Down on the Farm: 7/31/2025

AAA:  Albuquerque Isotopes burned the Sacramento River Cats 8-4.

Thomas Gavello 2B- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .397.
Hunter Bishop RF- 2 for 5, HR(7).  BA= .254.
Marco Luciano LF- 3 for 3, 2 2B, HR(20).  BA= .225.
Wade Meckler DH- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .274.
Antonio Jimenez LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 8 K's.  ERA= 3.71.

I believe Luciano's 20 HR leads the organization by a big margin.  Should the Giants give him an audition over the next 2 months in spite of his low BA?  I know I've tried to curb folks irrational exuberance over Wade Meckler but he sure seems to have a similar skill set to players Buster seems to be collecting via draft and trades.  Is Antonio Jimenez a starter now?  He had a very rough start to the season but has had ERA's of 3.38 in May, 2.53 in June and 3.00 in July.  This was his third consecutive start and his longest appearance of the season.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels vs Somerset Patriots postponed by rain.

A+:  Everett Aquasox buried the Eugene Emeralds 6-1.

Nothing to see here.

A:  San Jose Giants defeated the Stockton Ports 6-1.

Jean Carlos Sio LF- 1 for 2, HR(5), 3 BB.  BA= .308.
Jhonny Level SS- 0 for 5.  BA= .000.
Robert Hipwell 1B- 2 for 3, HR(10), BB.  BA= .248.
Ryan Reckley RF- 1 for 3, BB, 2 SB(4).  BA= .151.
Luis De La Torre LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Ricardo Estrada LHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 2 K's, 6/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.10.

Rough full season debut for Jhonny Level.  It's a tough transition from the complex league at best and harder later in the season after the competition has gotten more experience at the level.  I think it's a harder transition for hitters than pitchers.  Speaking of, Luis De La Torre has been nothing short of sensational since his promotion with 14 consecutive scoreless innings with 19 K's and 3 BB's.  Estrada has performed well since his call up too.  In addition to Level, the Giants promoted Argenis Cayama RHP and Keyner Martinez RHP from the ACL to San Jose.  We should also be seeing some draft picks come online soon.

DSL:  Giants Orange topped Cubs Blue 5-4(7 innings).

Yulian Barreto 2B(17 yo)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .324.
Carlos Concepcion RF(19 yo)- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .274.
Djean Macares CF(17 yo)- 2 for 2, HBP.  BA= .227.
Boris Sarduy LF(18 yo)- 1 for 3, 2B. BA= .167.
Jose Trevizo RHP(17 yo)- 2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.63.
Omar Calcurian RHP(20 yo)- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.28.

DSL:  Giants Black edged out Blue Jays Red 3-2.

Josuar Gonzalez SS(17 yo)- 2 for 3, BB, 2 SB(24).  BA= .259.
Evan Estevez 1B(17 yo)- 1 for 3, BB, SB(8).  BA= .269.
Alberto Laroche RHP(19 yo)- 4 IP, 1 H 2 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 1.51.
Carlos Toro RHP(18 yo)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.33.

I saw somebody laid a Jose Reyes comp on Josuar Gonzalez.  After a long string of early injuries to their top international signees, Jhonny Level and Josuar have gotten full season's worth of PA's and general development in their first DSL season.  Don't underestimate the importance of that early development experience.

Thoughts on the Trade Deadline

If there were any lingering doubts about whether Buster Posey was in sell mode, he dropped the hammer on those just minutes before the 3 PM PDT deadline by trading Camilo Doval RHP and Mike Yastrzemski OF for prospects.  This feels a bit like sifting through the smoldering aftermath of a train wreck but let's break it down:

Trade #1:  Giants trade Camilo Doval RHP to the Yankees for four prospects:  Jesus Rodriguez C/3B, Trystan Vrieling RHP, Parks Harber 1B/3B and Carlos De La Rosa LHP.

We all know about Doval, his elite talent and struggles with command, holding runners on base, the pitch clock and general body language.  What raises some eyebrows here is while he is arbitration eligible, he is not eligible for free agency for 2 more seasons.  Buster either felt he had an offer from the Yankees he couldn't refuse or he gave up on Doval ever fully harnessing his talent.  Here's a breakdown of the players coming to the Giants:

Jesus Rodriguez C/3B.  DOB:  4/23/2002.  B-R, T-R.  5' 10", 208 lbs.  On 40-man MLB roster with 3 options.

2025(AAA):   .300/.390/.404, 14 2B, 3 3B, 5 HR, 17 SB, 12.2 BB%, 15.6 K%, 392 PA.

