Down on the Farm: 9/3/2016

AAA  Fresno Grizzlies mauled the Sacramento River Cats 10-5:

Ruben Tejada SS- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .299.
Mitch Delfino DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .236.
DJ Myers RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Myers is the first 2016 draftee to reach AAA.  Most likely just an organizational assignment due to the September callups.  But hey!  Sometimes organizational assignments can become true promotions.  Just ask Matt Gage!

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels overtook the Altoona Curve 7-3:

Steven Duggar CF- 3 for 3, 2B, HR(1), 2 BB, Assist(home).  BA= .328.
Chris Shaw 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .246.
Ryder Jones PH- 1 for 1, HR(14).  BA= .247.
Sam Coonrod RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.03.

Jones dinger was a walk-off grand slam to cap a 5 run bottom of the 9'th.  Wow!  Steven Duggar is powering his way to the finish line!  This was his first HR since his promo to AA after hitting 9 for San Jose, but he's also hit .044 higher for Richmond and cut his K rate from 21.2% to 17.9%.  His walk rate dropped from a fantastic 14.1% to a still very good 8.4%.  I know you can't ignore scouting reports and Keith Law keeps insisting that he's a 4'th OF, but at some point, performance has to trump the scouting report and Law has done it all this year.  His composite line at 2 stops is .305/.388/452 with 28 2B, 8 3B, 10 HR and 14 SB.  He's also shown a strong OF arm and enough speed to hold down CF in AA.

*********************************************************************************

High A  Visalia Rawhide edged out the San Jose Giants 2-1:

Rando Moreno SS- 2 for 4.  BA= .261.
Heath Quinn RF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .375.
Robbie Garvey LF- 1 for 1, 3B, 2 BB.  BA= .270.
Mark Reyes LHP- 6 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.74.

Heath Quinn seems to be making himself right at home in San Jose.  He'll get some extra AB's in the Cal League playoffs.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Rome Braves outscored the Augusta Greenjackets 6-5(Game 1 of DH, 7 innings):

Johneshwy Fargas RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .277.
Bryan Reynolds CF- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .365.
Matt Winn C- 1 for 4, HR(13).  BA= .229.
Kelvin Beltre 3B- 2 for 2, HR(4), 2 BB.  BA= .257.
Michael Connolly RHP- 6 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.05.

I read somewhere that the Greenjackets had to win 3 of 4 from Rome this weekend to make the SAL playoffs.  If they are out, do the Giants sent Reynolds to San Jose to get extra AB's in the Cal League playoffs?  Beltre looks like a prospect if he can just stay healthy.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Rome Braves defeated the Augusta Greenjackets 6-2(Game 2 of DH, 7 innings):

Johneshwy Fargas CF- 2 for 4.  BA= .280.
Jean Angomas LF- 2 for 3, 3B.  BA= .257.
Raffi Vizcaino RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.27.

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Boise Hawks topped the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 5-4:

Gio Brusa DH- 2 for 4, 3B, SB(1).  BA= .259.
John Riley C- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(3), BB.  BA= .274.
Mac Marshall LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 6 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.73.

Marshall goes back to his effectively wild act.

Game Wrap 9/3/2016: Giants 3 Cubs 2

In a game that had the feel of a postseason matchup, Madison Bumgarner outdueled Jake Arrieta, the Giants offense scratched out 3 runs and the bullpen made it stand up.  Key Lines:

Angel Pagan- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .287.  Pagan got the Giants on the board in the first inning with a 1-out double.  Buster Posey struck out, but Pagan scored from 2B when Hunter Pence was safe on a fielding error by Cubs 3B, Tommy LaStella.

Joe Panik- 1 for 4.  BA= ..253.  Panik scored the Giants second run in the 4'th inning.  A 2-out single and a wild pitch put him at 2B.  He took 3'rd on a passed Ball 4 to Brandon Belt and scored on Nunez' single.

Brandon Crawford- 1 for 4, 2 SB(6).  BA= .273.  OK, this is the stuff legends are made of:  Crawford hits a 1 out single in the 6'th inning.  He steals 2B on strike 3 to Joe Panik.  He then steals 3B when the Cubs left it uncovered in a Belt Shift. He then scores on a Wild Pitch.  You can't make this stuff up!

Madison Bumgarner- 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 10 K's.  ERA= 2.51.  Bummy went H2H against Arrieta and came out ahead.  Time for Bummy to be turning it up a notch and it looks like he's right on time!

Sergio Romo- 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.86.  With the shadows creeping out in front of home plate, Wilson Contreras and Javier Baez, who were both taking their first AB's against him, were no match for Romo's slider.  Baez managed to squib one to Belt way off the bag.  Romo was a tad slow in getting over and he and Baez both slid into the bag, Romo feet first and Baez head first.    Our favorite ump, Phil Cuzzi, initially called Baez safe, but the replay clearly showed Romo's foot hitting the bag first.  Take THAT, Cuzzi!

