Thoughts on What Went Wrong: What Now?

Before delving into what the Giants need to do to fix the first half collapse, let's quickly review the causes we identified in previous posts.  I will try to assign percentage fault to the different identified causes, although you have to understand this is completely subjective and entirely my opinion:

1.  Bad BABIP Luck- 50%.  This is data based.  Quick review:  Giants BABIP of .279 is .021 below historic norms.  Opponents BABIP of .320 is .020 above historic norms.  Total swing of BABIP luck= -.041.  That is huge and probably accounts for at least half of the Giants underperformance in the first half.

2.  Relative Lack of Power- 30%.  I say relative because the Giants HR rate is approximately equal to 2014 when they won the championship.  What's changed is opponents hit about the same number as the Giants in 2014, allowing the Giants to win with defense and putting balls in play.  In 2017, opponents have hit 50% more dingers than the Giants.  This is probably due more to a league wide trend of increase HR's than to bad pitching by the Giants.  The game change dramatically over the last 2 seasons and the Giants stayed the same.

3.  Relative Lack of Homegrown Talent- 10%.  Again I say relative because the Giants have done a good job of bringing talent they drafted and developed to the majors.  The problem is during the same time, the rest of MLB has seen an almost unprecedented influx of young talent.

4.  Bad Chemistry-10%.  It is almost impossible to even define Bad Chemistry let alone quantify it.  It likely impacts performance but what comes first, bad chemistry or poor performance? It tends to be a feedback loop.  We've seen it in the last 6 games.  The players realized they don't have a chance to win this year so started playing for fun.  They won a few games and the players started running a bit harder and diving a bit farther on defense.  The improved defense inspired the pitchers to be more aggressive in attacking the strike zone, etc.

So, let's see what we need to do to fix these issues dragging the Giants down.  We will look at immediate, short and long term for each category.

1.  BABIP Luck- Fortunately or unfortunately there is nothing anyone can do immediately, short term or long term about BABIP luck. That's why it's called luck!  Teams can and do avoid bad BABIP luck be drawing more walks and hitting more HR' and accepting more K's.  As long as the Giants play in AT&T Park, which severely suppresses HR's, they will need to be a contact oriented club which is susceptible to the whims of BABIP.  Solution:  Patience.

2.  Relative Lack of Power- The Giants are never going to be a three true outcomes team, but they do need to better keep up with the league-wide spike in power.  Finding power at 3B and corner OF needs to be an immediate, short and long term priority.

The Giants may have already have power upgrades at 3B and LF in Jae-Gyun Hwang and Austin Slater.  The immediate solution is to play those guys and find out if they are the long term answers.  Short term, they also have Ryder Jones who they can test at 3B and Chris Shaw and Mac Williamson who they can test in LF, but for now they need to play Slater and Hwang until they prove they are not the long term answers.  Hunter Pence is playing better and is an immediate solution in RF.  He is nearing the end of his Giants career, though, and they will need to find a replacement for the longer term.  Mac Williamson can play RF or Slater could move over to RF and Shaw could play LF.

Even longer term, it appears the Giants have already made subtle changes in their drafting philosophy leaning a bit more toward power when they made Bryan Reynolds, Heath Quinn, Heliot Ramos and Jacob Gonzalez their 4 highest draft picks of the past two drafts.

3.  Relative Lack of Homegrown Talent-  While it may be too little to late, the Giants did draft more for ceiling and upside in this draft with Ramos, Gonzalez and Corry, all HS players with upside as their top 3 picks.  They need to do a better job of scouting, signing and developing international talent.  It looks to me like the Giants do better with 6 digit international bonus players than with 7 digit ones.  That may be due to bad luck in Gustavo Cabrera's case but in the cases of Angel Villalona, Rafael Rodriguez and Lucius Fox it appears to be more just bad scouting.  Hopefully they will get more competitive next year when they are out from under the $300 K individual cap and other teams are under a harder total cap.  They probably need to address a relative lack of organizational pitching talent as early as next year's draft.