Fits the Buster contact profile to a T and with surprising SB numbers for a C/3B.  Limited power numbers but Fangraphs rates his raw power as a 50.  Assigned to AAA Sacramento but would not be at all surprised to see him get a look at the MLB level before the season is done since there is no downside in terms of options.  I am intrigued by the hit tool here as catchers who can hit at all at the MLB level are scarce as hen's teeth which may be what Buster is looking at too.

Trystan Vrieling RHP.  DOB:  10/2/2000.  6' 4", 200 lbs.  Drafted in 2022 Round 3 out of college.  Rule 5 eligible in Dec 2025.

2025(AA):  1-2, 4.50, 46 IP, 8.22 K/9, 3.52 BB/9.
2025(AAA):  1-2, 4.36, 53.2 IP, 9.06 K/9, 3.35 BB/9.

Fangraphs rates his curveball and cutters as his best pitches.  MLB Pipeline calls it a slider/cutter and adds a 2-seam sinker in the low 90's up to 96 MPH.  He spend most of 2024 on the IL with a stress reaction in his elbow but has been healthy this season.  Ceiling is probably back-of-rotation SP.

Parks Harber 1B/3B.  DOB:  9/25/2001.  B-R, T-R.  6' 3", 225 lbs.  Undrafted Free Agent in 2024.  Rule 5 eligible Dec. 2027.
2025(A):  .304/.422/.551, 4 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 4 SB, 14.5 BB%, 26.5 K%, 83 PA.
2025(A+):  .326/.395/.489, 11 2B, 3B, 3 HR, 2 SB, 10.5 BB%, 23.0 K%, 152 PA.

More of an FZ type player.  Classic corner IF power hitter size.  Fangraphs has him on the 7-day IL with an undisclosed injury. He last played June 12.  Has hit well enough at A+ to justify a trial in AA although if he does play this year would likely go through a rehab assignment first.

Carlos De La Rosa LHP.  DOB:  11/30/2007.  5' 11", 178 lbs.  Rule 5 eligible Dec. 2029.

2025(DSL):  0-1, 5.32, 22 IP, 14.73 K/9, 2.05 BB/9.

Add his name to the Giants growing stable of promising young international pitching prospects.  And yes, you remembered right.  They already have a Jose De La Rosa RHP and a Luis De La Torre LHP so stay on your toes with these prospect names.  Some analysts think Carlos De La Rosa has the highest ceiling of the 4 returning prospects in the trade but with the obvious risk of the age and league.  I saw one note on social media that his FB is up to 96 MPH.

Overall the return is more quantity that quality for a Closer-capable pitcher with 2 years of control remaining on his contract but maybe Doval's well-known warts finally became too much for Buster and maybe Buster felt this was the best value he was ever going to get for him.

Trade #2:  Giants trade Mike Yastrzemski OF to the Royals for Yunior Marte RHP.

First off, this is not the Yunior Marte we all fondly remember from the 2022 season.  That Yunior Marte is 30 years old and pitching in Japan this season.  This Yunior Marte is 6' 5" and 21 years old.  Again we all know Mike Yastrzemski aka Yaz the Younger(YtY).  He is a microcosm of Farhan Zaidi's tenure as POBO:  Obtained in a trade off the Orioles scrap heap and given a chance in The Churn.  Minutes away from being Churned out, he stayed on the MLB roster due to another player's injury and made the most of the opportunity.  His best season was the pandemic-shortened 2020 when he hit .297/.400/.568 with 10 HR.  He had some great moments including several memorable walk-off HR's but also became increasingly prone to looonnng batting slumps including the particularly brutal current one.  He is eligible for free agency at the end of this season and it was hard to see him coming back next season.

Yunior Marte RHP.  DOB:  9/8/2003.  6' 5", 210 lbs.  Rule 5 Eligible Dec. 2026.

2025(A):  3-5, 2.74, 82 IP, 8.67 K/9, 2.20 BB/9.

Ideal size with a FB/slider/split pitch mix with FB mid-upper 90's.  Fangraphs rates FB 50/55 and the slider 50/60.  Nice lottery ticket considering YtY is in a horrendous slump and is a free agent after the season.

In a possibly related note, it's been reported that Grant McCray OF and Kai-Wei Teng RHP were late scratches from the AAA Sacramento River Cats game in Albuquerque tonight.