Will Smith- 0.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.13.  Joe Maddon announced PH Chris Coghlan, a lefty swinger to hit for Matt Szcur.  Bochy countered with Will Smith who walked Coghlan on 4 pitches with only 1 being close to the strike zone.  Smith then struck out Jason Heyward to end the inning.  He stayed on for the 9'th to face Anthony Rizzo who walked on a pitch that Smith and Posey both thought was a strike.  Smith looked like he was about to have apoplexy on the mound and gave the ump an earful as Bochy came out to replace him.

Santiago Casilla- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K's, Save(30).  ERA= 3.16.  Casilla came in to face Dexter Fowler who laid a sac bunt down the 3B line.  With Nunez rushing in to field the bunt, it looked like nobody was covering 3B so Rizzo started for 3B.  By the time he saw Buster Posey running in to cover, it was too late and Brandon Belt's throw to 2B left him hung out to dry for the DP.  With 2 outs, Kris Bryant fittingly hit a soft blooper right to Crawford who caught it for the final out.

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers topped the Pathetic Padres 5-1 so the Giants remain 2 games behind the Hated Ones in the NL West.  They gained a game on the Cardinals and now lead the Redbirds by 2.5 games for the first Wild Card playoff spot.  They remain 3.5 games ahead of the Mets for the second WC spot and 5 games up on the Pirates.

*********************************************************************************

Johnny Cueto tries for a series split tomorrow facing John Lackey.

*********************************************************************************

As we speculated for several days, the Giants added RHP Joe Nathan to the 40 man roster and called him up to the expanded active roster.  Ray Black was placed on the 60 day DL to make room for Nathan.

Down on the Farm: 9/2/2016

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 5-1:

Miguel Olivo DH- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .250.
Grant Green LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .314.
Tony Sanchez C- 1 for 3, HR(2).  BA= .209.
Dan Slania RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 1.38.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 1.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.16.

Big Dan Slania!  What a season for him!  Started off as a reliever for Richmond.  Replaced Chase Johnson in the rotation midseason and started games for AA Richmond, AAA Sacramento and High A San Jose pitching well at each stop.  Major sleeper in the system who gets no national recognition.  Even if he ends up in the Giants bullpen, the starting experience will be a huge boost.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels took the Altoona Curve 4-2:

Steven Duggar CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .250.
Nestor Molina RHP- 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.95.

Speaking of seasons….Steven Duggar!  You may remember Nestor Molina as a promising pitching prospect for the Toronto Blue Jays who was traded to the White Sox for Sergio Santos.  Molina's career kind of stalled after that and the Giants picked him up about a month ago from the Mexican League. He's still just 27 yo.

*********************************************************************************

High A  San Jose Giants downed the Visalia Rawhide 6-1:

Ronnie Jebavy CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .250.
Rando Moreno SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .252.
Miguel Gomez 3B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .270.
TJ Bennett 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .293.
Conner Menez LHP- 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.94.
Dusten Knight RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.97.

After a slow start in SJ, Gomez' BA just keeps rising.  He can hit!  Strong start for the 2016 draftee Menez.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Augusta Greenjackets vs Rome Braves Postponed presumably due to weather related to the hurricane.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes vs Vancouver Canadians doubleheader Cancelled due to rain.

Game Wrap 9/2/2016: Cubs 2 Giants 1

1 run games are your friend when you are going well.  They are your enemy when you are not.  The Giants are not going well right now.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence- 1 for 3, HR(10), BB. BA= .285.  Pence has pretty much been the Giants offense for the first two games of this series.  The rest of the lineup is so cold, it is in danger of freezing over!  Oh, and the Giants might have set a record for line drive outs in this one.

Albert Suarez- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.29.  The Giants got about as good a start from Suarez as they could have hoped for.  We'll call it a QS for 5'th starters.  If the Giants got this game from their #5 SP every time, I'm sure they would gladly take it.  The bullpen did it's job too.  The Giants offense is just….so cold!

*********************************************************************************

The Dodgers also lost, 4-2 to the Padres, so the Giants remain 2 games behind the Hated Ones in the NL West.  They also remain 1.5 games ahead of the Cardinals for the first Wild Card Playoff spot and 3.5 games ahead of the Mets for the second Wild Card spot.

*********************************************************************************

Madison Bumgarner tries to get the Giants back in the Win column tomorrow facing Jake Arrieta who has had his own issues post All-Star Break.  It's a fairly good bet he'll have his mojo back against the Giants.

Down on the Farm: 9/1/2016

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Reno Aces 3-1:

Myles Schroder CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .219.
Grant Green LF- 2 for 3.  BA= .312.
Clayton Blackburn RHP- 8 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.36.

Clayton Blackburn sez "hey!  Don't forget about me!"

*********************************************************************************

AA  Richmond Flying Squirrels blanked the Hartford Yard Goats 7-0:

Ryder Jones 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .245.
Hunter Cole RF- 3 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .277.
Tyler Horan LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .270.
Jeff Arnold C- 3 for 3, 2B, Sac.  BA= .225.
Kyle Crick RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 5.04.
Joe Nathan RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Everybody seems to want to finish the season on a high note.  Even Kyle Crick mustered a nice start here at the end.  I'm getting the feeling the Yard Goats might not be exactly an offensive powerhouse.  Still think the Giants find some way to get Joe Nathan onto the 40 man and bring him to SF, but it's curious he has not moved up to Sacramento.  Any Squirrels fans have a scouting report?

