Game Wrap 6/20/2023: Blue Jays 2 Giants 1
Keaton Winn had a Quality Start but got no run support as the Giants lost the rubber game of the series. Key Lines:
Patrick Bailey DH- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .324. Bailey DH'd because Joc Pederson had to play LF with multiple OF's on the IL. Bailey responded like a DH should with 2 hits and scored the Giants only run in the 9'th inning.

AAA: Reno Aces trumped the Sacramento River Cats 7-2.
Game Wrap 6/28/2023: Blue Jays 6 Giants 1
Perhaps the Blue Jays hitters were smarting over being shut down last night because they came out and tacked a 5-spot on Logan Webb RHP in the first inning. They only scored 1 more run the rest of the game but they got all the runs they needed and more in that first inning.
Austin Slater PH/RF batted for Michael Conforto RF who left the game with the dreaded hamstring tightness after bumping into the RF foul wall on a catch. Slater later hit a HR for the Giants only run of the game.
Lamonte Wade Jr 1B had 3 hits from the leadoff position in the lineup but it went for naught.
Ross Stripling RHP allowed 1 Run in 3 IP in his first appearance since coming of the IL and nope, it wasn't in a starting role.
Dodgers and D'Backs both lost so the NL West standing remain static. Giants maintain a 0.5 game lead over the Dodgers for the 2'nd of 3 Wild Card playoff spots. The Marlins won so now lead the Giants by 2 games for the first Wild Card spot.
The Giants try for a series win tomorrow with TBD facing Chris Bassitt RHP. Speaking of.....what's going on with Sean Manaea LHP? He's pitched exactly 2 innings in 2 appearances since June16.

Complex Performances:
Justin Bench LF(ACL, 23 yo)- 3 for 4. BA= .333. 2022 17'th round draft pick.
Estanlin Cassiani CF(ACL, 20 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SB(2). BA= .265.
Javier Castillo DH(ACL, 19 yo)- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .308.
Samuel Reyes RF(ACL, 20 yo)- 2 for 3, 2B, BB. BA= .378.
Elian Rayo 3B(ACL, 20 yo)- 2 for 3, 2B, HR(3), BB. BA= .229.
Anthony Tandron SS(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 4, BB, SB(2). BA= .320.
Dario Reynoso 2B(DSL, 18 yo)- 2 for 3, HR(2), 2 BB, 2 SB(7). BA= .356.
Angel Guzman LF(DSL, 17 yo)- 2 for 5, HR(3). BA= .364.
Frainer Mejias RHP(DSL, 17 yo)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 6.00.
Great to see how many 17 and 18 year old players are putting up strong numbers in the DSL this season. There seems to be lot more talent down there than just Rayner Arias.
Scouting the 2023 Draft: Four More Players
Bryce Eldridge RHP/1B HS. DOB: 10/20/2004. B-L, T-R. 6' 7", 220 lbs.
Could be the one true 2-way player in the draft, which is why Giants fans should be aware of him going in. Tremendous size with oodles of room for growth. Mid-90's FB with 2 good secondary pitches. Tremendous LH power with a relatively short stroke giving him enough contact to reach his power. Per MLB capsule scouting report, most scouts lean toward developing him as a hitter but there is serious debate and some team(like the Giants) might seriously try to develop him both ways. Also has enough speed and athleticism to play RF and obviously has the arm. BTW, he looks more like a pitcher to my eye.
Nolan Schanuel 1B/OF College. DOB: 2/14/2002. B-L, T-R. 6'4", 220 lbs.
Chase Davis OF College. DOB: 12/5/2021. B-L, T-L. 6' 1", 215 lbs.
Walker Martin SS HS: DOB: 2/20/2004. B-L, T-R. 6'2", 188 lbs.
2-sport athlete from Colorado. Also played QB for his HS. Great size for a SS with both hit and power tools which would play at 3B if he has to move there.