The Giants can also look to trades to bolster the farm system.  For the first time in recent memory, they are in a position to sell off veteran talent at the MLB level for younger players.  I am not going to propose any specific trades here but will list a few of the potential trade pieces in order of priority.  Remember, since the biggest factor in the collapse is bad BABIP luck, they do not want to do a complete teardown and 5-year rebuild, even if they could:

Eduardo Nunez- Free agent at the end of the season.  They have to trade him for what they can get.  Several contending teams could use a 3B who is versatile enough to fill in at other positions.  Should get a mid-level prospect or two in return.

Johnny Cueto- The Giants expect him to opt out of his contract at the end of the season and word is Johnny is still planning to do just that.  While the Giants would probably be not unhappy if he did not opt out, they cannot afford to just let him walk while getting nothing in return.  If he does opt out, I think the Giants can make a QO and get draft pick compensation but the new rules on that are murky and I don't know what kind of pick they would get.  The opt out may scare off some potential trade partners, but Cueto is still a pitcher with postseason experience who can help a contending team win a championship.  A recent MLBTR Q/A response had him fetching a top 100 prospect plus another mid-level in a deal.  If the Giants can get that, they have to pull the trigger.

Bullpen- George Kontos, Cory Gearrin and Hunter Strickland could all help a contending team in the bullpen and could fetch a mid-low level prospect in return.  In addition the Giants need to decide if Sam Dyson is more valuable to them next year or as a quick profit on a flip trade.

Denard Span- Span is playing well right now and his value may be at its peak.  He is signed through next season at a relatively inexpensive price, so they don't have to trade him unless the return is substantial.  Cubs are rumored to be interested.

Jeff Samardzija, Matt Moore, Joe Panik, Brandon Belt-  The Giant probably want to keep all 4 of these guys if they want to re-tool and compete in 2018 which Larry Baer has stated they definitely do.   Again, they don't have to trade them but should be open if impact talent is coming back.

4.  Bad Chemistry- Winning changes everything on the Chemistry front and I don't think they need to bring in guys like Gordon Beckham just for clubhouse chemistry, but all things being equal they probably should be looking for some players who are a bit more extroverted.

One more thought:  Looking ahead at the FA classes the next two year, there a quite a few good players on the lists, but the Big Kahuna is Bryce Harper after the 2018 season.  He has expressed his love of the city of San Francisco and admiration for the Giants organization.  While Harper will undoubtedly go to the highest bidder, intangibles like location and organization may be enough to tip the scale in a close bid.  Do the Giants keep their powder dry on the FA front and go all in for Harper?  I vote yes on that!  I won't hold my breath as that would be a sea change in Giants front office philosophy.

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies defeated the Sacramento River Cats 4-2:

Chris Shaw LF- 1 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .301.
Matt Gage LHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.40.
Kraig Sitton LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.05.
Derek Law RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 7.94.

-Shaw is red hot.  .395 over his last 10 game and 5 HR's in his last 5 games.  Slater seems to have a lock on LF for the time being but that could change with a slump or injury.  Shaw seems to have put himself in a position to be next to help out if necessary.
-Not sure why Derek Law collapsed so suddenly but if he is physically OK, it might be time to get him out of the line of fire for a few days.  Maybe work on some things in camp and get his head clear?

AA  Reading Fightin' Phils outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 4-3 in 10 innings:

Low A Augusta Greenjackets swarmed over the Charleston River Dogs 11-0:

Ashford Fulmer CF- 4 for 5, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .245.
Skyler Ewing C- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .241.
Jose Vizcaino Jr 1B- 2 for 4, BB, SB(5).  BA= .243.
Michael Bernal 3B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .256.
Johneshwy Fargas DH- 2 for 5.  BA= .179.
Dominic Mazza LHP- 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 3.11.

-Seems like Mazza needs to be promoted.  He was inconsistent early in the season but has now run off a string of 7 consecutive Quality Starts with a composite line of 4-2, 1.41, 51 IP, 6 BB, 40 K.  I'm not convinced he has the stuff to succeed at higher levels but it's time to give him the opportunity at the next level.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season. Tri-City Dust Devils beat the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4-2:

Michael Sexton 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .500.
Gustavo Cabrera DH- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .231.
Bryce Johnson CF- 1 for 4, 2 SB(2).  BA= .250.

