Sacramento River Cats 4-3:
Grant Green 2B- 2 for 4, HR(5). BA= .301.
Chris Stratton RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 6.47.
Stratton allowed all 4 of his runs in the 3'rd inning. Green seems to be prepping for a super-utility role.
*********************************************************************************
AA Harrisburg Senators outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 2-1 in 12 innings:
Adalberto Mejia- 7.2 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 2.70.
Not exactly dominating peripheral stats but he got the job done and there is something to be said for getting into the 8'th inning.
*********************************************************************************
High A San Jose Giants doused the Bakersfield Blaze 7-4:
Ronnie Jebavy CF- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .211.
Jonah Arenado 3B- 2 for 4, HR(4). BA= .242.
Martin Agosta RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Jose Reyes RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 6.00.
Agosta seems to maybe be taking Andrew Suarez' place in the SJ rotation?