A baserunning mistake by Blake Sabol LF ended the Giants best and last chance for another come-from-behind win. Key Lines:

AAA: Sacramento River Cats defeated the Round Rock Express 5-2.
Game Wrap 6/14/2023: Giants 7 D'Backs 6
Luis Matos' first MLB home run was the difference in a hard fought win and which also clinched a series win over the NL West leading D'Backs. Key Lines:
Joc Pederson DH- 2 for 4, 3B. BA= .272. Joc was in the thick of most of the Giants rallies. He drove in a run with a groundout in the first inning. Later singled and scored on Blake Sabol's 2-out single(more on that later) and then tripled in a run and scored on Sabol's sac fly.
Micheal Conforto RF- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .239. Conforto has stepped up the last two games in YtY's abscence. He doubled in a run in the first inning. After that the D'Backs clearly pitched around him twice(more on that later).
Blake Sabol LF- 1 for 3, SF. BA= .260. Talk about stepping up. Sabol continues to show he has a special bat which the D'Backs found out the hard way. In the 3'rd inning, with Joc Pederson at first and 2 outs, Merrill Kelly RHP clearly pitched around Conforto to face Sabol but Sabol spanked a single to R-CF which easily scored Joc. He later drove in Joc from 3B on a Sac Fly for his second big RBI of the game.
Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, HR(1). BA= .257. Just as I was wondering if maybe Matos is a bit short on power, he pulled a 2-run HR down the LF line to give the Giants a 7-5 lead and proved to be the game-winning hit.
Keaton Winn RHP- 3 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.75. Winn was lights out with a devastating FB/Split combo for 3 innings. Then he got BABIP'd to start the 5'th with a bunt single, SB, groundball single before giving up a line drive single to drive in a run. That brought in Sean Manaea LHP who got force-out at 2B except the on-field ump called the runner safe and it was upheld on replay despite a slow-mo video clearly showing Crawford's foot hitting the bag before the runner. Christian Walker followed with a double to drive in the last 2 of Winn's runners. In short, Winn pitched much better than the line indicates and that FB/split combo looks like a keeper.
Rogers Bros- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's. Winn's first 3 shutout innings and these 3 by Taylor and Tyler are really what won the game from the pitching side.
The Win cut the D'Backs lead over the Giants in the NL West to 1.5 games. They remain in the top spot in the Wild Card race 0.5 games ahead of the Marlins and 1.0 games ahead of the Dodgers pending the outcome of the Dodgers game against the Astros.

Gary Sanchez C(Padres) avenged yesterday's plate blocking call by hitting a 3-run HR before the fans could find their seats and you had to know this game was over right then and there. Manny Machado added a 3-run HR of his own later in the game and the Giants managed just 3 hits in the game. Not much else to say about this one.

Game Wrap 6/21/2023: Giants 4 Padres 2
The Giants got another outstanding bulk-inning performance from a rookie pitcher and made the 4-spot they put up against Yu Darvish in the 5'th inning stand up. Key Lines:
Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, SB(2). BA= .304. They were infield hits but they count just the same. Matos started the 4-run rally with an IF hit, stole 2B and scored on Brandon Crawford SS's Sac Fly.
Blake Sabol C- 2 for 4, 2B. BA= .257. Sabol had a weird night. His double did not figure in the scoring. His single glanced off Xander Bogaerts SS's Glove into LF. Later in the inning, he was out by a mile trying to score from 2B with 2 outs on Joc Pederson DH's groundball single to RF but Gary Sanchez C clearly blocked the plate forcing Sabol to go way out of his normal path to the plate. He was initially called out and the replay umps took forever and a month of Mondays to make the call but they got it right and called interference and the run scored and the inning stayed alive for 2 more hits and runs.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 3. BA= .259. YtY singled in the 3'rd run of the 5'th inning but later pulled up at 3B with what appeared to be a significant hammy strain on J. D. Davis 3B RBI single to R-CF. After the game it was reported that He had hamstring "tightness" but he missed 15 games in May with a hammy strain so you've got to think this is going to result in an IL stint. He's been a key cog in the Giants current win streak so this is not good.
Casey Schmitt 2B- 0 for 1, 2 BB. BA= .262. Schmitt has been noticeably more selective at the plate lately and he drew 2 walks in this game. He still has a weakness for sliders in the dirt but the improved plate discipline is encouraging.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 7.79. Hjelle showed good command of a 96 MPH fastball and a wipeout breaking ball and he stifled the Padres long enough for the Giants to get their lead. the rest of the bullpen made it stand up. I am a big Hjelle fan and am thrilled to see this. He's a unique talent with his dominant height and gives opposing teams a decidedly different look.
The Win was the Giants 10'th in a row. They move into the top Wild Card playoff spot by 0.5 games over the Marlins and 1 game over the Dodgers. They continue to trail the D'Backs in the NL West by 2.5 games.