Down on the Farm: 7/30/2025

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats cooled off the Albuquerque Isotopes 7-3.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 4, BB.  BA= .238.
Grant McCray CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .260.
Tyler Fitzgerald 2B- 3 for 5.  BA= .311.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.65.
Braxton Roxby RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.96.

Starting OF's for this game:  Meckler LF, McCray CF, Encarnacion RF.

AA:  Somerset Patriots downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-3.

Bo Davidson DH- 2 for 4, HR(2).  BA= .250.
Turner Hill CF- 2 for 4.  BA= 248.
Scott Bandura LF- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .200.
Nick Zwack LHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.93.

A+: Eugene Emeralds topped the Everett Aquasox 6-4.

Maui Ahuna SS- 1 for 4, BB, SB(1).  BA= .333.
Drew Cavanaugh C- 2 for 3, HR(5), BB.  BA= .337.
Jakob Christian RF- 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR(1), 2 SB(2).  BA= .207.
Dylan Carmouche LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's, 8/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 2.76.

Huge game for Jakob Christian.

A:  San Jose Giants beat the Stockton Ports 4-2.

Nate Furman 2B- 1 for 1, HR(1), BB.  BA= 1.000.
Robert Hipwell 1B- 1 for 2, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .243.
Niko Mazza RHP- 4.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K's.  ERA= 2.34.
Ubert Mejias RHP- 3.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.54.
Cole Hillier RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(4).  ERA= 2.83.

Giants DSL teams were idle.

Game Wrap 7/30/2025: Pirates 2 Giants 1(10 innings)

An extra-inning loss marked a new low point and Buster Posey ran up the white flag on the season trading Tyler Rogers RHP in a clear "sell" signal.  Key Lines:

Dominic Smith 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .265.  Smith drove in Heliot Ramos LF from 2B with a 4'th inning single to give the Giants a short-lived 1-0 lead.  He had the only multi-hit game out of the Giants total of 6 hits, all singles.

Logan Webb RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 11 K's.  ERA= 3.31.  This was Webb's best start out of his last 4 but still fell an out short of a Quality Start due to walks and a high pitch count.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.09.  Giants beat writers say Doval is officially on the trading block.  If this was a showcase it didn't hurt his value.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.12.  Walker had a chance to get out of it with a comebacker GIDP but got the ball to 2B too late.  The out was recorded at 1B but the runner from 3B scored the winning run.

The Giants half of the 10'th inning was just as frustrating.  Jung Hoo Lee CF was the designated runner.  Casey Schmitt 2B singled on a flyball to LF but Lee couldn't advance.  Mike Yastrzemski RF successfully bunted the runners to 3'rd and 2'nd, but Patrick Bailey C and Heliot Ramos struck out to leave them stranded.

So.......this loss not only completes a losing sweep at home to one of the worst teams in the league, but a losing sweep of the entire 6 game homestand.  It also marked their 12'th loss in 14 games in what has to be one of the worst 2-week spans in team history.

Tomorrow is a travel day then they start a 6-game road trip against these same teams.  Brutal!  Just brutal!

After weeks of most analysts assuming Buster Posey would be aggressive at the trade deadline to get the team back on track and make a run for it, he instead folded his cards and traded away Tyler Rogers to the Mets in a deal that was first reported by Alex Pavlovic just as the game got started.  At the same time, Alex also reported that Camilo Doval RHP is also available for trade.  The Giants get 3 players in return from the Mets including a decent MLB reliever which is also interesting.  Let''s break it down:

Jose Butto RHP.  DOB:  3/19/1998.  6' 1", 202 lbs.  Pre-arbitration- eligible 2027.

2025:  3-2, 3.64, 47 IP, 7.85 K/9, 4.21 BB/9, 1.62 GB/FB, 1 Save.

Butto features a 95 MPH sinker with a slider and changeup.  A strong GB tendency makes up for a less than ideal K/BB.  He can go more than one inning and started 7 games in both 2023 and 2024.  He won't be as reliable in late innings as Rogers but he does give Melvin additional options including possibly stretching him out to be a starter or a bulk inning guy in a bullpen game.

Blade Tidwell RHP.  DOB:  6/8/2001.  6' 4", 207 lbs.  On the 40-man roster but has 3 options.

2025(AAA):  6-4, 4.10, 79 IP, 9.91 K/9, 3.65 BB/9.
2025 (MLB):  1-1, 9.00, 15 IP, 6.00 K/9, 6.00 BB/9.

Mets 2'nd round draft pick in 2022 out of Univ. of Tennessee.  Struggled after a promotion to AAA last season but with improved numbers this year.  96 MPH 4-seam FB, 95 MPH 2-seam, Slider, Changeup.  Four MLB appearances which indicate he is not ready for The Show at this time.

