Game Wrap 8/3/2018: D'Backs 6 Giants 3
Baseball is a game of surprises. You knew this was going to be a tough game for the Giants to win when you saw the starting pitchers. Chris Stratton has been mostly bad since the first month of the season and Patrick Corbin is mostly good, especially against the Giants. Unfortunately, there were no surprises in this game as Stratton was terrible for 3+ innings while the Giants offense was mostly quiet. The game was never in serious doubt after the D'Backs scored 5 times in the bottom of the first inning. Key Lines:
Buster Posey C- 2 for 2. BA= .297. The worst part of this loss might not have been the final score, but a possible concussion injury to Buster Posey who took a foul tip from Paul Goldschmidt off the facemask in the first inning and appeared stunned. Buster stayed in the game and singled in the 3'rd inning but came out for a pinch runner after being checked on by the trainer and Manager Bruce Bochy.
Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 4. BA= .333. 2 singles, 2 RBI's in Slater's first 2 AB's. He keeps the line moving!
Chris Stratton RHP- 3 IP, 10 H, 6 R, 4 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 5.52. I guess the 4 K's show he had some kind of stuff, but my goodness! Overall it was a very bad pitching performance. Unfortunately, not much different than expected given the season he's had. Probably time to him and Ty Blach to switch places and let Blach start a game or two while Stratton tries to work out the kinks in mop-up work.
Ty Blach LHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 4.28. Blach pitched 2 innings in game 1 last night, but was a gamer and came in with a bases-loaded, no-out jam of Stratton's making in the 4'th inning. He got out of it with a pop-up and GIDP and pitched another 1.1 IP. Blach has a 1.53 ERA over his last 8 appearances since July 5 covering 12 IP.

Madison Bumgarner pitched his way out of 2 bases-loaded jams in the first 2 innings to leave a 2-1 lead after 5 innings, and the Giants offense erupted for 5 runs in the 8'th inning to put the game away. Key lines:
Buster Posey C- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .293. Buster's leadoff double in the 8'th started the 5-run rally. He has a 5 game hit streak in which he is 11 for 22.
Evan Longoria 3B- 1 for 5, HR(11). BA= .249. Longoria's dinger gave the Giants a 1-0 lead in the first inning. He also made a diving catch of a line drive in the bottom of the inning to help Bummy out of his first jam. There was also a throwing error in the 5'th which allowed leadoff batter AJ Pollack to advance to 2B, but a nice stop on a smash by the next batter kept Pollack at 2B and he was eventually stranded. Since coming off he DL, Longo is 8 for 29(.276) and has hit for the cycle.
Austin Slater 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .323. Slater had the big blow in the 5-run 8'th inning when he singled up the middle with the bases loaded and Alen Hanson scored from 1B on a bobble by Pollack in CF. Slater may not give you the dingers you want from a LF or 1B, but he sure keeps the line moving. He is 4 for 9 with 4 BB's and 1 K in his last 3 games. Going back to last season, his slash line in 206 MLB PA's is .296/.383/.397.
Steven Duggar 1 for 3, BB. BA= .258. Duggar drove in the Giants final run with a single up the middle. He has been keeping his head above water offensively while delivering a slightly positive UZR in CF.

Mark Melancon RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 3.48. Melancon looked great against his first 2 batters, but gave up a hard single and a very loud line-drive out to RF Andrew McCutchen to end the inning. Bochy keeps putting him out there with 1-run leads. He got away with it in this game.
Ray Black RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 2.79. Ray Black is fun to watch! He struck out Paul Goldschmidt on a 99 MPH FB on the outside corner at the knees that was almost in the catchers mitt before Goldy started his swing. Another dominant inning for Black. Since his rough MLB debut, he has 9.1 IP, with 0 H, 13 K's and 3 BB's.

Thoughts on the Trade Deadline
Truth be told, I actually hate what the trade deadline has evolved into. It's been a case of contenders loading up while non-contenders tank for a long time now, but as teams have come to place more and more value on top prospects, the return that non-contenders get in return has dwindled to the point where there isn't even a definite long term benefit for the fans of those teams. It's more of a salary dump than anything else while teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox and yes, in prior years the Giants end up with teams that are virtually unrecognizable from the one they started the season with. If I had my way, the trade deadline would be May 31 or something like that. After that, you dance with who brung ya.
So, in a way, it is kind of satisfying that the Giants stood pat. They put together an interesting team this year that has gotten more interesting with the additions of young players from the farm system. I'd kind of like to see how it plays out with this team. Is there a chance Andrew McCutchen gets insanely hot down the stretch and carries the offense? Ditto Madison Bumgarner and the pitching staff. Can Dereck Rodriguez continue his amazing run of Quality Starts and win ROY? Will Bruce Bochy finally come to his senses and play Austin Slater every day and then see him play well enough to bolster the offense? Can Ray Black be a shut down setup man for Will Smith?
For awhile, it looked like the Giants might back down from their "selling is not in our DNA" stance and trade McCutchen. This would have had 2 potential benefits: 1. Possibly bring back a decent prospect or two. 2. Get them far enough under the CBT threshold to guarantee a reset for the offseason and open the possibility of signing a high priced FA or 2. We'll never know what kind of deals they had in the works or how far down that road they actually went. Had the Giants lost those two games on Sunday and Monday, we might have seen them pull the trigger on a Cutch trade. Instead, not only did they win both of those games, they gained a full 2 games in the standings in the process! 5.5 games out may scream sell for some teams, but not the Giants. Not a chance!
As for buying, I have said before it really is not clear how 1 or 2 additions are going to significantly increase their chances. Yes, things could fall apart down the road, but right now the only clear need for an upgrade is LF and there actually were not too many LF's available. Adam Duvall, anyone? Me? I am happy they are not trading away prospects, who I think are better than most analysts give credit for.
So I'm OK with standing pat and watching the season play out. We'll worry about next season in the offseason.

I am trying hard to not call out other blogs I might disagree with, but there was one statement made on another blog which will go un-named that I just can't let go. Here it is:
"This is the state of the Giants, same as it ever was. Their focus will always be on improving the big league team, to the detriment of the farm, if necessary. Because of that, the farm system will never be a reliable source of talent for the Giants, and we'll repeat this cycle all over again."
OK, let's stipulate that Buster Posey, Madison Bumgarner, Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and Joe Panik came up a long time ago, so they don't count. This season alone, the Giants have added Andrew Suarez, Dereck Rodriguez, Reyes Moronta, Ray Black, Austin Slater and Steven Duggar from the farm who have all made solid contributions. Heck, Dereck Rodriguez just might be the ace of the staff right now! That list does not even count guys with previous MLB experience signed as minor league FA's such as Alen Hanson and Chase d'Arnaud.
"....the farm system will never be a reliable source of talent for the Giants..." just a very uninformed, unfortunate comment from a site that continues to sell a demonstrably untrue narrative about the Giants and their organization.