Complex Performances:
Donovan Walton DH(ACL)- 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB. BA= .400. Memba Walton? Maybe you didn't want to hear this but he's on a rehab assignment.
Ryan Reckley SS(ACL, 18 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(1). BA= .237. I think this is Reckley's first pro HR.
Guillermo Williamson LF(ACL, 19 yo)- 1 for 3, HR(5), BB. BA= .353. The sky's the limit for Williamson if he can continue to make enough contact to maintain a BA.
Game Wrap 6/19/2023: Giants 7 Padres 4(10 innings)

Game Wrap 6/17/2023: Giants 15 Dodgers 0
Luis Matos started a 4-run rally in the 5'th inning and the Giants kept piling on for a crushing win over the Dodgers in Chavez Ravine. Key Lines:
Luis Matos CF- 2 for 4, 2 BB, SB(1). BA= .375. We'll start with Matos because he was the guy to sparked the Giants offense against Bobby Miller RHP who looked invincible until Matos drew a leadoff walk in the 5'th. Miller had been blowing 100 MPH fastballs past helpless looking Giants hitters through 4 innings. Matos led off the 5'th inning with a walk which didn't seem like much. He was the third Giants leadoff batter to reach base. The difference here is Matos stole 2B which might have rattled the rook a bit. Patrick Bailey C struck out on a foul tip but then Miller tried to pick Matos off 2B. The ball glanced off something into CF and Matos scampered to 3B. Miller then hung a curveball to Brandon Crawford who singled Matos home. The #9 batter, Casey Schmitt 3B was HBP to put runners at 1B and 2B. Lamonte Wade Jr 1B deposited another hung curve into the RF bullpen and the route was one. Matos ended up reaching base 4 times and scoring 4 runs. He also made numerous running catches in CF which he made all look easy including one where he had to climb the wall to bring it down. A great evening for Luis Matos!
Lamonte Wade Jr 1B- 3 for 5, HR(9), BB. BA= .280. 3-run HR's win ballgames and LMWJ delivered that in the 5'th inning but he had two more hits and a walk driving in a total of 5 runs and scoring 3. What a sensational season he is having!

Game Wrap 6/14/2023: Giants 8 Cardinals 5(10 innings)
The Giants marked the dawn of the Luis Matos Era by roaring back from a 5-2 deficit after 6 innings to win in overtime. Key Lines:
Luis Matos CF- 1 for 3. BA= .333. Matos followed Austin Slater LF's leadoff single with another single and scored the Giants second run of the game on Patrick Bailey C's single. Matos lined out in two later AB's so hit the ball hard 3 times in 3 PA's.
Thairo Estrada 2B- 2 for 5, SB(15). BA= .296. Estrada moved down to 3'rd in the lineup today(oh, the horror!). He singled twice, drove in 2 runs and scored one. He singled in YtY who was the designated runner to start the 10'th inning then stole 2B and scored on Wilmer Flores DH/3B single to account for 2 of the Giants 3 extra-inning runs.
Mike Yastrzemski RF/CF- 2 for 4, HR(8). BA= .254. YtY's second HR in as many days came in the 9'th with 2 outs and 2 strikes and tied the game setting up the extra-inning win.
Anthony DeSclafani RHP- 3 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 4.31. Tony D struck out the side in the first inning but then things went south in a hurry with Tommy Edman, the #9 hitter in the lineup hitting a grand slam HR in the 2'nd inning. DeSclafani exited after giving up another run in the 3'rd inning and the score remained 5-2 until the 7'th inning when the Giants started their comeback.
Bullpen- 7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 K's. The bullpen was nails once again. Jake Junis RHP pitched 3 shutout innings with the Rogers Bros and Ryan Walker RHP throwing a scoreless inning each and Camilo Doval RHP recorded his 18'th Save.