Aaron Phillips RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

-Some draftee debuts.
-My man Malique Zeigler appeared as a PH.  He probably needed a day off but I hope he does not get squeezed out of playing time by the new draftees.
-I don't know what Stetson Woods did since last summer, but he's suddenly performing like I dreamed he would way back in 2014 when he was drafted and it's been sustained success so far.

AZL Indians edged out the Giants 3-2:

Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 3 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .636.
Chris Corbett C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .500.
Sidney Duprey LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.32.
Deiyerbert Bolivar LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERa= 0.00.

-All good things come to an end, I guess.  Heliot Ramos went 0 for 5 but stole a base.
-The good games continued for Jacob Gonzalez.  He's not going to hit .636 forever either.

The Giants made 6 international FA signings today according to BA's IFA Tracker.  I don't recognized any of the names but 3 got the maximum bonus allowed to the Giants of $300 K and another got $160 K.  Here are the names, positions, country and bonus if listed:

Jean Pena SS, DR, $300 K.
Robert Gomez, OF, DR, $160 K.
Ivan Armstrong, RHP, DR, No bonus listed.
Luis Torribio, SS, DR, $300 K.
Yohan Polanco, OF, DR, $300 K.
Jesus Gomez, RHP, Venezuela, No bonus listed.

Game Wrap 7/2/2017: Giants 5 Pirates 3

The Giants got another QS from Jeff Samardzija with the help of several sparkling defensive plays.  Brandon Belt supplied the offense.  The Giants completed their second consecutive sweep and their second of the season to run their win streak to 6 games.  Key Lines:

Brandon Belt 1B- 3 for 4, HR(16).  BA= .235.  Belt made a nice recovery from an 0 for 5. His 2-run dinger was the big blow of the game and put him within 2 of his all time high.  He also beat the shift with a bunt single which he needs to do at least once per game if the situation allows.  On top of all that, Belt made a spectacular running, over-the-shoulder catch of a pop-fly into no-man's land down the RF line that had Kuip and Javy comparing him to Jerry Rice.  Great game by Brandon Belt!

Jae-Gyun Hwang 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.  Hwang is showing he can hit MLB pitching just fine.  He added a very nice sliding catch in foul territory that not every 3B would have made and he made it look easy.  I say, put Hwang out there every day and see what he's got.  Send Ryder back to AAA for some more salt.  I suppose they have to play Nunez some when he comes off the DL just to restore his trade value, but they have got to see what they have in Hwang and it might be something special.

Austin Slater LF- 0 for 4.  BA= .318.  Slater did not contribute with the bat but made a great running, diving catch on a ball hit directly in front of him.  I haven't looked up his UZR, but to my eye, he's playing the best defense in LF since Gregor Blanco which I guess isn't saying much, except I expect Slater to hit a lot more than Blanco.

Hunter Pence RF- 0 for 3, BB.  BA= .260.  Pence was making long runs and diving left and right to rob Pirates hitters of XBH's.  Looking like the old Hunter Pence out there!

Kelby Tomlinson PH- 0 for 0, SF.  BA= .254.  Tomlinson came up with the bases loaded and 1 out and delivered a 2-strike SF to medium depth in CF.  Hey!  It got the run home just as well as if it had gone to the warning track.

Jeff Samardzija RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.54.  Yet another QS for Shark who is drawing some trade speculation.  If the Giants want to compete in 2018, they should not trade him unless the return is huge.

Sam Dyson RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(2).  ERA= 8.31.  Dyson seems to have gotten completely back on track.  He was nasty today hitting up to 97 MPH on the radar gun with a sharp slider to back it up.  Dyson's contract is controlled for a few years.  Giants can use him next year or he might bring back a nice return if the flip him in a deadline trade.  Personally, I think they should keep him for next year.  He's insurance against continuing injuries to Mark Melancon and if Melancon is healthy, he makes a very strong 8'th inning guy and takes pressure off Will Smith who will be returning from TJ.

*********************************************************************************

The Giants get a day off to travel to Detroit where they start a 3 game series on July 4 with Matt Cain facing Michael Fulmer.

