This game had disaster written all over it for the Giants. They were facing a struggling rookie lefthander which is usually enough to sink them right there, but add in Coors Field and what sounds like a serious injury to their best position player and it looked ominous. Things were not looking any better going to the 9'th inning trailing 5-2, then things took a weird turn, but in a good way. Casey Schmitt led off with a home run to make it 5-3. Two walks, a force-out, a wild pitch and another walk loaded the bases with one out. Heliot Ramos got a run in with a Sac Fly and Dave Fleming announced that it's all up to Wilmer Flores. I texted my friend and said, "it's alway up to Wilmer!" When it got down to 2-strikes, as always with Wilmer, you had a feeling it was too soon to count him out. When he beat out a swinging bunt to tie the game I burst out laughing even though nobody else was watching with me. And how fitting that YtY lined a single to R to drive in the winning run? We all survived another inning in Doval's Torture Chamber and turned off the TV happy. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 5, 3B, 2 R. BA= .274. Lee led off the game with a triple and scored on Willy Adames' sac fly. The Giants would manage just one more run until the 9'th inning.
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 3, HR(6), BB, SF, 2 R, 2 RBI. BA= .194. Just when we hoped Adames would shed some of the pressure he's putting on himself, his infield partner, Matt Chapman, goes on the IL. Adames did have a good game after a 2-day reset.
Wilmer Flores DH- 2 for 4, HBP, RBI. BA= .255. How many ways has Wilmer found to win games? In honor of His Clutchness, for one day I am renaming the Giants in his honor.
Mike Yastrzemski PH/RF- 1 for 2, RBI. BA= .235. Good to see YtY with another game-winning hit.
Casey Schmitt 3B- 2 for 4, HR(1), R, RBI. BA= .204. With Chapman apparently out for awhile, Schmitt is going to get his big chance to prove he's an MLB hitter. He's off to a good start.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.56. After 54 pitches in two innings, it didn't look like Young Kyle would last more than 4 innings. He got through 5 and kept it close enough to give his team a chance to win.
Spencer Bivens RHP- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.38. Bivens was terrific for 2 innings then got touched for 2 runs and had to be bailed out by Erik Miller LHP. As things stood at that point, Kyle Harrison was on the hook for the loss.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Save(10). ERA= 1.45. Doval had his torture chamber in action as he gave up a leadoff hit, erased that with a GIDP but then put runners first and third with a walk and bloop single before getting Forever Giant Thairo Estrada to fly out to Jung Hoo Lee for the final out.
The Win is the Wilmers 6'th in a row, all by one run, and puts the them 0.5 games out of first place.
Robbie Ray LHP tries to keep the magic going tomorrow evening facing Kyle Freeland LHP.
As mentioned above, Matt Chapman was placed on the IL with what was initially described as hand inflammation but was updated to a ligament sprain and bone bruise suffered while sliding into a base. Let's just say that sounds like potentially more than a 10-14 day stay on the IL. He is scheduled to see a specialist in Los Angeles.
Over the next 2 weeks we'll finally get to see if Schmitt has more than just "potential". I'm really hoping he can show something.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't be surprised to see 3B Abe Toro switch to the G's for a pen arm when the RedSox come to town. Switch hitter
ReplyDeletehaving a decent year.
the thought sequence: worst team in baseball. check. a pitcher with an 8+ ERA on the worst team. check. Colors field. yup a sure loss... as for Schmidt, this your chance. dazzle us, please. -es
ReplyDeleteChapman thinks he will be back to get into a few games prior to the all-star break but I suspect he will be back after the break. I suffered a similar injury in May of last year and it took about ten months to regain my grip strength and I still notice discomfort. He has access to better physical therapy so he should recover faster but it probably will take more than a couple of weeks.
ReplyDeleteChapman is going to see Dr Shen, in Los Angeles, who is a hand specialist that operated on Curry’s hand. This is per McCovey Chronicles’ Bryan Murphy. Looks like he’s getting the best of care but the fact that he needs to see a hand specialist leads me to think it is more serious than the reported strained ligaments and hand bruise.
DeletePapa and Silver were discussing Chapman's injury on KNBR this morning. They were saying that if it was just inflammation, the best case scenario is that Chapman would be out about a month. Even though they just saw inflammation on the initial evaluation, it is possible that Chapman might need surgery to one or all three of the involved fingers. It might mean he would be sidelined for a couple of months.
DeleteI think surgery will depend on whether ligaments are torn or not. In any case, based on the limited available information, I would say a return after the All-Star break is an extremely optimistic scenario.
DeleteIn the category of sour grapes, 5 RP had Sunday off, all 8 had Monday off, so did Melvin really have to get 3 innings out of Bivens?
ReplyDeleteAlthough he hadn't been in trouble, he had runners in each of his first 2 innings and 21 pitches in the 7th with the top of the order coning up in the 8th.
Bivens had only pitched 3 innings once.
And it is Colorado, home to big scores with only 5 of 32 home games with 5 or fewer runs scored and the Rockies had lost most of them.
Gotta admit I had the game on TV but kind of tuned it out during the Bivens innings but I thought the same when I looked at the boxscore.
DeleteResting everyone for the Dodgers?
DeleteGiants are huge favorites today with Ray pitching, the most heavily favored road team with an unusually high over/under. Ominous?
ReplyDeleteDodgers are also favored in San Diego with Justin Wrobleski (1-2, 7.20) pitching (???), but if SF and SD win their games, the Giants will be in 1st place on Thursday, June 12, 2025!
I have never seen Wilmer go so fast as when he was running out that single in the 9th!
ReplyDeleteIn their defense, Bivens and Camilo had multiple pitches called balls that were better than previous pitches called strikes. Erratic strike zone in the late innings had the eyebrows raising and body language on the mound not looking hot. Probably didn’t help pitching to a new catcher when we’re talking fractions of inches and framing. Glad we pulled it out anyway!
ReplyDeleteJust Win Baby!...Offence still a mess but they are getting it done somehow, someway......Will be much harder against better teams or a team playing well like the Giants found out with Minny and Detroit....CHAPMAN was on a good streak...big loss right now....but SCHMIDT can handle the play in the field..just need a little offense from him as well as maybe please maybe ADAMES finding the spark after the reset (maybe BAILEY too!) to pick up the slack...Johnson/Kinzler/Encarnacion/Brown are no answers at the plate but the moves did jolt the team a bit.....MIght be time for Grant McCRAY also..is on a good consistent streak right now..
ReplyDeleteHopefully, RAY keeps it up (is bound to have an Off game at some point and it often happens in Colorado!) and the offense can do enough to win this series..

Wilmer's dribble single in the 9th inning reminded me that there is BABIP luck in baseball. Does anyone agree that the Giants are currently outperforming their talent level?
ReplyDeleteThe BABIP gods giveth and they taketh. I don't have numbers but to my eye the Giants have had an unusually high number of hard-hit balls find opposing team's gloves so maybe it all evens out and they are where they should be. We also may be underestimating the talent level of their pitching that keeps them competitive in games when they aren't hitting.
DeleteThey are where they should be by RS/RA.

Sweet game!
ReplyDeleteRegarding the Rockies' "triple" to left center alley in the 8th, Ramos does not pass the eye test. Really very bad route he ran. Definitely not an average defender. Not Pat Burrell, but a liability for sure. We'll take it all day long for that bat! Go G's!
