Down on the Farm: Rosters

Minor league rosters were set today. Here's the rundown:

AAA Fresno: Pitchers- Denny Bautista, Madison Bumgarner, Steve Edlefsen, Geno Espinelli, Erick Hacker, Alex HInshaw, Joe Martinez, Oriris Matos, Joe Paterson, Kevin Pucetas, Horacio Ramirez, Felix Romero, Henry Sosa. Position Players- Buster Posey, Steve Holm, Brock Bond, Brad Boyer, Juan Ciriaco, Matt Downs, Brett Pill, Ryan Rohlinger, Joe Borchard, Ben Copeland, Jesus Guzman, Eddy Martinez-Esteve, Mike McBryde.

Bumgarner, Pucetas, Ramirez, and Martinez are locks for the rotation. Maybe Henry Sosa is #5?

AA Richmond: Pitchers- Craig Clark, Rafael Cova, Mike MacDonald, Daryl Maday, David Mixon, Tony Pena, Jr., Ronnie Ray, Andy Sisco, Jake Stevens, Clayton Tanner, Daniel Turpen. Position Players- Matt Klimas(DL), Tyler LaTorre, Jackson Williams, MIchael Ambort, Brandon Crawford, Andy D'Allessio(DL), Conor Gillaspie, Nick Noonan, Sharlon Schoop, Skyler Stromsmoe, Darren Ford, Roger Kieschnick, Thomas Neal, Clay Timpner.

Looks like pretty much all of last year's SJ team moves up together. Andy Sisco is an intriguing FA pickup, 6'9", 260 lbs LHP. Good to see Michael Ambort still around and apparently healthy. Hope he can play a full season.
Sharlon Schoop seems like he's kind of stuck in no-man's land.
I don't recognize the names Mike MacDonald or Jake Stevens.

High A San Jose: Pitchers: Justin Fitzgerald, Aaron King, Scott Nestor, Kyle Nicholson, Oliver Odle, David Quinowski, Edwin Quirarte, Andrew Reichard, Ari Ronick, Jason Stoffel, Eric Stolp, Eric Surkamp, Craig Westcott, Ben Wilshire. Position players- Aaron Lowenstein, Johnny Monell, Ehire Adrianza, Brandon Belt, Drew Biery, Charlie Culberson, Ryan Lombard, Josh Mazzola, Joel Weeks, Wendell Fairley, Francisco Peguero, Juan Perez, James Simmons.

I don't recognize the name Scott Nestor.
I was completely unimpressed with Oliver Odle last year. Hard to figure why they dropped Oseguera and kept Odle.
It will be interesting to see how the PT shakes out. Maybe Mazzola is the DH with Belt at 1B, and Biery at 3B?
Who gets the call in RF, Perez or Simmons?

Augusta Greenjackets: SP- Zack Wheeler, Chris Heston, Jorge Bucardo, Bryan Salsbury, Hector Correa, Jeremy Toole(DL) RP- Jason Jarvis, Jose Casilla, Chris Gloor, Brian Irving, Devan Kline, Jose Valdez, Kyle Vazquez C- Tommy Joseph, Hector Sanchez, Eliezer Zambrano. IF- Chris Dominguez, John Eshleman, Ryan Cavan, Luke Anders. OF- Daniel Cook, Evan Crawford, Ryan Lollis. Bench- Jesse Shriner(DL), Kyle Mach(DL), Juan Martinez, Nick Liles, Jose Medina.

Wilber Bucardo and Rafael Rodriguez not listed.
Ryan Cavan moves to 2B.

Looking forward to an exciting minor league season for the Giants farmhands.

  1. Thanks for posting this Dr. B! I am really excited about following all the prospects this year. That Augusta team looks particularly interesting to me with some top notch talent and a bunch of sleeper type prospects.

This article seems makes it sound like Sosa will be a starter in Fresno.

    Fresno Bee

I pulled up Nestor's stats on BR and he looks like a 25/26 year old journeyman with good strikeout numbers but too many bb's.

Is it just me or does Jason Stoffel look a little soft around the middle here?

  2. Thanks for the links.

Yeah, hate to say it, but Jason Stoffel reminds me a little bit of Tyler Walker.

I am definitely down with Sosa starting again!

  3. If I had to pick out a most intriguing player at Augusta, I think I'd say Evan Crawford. I think this guy has a huge ceiling that he's just starting to untap.

  4. Nice blog, DrB.

I don't see what you like about Evan. I looked up his stats and he struck out too much, didn't walk to make up for that, and his stats look great because of his high BABIP. Is he a speedster? I assume enough of one since he plays CF, so that would support a higher BABIP, but not over .400, I think. Also, minor league splits stats says that he is not that good on defense. And he did that as S-K as a 20 YO. What should I be looking for that I'm missing?

I was assuming RafRod would end up in Augusta, I hope that they put him there, else he isn't as good as some of the prospect pubs think.

I think that Nick Noonan is the prospect to look for a breakout year. What do you think of him? I base my opinion on how well he hit the last two months of 2009, it was totally different from his prior months that I think that was an inflection point to the player that most prospect experts saw when he was drafted but which has been missing until then.

The key there is that he cut down his strikeouts to the level good hitters can get it down to, while keeping his walks, in fact, he had more walks than strikeouts, which only the best hitters can do.

  5. Augusta does look fun. 2 legit catcher prospects, stud 3B, Wheeler, Bucardo, Correa (what happened to him last year?) and Casilla all decent ceiling prospects...

I am glad Pill made it to Fresno. I was worried that Guzman would be blocking him.

  6. Questions for those in the know, or with more insight than myself...

    1) Matt Downs and Brock Bond...who plays everyday at second? Does one move over to Short?

    2) Tommy Joseph and Hector Sanchez...who moves, and where?

    Thanks,
    Lucky

  7. OCD Giant: I like Crawford's athleticism and I don't put a lot of stock in BABIP's. I think he has both power and speed potential. As for age, how many 3 year college players come out at age 20? He has 2 years to develop before he is as old as most college players when they are drafted.

I don't know about Noonan breaking out. He's still going to be very young for level at AA. I agree he's still a very good prospect. A lot of people scoff at his SJ numbers, but as you say, he improved as the season went along and showed significantly better plate discipline than the previous season at Augusta.

Everybody: Thanks for all the comments!!