*********************************************************************************

More bad news out of Sacramento as Christian Arroyo got hit on the hand in his first game back from getting hit on the hand and suffered a fracture.  He is expected to miss 8 weeks which is pretty much the remainder of the minor league season.

*********************************************************************************

There was some postgame discussion that the Cubs may be interested in trading for Denard Span as an upgrade on a rough season for Albert Almora Jr.  Giants do not have to trade Span so I would hope they would get a nice return.  IDK if Almora alone is enough.  Despite his poor season, he still has a high ceiling and is cost controlled for 5 more seasons.  IDK if the Cubs would give up Eloy Jimenez or Eddy Martinez, both very high ceiling prospects who are struggling a bit in the minors.  Giants tried to sign Martinez as a IFA but the Cubs apparently topped their offer.

Down on the Farm: 7/1/2017

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Sacramento River Cats 8-1:

Chris Shaw DH- 2 for 4, HR(7).  BA= .302.
Ali Castillo 2B- 3 for 4.  BA= .264.
Tyler Beede RHP- 3.2 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 6 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.30.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K, GO/AO= 2.05.
DJ Snelton LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.53.

-Shaw stays hot.  Does he have a higher ceiling than Brandon Belt?
-What's up with Tyler Beede who seems to be really struggling?  PCL is a tough place to pitch.  He K/9 is down from 8.25 to 6.98.  BB/9 is even at 3.24 to 3.23.  Biggest difference is a HR/FB spike from 7 to 16.  BABIP is equal .309 to .302.  GB% is a tick higher.  It may be a command issue which he has struggle with in the past or it could be mainly park factors in the PCL.

*********************************************************************************

AA Game 1(completion of suspended game from 6/30)  Reading Fightin' Phils outscored the Richmond Flying Squirrels 9-6:

Slade Heathcott CF- 3 for 4, HR(12), BB. BA= .276.
Eduardo Nunez 3B- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .333.
Carlos Alvarado RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.36.

-Nunez starts his rehab assignment.
-Heathcott has been steady all season in a tough hitting environment.

High A Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 8-2:

Jonah Arenado 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .239.

-Arenado breaks out of a slump.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Charleston River Dogs pounded the Augusta Greenjackets 11-4:

Skyler Ewing C- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .227.
Jose Vizcaino Jr 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .234.
Greg Brody RHP- 2.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.35.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes edged out the Tri-City Dust Devils 2-1:

Malique Ziegler CF- 1 for 3, HBP, SB(11).  BA= .358.
Gustavo Cabrera LF- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .182.
Alex Bostic LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.91.
Logan Webb RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, ERA= 1.80.
Garrett Cave RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(1).  ERA= 0.00.

-Cabrera shows flashes but has never found traction.
-Giants taking it slow with Logan Webb post TJ.  He's still young and has time.
-Garrett Cave rolls out of bed after the draft and is immediately the Closer for S-K.  Highest initial assignment for a 2017 draftee so far.

*********************************************************************************

AZL Giants outslugged the A's 9-8:

Heliot Ramos CF- 4 for 5, 2 2B, HR(1).  BA= .700.
Aaron Bond LF- 4 for 5, 2B, 2 SB(2).  BA= .600.
Jacob Gonzalez 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .570.
Nathanael Javier DH- 2 for 5, 2B, 3B.  BA= .286.
Miguel Figueroa RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 7 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K.  ERA= 3.12.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 3 K's, Save(1).  ERA= 12.27.

-Heliot Ramos!  Gotta say, I wanted the Giants to draft pitching, but when I saw mock drafts placing Ramos with the Dodgers(his brother plays in the Dodgers organization), my heart sank.  I just said to myself, "the Giants can't let that happen!"  Much as I wanted pitching, gotta go with the Best Player Available.  My gut feeling about him landing with the Dodgers and the early returns suggest the Giants got the BPA.  Kid is only 17 yo.  Just 2 games, but he already looks way too good for the AZL!  Did he come ready to play or what?!
-Jacob Gonzalez already has 3 BB's in 2 games.  Does that tell us something about his plate discipline?
-Aaron Bond is a college draftee who should probably move up to S-K right away.
-Nice scouting report and video on Camilo Doval over at Giant Potential.  Check it out!
-Several lower round draftees made 1 inning pitching appearances.  You can look up the boxscores at milb.com if you are interested.