Drew Gilbert OF.  DOB:  9/27/2000.  B-L, T-L.  5' 9", 195 lbs.  Not on 40-man roster.  Rule 5 eligible Dec. 2025.

2025(AAA):  .246/.349/.435, 14 HR, 3 SB, 11.2 BB%, 15.9 K%.

First round draft pick #28 overall by Astros in 2022 also from Tennessee.  Traded to Mets in 2023 for Justin Verlander.  Contact, contact contact is the watchword for what type of prospect bats Buster is looking for.  Gilbert joins the logjam of AAA level OF prospects but the 3 options buys time to further develop and evaluate him.

Overall a pretty impressive haul for a non-closer reliever who will be a free agent at the end of the season although none jump out as a future impact players.

Oh, and the Giants DFA'd Sean Hjelle RHP to make room for Tidwell in the 40-man roster.

Down on the Farm: 7/29/2025

AAA:  Albuquerque Isotopes annihilated the Sacramento River Cats 12-2.

Christian Koss 3B- 2 for 4.  BA= .318.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .237.
Tyler Fitzgerald 2B- 1 for 4, 2B.  BA= .294.

Mason Black and Keaton Winn go hammered in an historically hitter-friendly environment.

AA:  Somerset Patriots squeaked past the Richmond Flying Squirrels 1-0.

Joe Whitman LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 6 K's, 6/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.93.

Squirrels managed just 2 hits.

A+:  Everett Aquasox defeated the Eugene Emeralds 7-4.

Maui Ahuna SS- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .343.
Dayson Croes DH- 1 for 3, BB, SB(2).  BA= .305.
Zander Darby 2B- 1 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .250.
Quinn McDaniel LF- 1 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .226.
Greg Farone LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K's.  BA= 5.24.

Zander Darby gets the promotion to A+ and homers.  Second scoreless appearance in row for Farone albeit with too many walks.

A:  San Jose Giants crushed the Stockton Ports 13-3.

Jean Carlos Sio SS- 4 for 5, 2B, SB(15).  BA= .308.
Nate Furman 2B- 2 for 2, 2B.  BA= 1.000.
Jose Ramos 2B- 1 for 3, HR(2), SB(14).  BA= .218.
Jeremiah Jenkins 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(2).  BA= .221.
Robert Hipwell DH- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .241.
Ryan Slater RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.77.
Evan Gray RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 3.82.
Cade Vernon RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.64.

Who is Nate Furman, you ask?  He was traded to the Giants in the Alex Cobb deal with the Guardians.  He was on the 60-day IL at the time of the trade and did not appear in any games for AA Richmond.  He started this season on Richmond's 60-day IL and is in a rehab assignment.  He is 24 yo so still a prospect.  I would like to see Jean Carlos Sio, who has quietly had a really good season, get a preview at a higher level before this season is over.

DSL:  Giants Orange topped Tigers 1 4-3(7 innings).

Fernando Pena 1B(18 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .275.
Kendry Castro RHP(18 yo)- 4 IP, 3 H 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.88.

DSL:  Nationals pounded Giants Black 12-6.

Josuar Gonzalez SS(17 yo)- 1 for 5, 3B.  BA= .250.
Yohendry Sanchez C- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .291.

Game Wrap 7/29/2025: Pirates 3 Giants 1

Lack of hitting and mental mistakes were the culprits in the Giants 5'th loss in a row, at home no less.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 0 for 2, 2 BB, SB(6).  BA= .268.  The problem with this line is it does not show the baserunning blunder in which Heliot was the lead runner when the infield fly rule was invoked.  The ball dropped and he was wandering around somewhere near where the shortstop plays.  He got thrown out trying to get back to 2B with several feet to spare.  Not sure what he was thinking there or maybe he wasn't thinking!

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 3, HR(16), BB.  BA= .238.  Adames' HR was the Giants lone run of the game.  It looks more like he is going to end up with close to his preseason ZIPS projections.

Justin Verlander RHP- 5 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 4.53.  Verlander looked sharp again and turned in his second consecutive start of 1 run allowed in 5 IP although this one was much cleaner.

