Game Wrap 6/20/2025: Red Sox 7 Giants 5

The Giants scored some runs but continued to miss out on opportunities and the pitching couldn't hold back a relentless Red Sox attack in a sloppy game.  Oh!  And the 19 MPH wind out to CF only seemed to blow when the Red Sox were up.  Key Lines:

The Giants lineup drew 8 walks but managed just 7 hits, all singles.  Heliot Ramos LF(.283) and Casey Schmitt 3B(.250) had 2 hits each.

Rafael Devers DH- 0 for 5.  BA= .267.  Devers had a couple of long outs, one the CF caught up against the L-CF wall but his 0 for 5 was the most glaring hole in the lineup.  The Giants 3, 4 and 5 hitters went a combined 1 for 14.  I don't know what Devers is chewing but I'm not sure I can watch that for the next 9 years.

Christian Koss 2B- 0 for 2, 2 GIDP, E.  BA= .219.  It's tough when you are only playing once a week but Koss had a rough night.  Oddly enough, two of the Giants runs scored on his batted balls but both came on GIDP's with with bases loaded and no outs so he was not credited with RBI's. In one case YtY followed with in infield single to get the second run home but those were two missed opportunities to add on.  Later in the game when Patrick Bailey drew a 2-out walk, Melvin did some maneuvering bringing the lefty hitter Daniel Johnson in to pinch-hit.  When Red Sox Manager Joey Cora countered with a lefty pitcher, Melvin pulled Johnson back and sent up Tyler Fitzgerald who struck out swinging and did not come within shouting distance of making contact.  Is there another Marco Scutaro out there somewhere? Christian's error led to an unearned that was ultimately not the difference in the game.

Hayden Birdsong RHP- 4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.25.  Birdsong looked sharp for the first two innings then suddenly started to get hit hard in the third inning and it was all downhill from there.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.66.  Hjelle got out of Birdsong's jam in the 5'th inning but gave up a solo bomb to Cedanne Rafaela in the 6'th.  What's with giving up 2 home runs and 5 of the Red Sox 11 hits to the #8 and 9 hitters?

Joey Lucchesi LHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 13.50.  So far it looks like Lucchesi has nothing.  Apparently Melvin thought so too and came out with the quick hook.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.20.  Kruk and Kuip commented that this is the sharpest Walker looked in a long time.

Spencer Bivens RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.11. Bivens also looked sharp but too little his effort was too late as the lineup failed to mount a comeback.

Landen Roupp RHP tries to stop the bleeding today in an afternoon start facing Brayan Bello RHP who comes in with a 3.49 ERA.

  1. That was a frustrating sloppy game to watch. Yes its tough that Koss only plays once a week. Would have liked to have seen him make Dobbins throw him a few more pitches after walking the bases loaded in the 2nd inning, instead of GIDP on the 2nd pitch of the at bat with the run scoring.. That was ok but when Koss GIDP with the bases loaded again in the 4th inning i couldnt believe it, had a bad feeling about the game. PAVs wrote later the Koss became the 3rd player in MLB within the past 50 years to GIDP twice with the bases loaded with a run scoring in the same game. Yikes! That's not something a player would want to go in the record book for. Oh well better luck tomorrow.

  2. I'm thinking Brandon Lowe fr TB, or Colt Keith fr Det for as upgrades for 2B.

    1. Both teams are in the Playoff race. Chapman will be back eventually.

    2. With Detroit, my guess is it would be easier to pick up Javier Baez, but only if the team is willing to spend even more by picking up the last 2 1/2 years of his contract (looks like about 65 million left). He is finally hitting again this year

Perhaps the Red Sox would be interested in trading Kristian Campbell for Marco Luciano in some combination. They seem to have similar problems.

  3. Watching the game went from early hope to frustration to almost anger watching the Giants swing or pretend to swing whatever. That said sitting where they are belies some of the things we are seeing.
So time to throw in some optomism.
Todays prediction > Roupp goes a strong 6 > everyone up and down the lineup hits the ball > Devers has his breakout Giants game.
No magic mushrooms here > just plain out believe that this time with its pitching is better than we are seeing. Go Giants,
FYI > liking Bailey's plate since his return from the IR,

  4. "what Devers is chewing" will be easier to take when he's driving in runs...
Watching Fitzgerald flail is hard too.
YtY did get a hit, a walk, a run, and an RBI but he also failed to advance 4 runners.
Adames, Schmitt, and Bailey got on base 3 times each (!) but the 9th batter failed miserably — unless twice scoring a run with a double play is acceptable. The Red Sox evidentially thought it was a good tradeoff.
Can Chapman help this? Bad break for him and the G's!

  5. Giants still in 2nd place ... San Diego lost, too and are 3-7 in the last 10 games (worse than SF). So, it looks like the baseball gods haven't yet given up on SF. (Lowe or Keith might make sense for 2B upgrades, but the Rays and Tigers will want a king's ransom for them ... )

  6. Hopefully there's another Dom Smith out there that we can plug and play at second. I think Meckler is gonna get a crash course at second in Sacramento at this point.

    1. Hmm....yes, Wade Meckler did play 2B for Sacramento last night. He went 0 for 4 and made an error. He didn't play the game before that, played DH the game before that and LF the game before that. Why do people keep saying he's getting a "crash course" in playing 2B?

    2. Maybe with his 3 errors in 22 chances @ 2B, he needs a "crash course"?

    3. Posey should be calling Texas about Marcus Siemian to plug the second base hole.

  7. Bailey;s plate presence > sheesh

  8. Rosenthal in the Athletic speculates that they will trade for Urias (Baltimore 3B) and have him play 2B. I’m not sure that’s a good idea.