DSL. Mariners defeated the Giants 9-8:

Aynesber Sivira LF- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .301.
Andrew Carabello SS- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .245.
Francis Pena RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.48.

-Pena is 21 yo, but this appears to be his first pro season.

Sad news out of AAA:  Joan Gregorio will miss the remainder of the season due to a suspension for PED use.

*********************************************************************************

July 2 is International Signing Day.  Giants have a much larger bonus pool of $4.75 M thanks to the new CBA, but they are limited to in individual bonus cap of $300 K due to a prior penalty for signing Lucius Fox.  You won't see any of the big names going to the Giants today, but they could sign 12 players at $300 K and still have money left over for lesser bonuses.  Giants seems to have more success with signees in the mid-6 figure range anyway.  There is some talk of players maybe postponing signing until next year.  This may be due to large contracts previously agreed upon that are now not possible under the new rules.  Also, if for instance, a player wants to sign with the Giants(many international scouting relationships go back years), they may choose to wait until next year when the Giants are not subject to the $300 K individual bonus cap.

I personally like the new rules.  The bonuses are generous and in line with draft bonuses.  They will prevent farces like the Dodgers spending over $90 M in international bonus money in 2015 an absolutely ridiculous amount.  Although I have to say it seems a bit unfair to the players to limit their bonus potential if teams are willing to give it out.  MLBPA is the bargaining body and they have a strong incentive to keep as much money allotted to current players as possible.

Game Wrap 7/1/2017: Giants 2 Pirates 1

Giants pitchers issued 10 walks but only allowed 1 run.  The Giants scored the winning run in the 11'th inning on a Wild Pitch by Daniel Hudson to give them their 5'th consecutive Win.  Key Lines:

Denard Span CF- Span's walk in the top of the 11'th with 1 out started the winning rally.

Buster Posey C- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .340.  It was a WP on ball 4 to Buster Posey that allowed Span to score from 3B with the winning run.

Austin Slater LF- Slater made a terrific diving catch in LF and did not look slowed down by his sore hip.  His HR to dead CF just over the glove of a leaping Andrew McCutchen got the Giants even and gave them a chance to win in extra innings.  Everybody in the park, including Slater thought 'Cutch caught the ball, but when it disappeared from TV camera view, it was behind his glove, not in it.

Gotta admit, I was getting worried about Slater's penchant for going to RF and wondering if he was settling for being a slap hitter.  This HR definitely allayed those fears.  He's currently on a pace for 20 HR with 86 R and 86 RBI in 600 PA.  I think the Giants would take that from a full season of LF.

Jae-Gyun Hwang PH- 1 for 1, 2B.  BA= .250.  Hwang looks like he can hit MLB pitching.  Not sure about the D.  Ryder Jones looks like the superior defender at 3B.

Brandon Belt 1B- 0 for 5.  BA= .228.  Belt was victimized by a bizarre Instant Replay call that was definitely an unintended consequence of the rule, if it was the right call at all.  Belt reached first beating out the back end of a DP ball.  He took off on a Hit and Run play in which Brandon Crawford popped up to shallow CF.  Belt slid into the 2B while the ball was still in the air.  He got up and realized he needed to get back to first.  His foot was firmly on the bag but as he started back for first, his left foot came off on the 3B side of the bag and he did not re-touch.  He easily beat the throw to 1B but the Bucs appealed and it was ruled he did not properly touch 2B on his way back to 1B.  Yeah, I don't think that's what the replay rule was intended to do!

Matt Moore LHP- 5.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 6 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.78.  The 6 walks are ugly, but I'll give Moore a break here.  The ump's K zone was atrocious and extremely inconsistent to my eye.  There was inconsistency on both sides, but I thought Moore got squeezed way more often.  I'll give Moore credit for not getting frustrated and battling through it.

Bullpen- 5.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K's.  Again, I will point to the ump for an horrible strike zone as contributing to the 4 BB's.  Otherwise a stellar combined effort.  Sam Dyson got the Save, his first as a Giant.  He did allow a baserunner to reach 2B which caused some anxiety given his struggles in Texas.