Tyler Rogers RHP- 1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.80.  Yes, there was the obligatory bad groundball BABIP luck here but the killer was a grounder to the right side that pulled Devers off the bag trying to field but ended up fielded by Casey Schmitt requiring Rogers to cover first, which he did.  However, Schmitt first looked at 2B and Rogers gave up on the play so didn't see the ball coming to first and did not attempt a catch.  Looking at replays I am not sure the throw was in time to get the out but if Rogers saw the ball coming and stretched I think he might have gotten the runner by a step.  That would have been out #2. The next batter, Joey Bart of course, singled on a groundball, of course, so the possible missed out probably would not have made a difference in the final outcome.  Still.......

As mentioned, this was the Giants 5'th loss in a row.  They are now at .500 for the first time since March and sinking fast.  I read that Buster is still evaluating whether to be aggressive at the deadline.  He's running out of time and based on tonight he might want to fold his cards on this season.  Maybe even try to sell a pending free agent or two.

The Giants try to salvage a game out of the series and the homestand tomorrow afternoon with Logan Webb RHP trying to get his game back on track against someone named Mike Burrows RHP who comes in with a 4.15 ERA.

Down on the Farm: 7/28/2025

Full season leagues had their standard Monday off.

Rookie ACL:  Angels outscored the Giants 14-9(Game 2 of ACL Championship Series).

Jhonny Level SS(18 yo)- SS- 2 for 4, 3B, BB, SB.
Oliver Tejada RF(18 yo)- 1 for 5, HR.
Ramon Peralta 3B(21 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B.
Jose Astudillo LF(21 yo)- 2 for 5.
Jesus Alexander 1B(19 yo)- 1 for 4, 2B, BB.
Rayner Arias DH(19 yo)- 1 for 5, 2B.
Andy Polanco CF(20 yo)- 1 for 3, BB, SB.
Fernando Vasqeuz(23 yo)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.

Angels win ACL championship so the season is over.  We all should be very excited for Jhonny Level who I have read the Giants see as a special player.  Hopefully we will see him in the San Jose Giants boxscores within a few days.  Jose Astudillo also had an outstanding season but he is a little older.  Andy Polanco had a good season and has tremendous size for a CF.  Most important for Rayner Arias to stay healthy and get regular AB's.  He had an earlier promotion to San Jose but struggled there.  I expect to see Level in San Jose lineups this season but not sure about any others.  Draft picks will be coming online soon.

DSL:  White Sox whitewashed Giants Black 2-0(7 innings).

Yohendry Sanchez C(18 yo)- 2 for 3.  BA= .290.
Ricardo Crespo DH(18 yo)- 2 for 2, BB.  BA= .302.
Leandro Rodriguez LHP(19 yo)- 5 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.93.

Yohendry Sanchez got a higher bonus last year than Jhonny Level so keep an eye on him.  He didn't play much last season but has a pretty good stat line this year.

DSL:  Cubs Red defeated Giants Orange 6-1(6 innings).

Miguel Caraballo C(16 yo)- 0 for 1, BB, HBP, 2 SB(7).  BA= .245.

Game Wrap 7/28/2025: Pirates 6 Giants 5

The Dawn of the Whisenhunt Era got off to a rocky start but he settled down to last 5 innings and leave with the game tied only to see the Giants lose it on a 2-run home run by Andrew McCutchen in the 7'th inning.  A 9'th inning rally fell a run short.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 5, 2B, 2 R.  BA= .269.  Ramos is batting .296 over his last 7 games.  He also made a nice running catch on a drive hit over his head in LF.

Willy Adames SS- 3 for 5, 2B, R, 2 RBI.  BA= .237.  Adames is showing more control as a hitter.  He adjusted his approach to go the other way on at least two of the hits and which kept the line moving.

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB(7), RBI.  BA= .253.  Lee also seems to have adjusted his game since the All-Star break going opposite field more frequently.  He is batting .321 over his last 7 games and .309 over his last 15.

Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 4, R.  BA= .209.  YtY batted one spot ahead of Bailey and went 0 for 4, BB.  Right now, Bailey is a better hitter as YtY is in one of his nighmarish slumps.

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 4, 3B, RBI.  BA= .243.  Chapman went the opposite way for his double as former Giants farmhand Alex Canario dived for a sinking liner and it skipped past him to the wall.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K's, 6/3 GO/AO.  ERA= 7.20.  Whisenhunt hung a first-pitch changeup to Nick Gonzalez in the first inning.  He then got punished for a couple of walks in the second inning and fell behind 4-1.  It looked like a short first start but to his credit he pulled it together and pitched scoreless ball over the next 3 innings and left with the game tied 4-4.

Carson Seymour RHP- 3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.00.  Seymour looked good except for one awful hanging slider the Cutch in the 7'th and paid the price.