*********************************************************************************

High A  Bakersfield Blaze burned the San Jose Giants 5-1:

Miguel Gomez 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .264.
Caleb Baragar LHP- 5.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 5 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.76.

*********************************************************************************

Low A Augusta Greenjackets were idle.

Short Season  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes vs Vancouver Canadians Suspended after 2 innings due to rain.

Game Wrap 9/1/2016: Cubs 5 Giants 4

Jeff Samardzija only lasted 4 innings and the bullpen could not make a 1 run lead stand up for 5 innings.  Key Lines:

Hunter Pence- 2 for 4, HR(9).  BA= .284.  The Big Fella seems to be finding his groove which is a very good thing for the Giants.  His first inning HR got the Giants off to a quick 2-run lead which only lasted until the bottom of the inning.

Jeff Samardzija- 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.06.   It's one thing to be shaky in the first inning.  Lots of good to great pitchers have first inning issues.  It's another to only complete 4 innings in a start.  It's just tough to expect a bullpen to protect a 1 run lead for 5 innings.  Not gonna happen often.

*********************************************************************************

The Loss drops the Giants to 2 games behind the NL West leading Dodgers.  The Giants lead the Cardinals in the race for the first Wild Card spot by 1.5 games and lead the Mets for the second Wild Card spot by 3.5 games.

*********************************************************************************

Albert Suarez gets the start tomorrow facing Jon Lester.  I think there is a good chance we see Ty Blach somewhere in that game.

Down on the Farm: 8/31/2016

AAA  Sacramento River Cats defeated the Reno Aces 5-3:

Travis Ishikawa 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB.  BA= .259.
Grant Green 2B-LF- 2 for 4, 2B, 3B.  BA= .308.
Ruben Tejada SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .291.
Joan Gregorio RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 5.45.
Tyler Rogers RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.46.

Gregorio's peripherals in the PCL look a lot better than his ERA.  With possibly 1 more start to go on the season, he stands with 113 K's against 40 BB in 102.1 IP.  The PCL is a tough place to pitch and this was Gregorio's first time facing the league.  Hopefully this is a springboard to more consistency and dominance next year.  When Brian Sabean was asked about which pitching prospects made the Giants comfortable giving up Mejia and Bickford, the 3 he mentioned were Tyler Beede, Andrew Suarez and Gregorio.

*********************************************************************************

AA  Hartford Yard Goats outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2 in 11 innings:

Hunter Cole RF- 3 for 6.  BA= .272.
Tyler Horan LF- 3 for 5, BB.  BA= .266.
CJ Hinojosa SS- 3 for 5.  BA= .255.
Matt Gage LHP- 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 3.38.

Last year, in his first full pro season, Matt Gage got an emergency callup from Augusta to Richmond,  He pitched so well, they kept him in Richmond the rest of the season.  He built on that this year with a strong full AA season in which he dominated at times.  Big lefty with a bright future!  Hunter Cole is headed to the AFL in October.  Horan is finishing strong.  Don't forget Hinojosa is playing in AA in his first full pro season.

*********************************************************************************

High A  Bakersfield Blaze torched the San Jose Giants 15-7:

Ronnie Jebavy CF- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .249.
Aramis Garcia C- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .265.
Daniel Carbonell LF- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .284.

Garcia is also headed to the AFL to get more AB's after missing much of this season after getting HBP in the face.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Augusta Greenjackets squeaked past the Lexington Legends 4-3(1'st game of DH, 7 innings):

Skyler Ewing 1B- 2 for 2, 2B, HR(10), BB.  BA= .241.
Jake McCasland RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 1.95.

McCasland broke out to dominate the SAL this year after kicking around the organization for 3 seasons.  He'll have to prove it's not just a case of an older prospect dominating at too low a level next year.

*********************************************************************************

Low A  Lexington Legends turned the tables on the Augusta Greenjackets 4-3(2'nd game of DH, 7 innings):

Junior Arias RF- 1 for 3, HR(11).  BA= .274.
Kelvin Beltre 3B- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .249.
Cesar Yanez RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.38.

Beltre is back in Augusta.  I think Augusta is in the SAL playoffs which will get him a few more AB's. I'm still driving the Cesar Yanez bandwagon!

*********************************************************************************

Short Season  Vancouver Canadians outscored the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 13-8:

Manuel Geraldo 3B- 2 for 5, SB(7).  BA= .298.
Ashford Fulmer CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(3).  BA= .299.
Heath Quinn RF- 3 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .337.
Ryan Howard SS- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .274.
Ryan Kirby 1B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .250.
Kevin Rivera 2B- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .322.
Zack Bowers C- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .220.
Matt Krook LHP- 0.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.35.

Nice game for padding the offensive stat lines.  Ooof!! Matt Krook seems to be regressing before out eyes.  Giants pitcher whisperers have their work cut out for them!