Justin Verlander RHP tries for his second win of the season and tries to be the stopper of the losing streak against Bailey Falter LHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.82.

I think it was during the pregame show that Kruk and Kuip mentioned an article that showed up on sfgiants.com entitled "Devers First Base Growing Pains On Display vs Mets.".   Kuip, in particular, felt it was unfair since everybody knows Devers is learning the position on the fly.  I would add that almost every also knows that Devers is quite sensitive about having to learn a new position in the middle of the season.  I am all for journalistic independence but when you are writing for the Giants own website, I think you need to be a little more sensitive to how a headline like that could be viewed by the player as a hit piece and how it could impact the player's attitude and relationship to the team and their willingness to make personal sacrifices for the team going forward.

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats blasted the Las Vegas Aviators 13-6.

Christian Koss SS- 3 for 5.  Ba= .278.

Trent Harris RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.75.

Good to see Birdsong go 4 innings and appear to have some semblance of command of his pitches.

AA:  Portland Sea Dogs vs Richmond Flying Squirrels cancelled due to rain.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds squeaked past the Vancouver Canadians 1-0.

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(43).  BA= .251.

A:  Inland Empire 66'ers blanked the San Jose Giants 4-0.

Charlie McDaniel LHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.59.

Giants managed just 3 hits and 5 baserunners in the game.

Rookie ACL:  Angels defeated the Giants 6-3(Game 1 of  best-of-three championship series).

Jhonny Level SS- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(1).
Jose Astudillo LF- 1 for 4, 2B.
Argenis Cayama RHP- 3 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 2 K's, 5/0 GO/AO.

Samir Chires RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Jhonny Level is the star of this team.  Hope we get to see him play for the SJ Giants in August when they come down to Lake Elsinore.

Game Wrap 7/27/2025: Mets 5 Giants 3

Matt Chapman's two home runs were not enough to carry a struggling lineup and, in my opinion, a less than well-managed bullpen game by Bob Melvin.  Key Lines:

Willy Adames SS- 2 for 5, R.  BA= .233.  One of Adames' singles came with 2 outs and ahead of Chapman's second HR.  He also made a tremendous throw from deep in the hole to rob a hitter of an infield hit.

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 5, 2 HR(16), 2 R, 3 RBI.  BA= .243.  Chapman was pretty much the offense for a struggling lineup.  Chapman is batting .370 with 4 HR over his last 7 games.

Matt Gage LHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  Wow!  Matt Gage went on a long journey and came back a lights-out lefty reliever.  Gage was the opener and looked sensational against three really good hitters and he threw just 10 pitches.  Now I know the top 3 hitters were L, S, L and the next 3 batters were R, L, R but if you know you are likely to be scrambling for innings later in the game why not try to get another inning out of a hot, well-rested pitcher?

Spencer Bivens RHP- 3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's, 5/0 GO/AO.  ERA= 4.58.  I guess the plan for Bivens this season is to pitch him until his arm falls off.  Bivens gave 3 nice innings of work. I couldn't believe it when he came out for the 5'th inning(his 4'th inning).  If there is one pitcher who BoMel has overused it's Bivens Bivens predictably gave up B2B doubles to open the 5'th inning and BoMel not only didn't get any more outs out of him but he gave up a run in the process.  On the live broadcast interview from the dugout, BoMel said the plan was to get 60 pitches out of Bivens.  He started the inning at 53.  Maybe if he had let Gage try to eat some outs in the first inning he wouldn't have felt like he had to squeeze those last 7 pitches out of Bivens?

Randy Rodriguez RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.20.  Can't fault BoMel here.  Rodriguez has been solid all season.  Just had an off appearance.

Tristan Beck RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.91.  The plan was for Beck to pitch just one inning?  Another head scratcher.

Sean Hjelle RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 7.80.  I've been a huge advocate for Sean Hjelle but even I have seen enough of him.  He might be dealing with some off-field issues that are distracting him too.  Next?!

The Giants announced that Carson Whisenhunt LHP is getting called up to make his first MLB start tomorrow night facing the Pirates and Mitch Keller RHP who has some buzz as a possible trade deadline target for multiple teams.

Down on the Farm: 7/26/2025

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats got the best of the Las Vegas Aviators 5-4.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 0 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .225.

AA:  Portland Sea Dogs downed the Richmond Flying Squirrels 5-1.

A:  Inland Empire 66'ers crushed the San Jose Giants 8-1.

Tyler Switalski LHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.45.

Rookie ACL:  Giants beat the Rangers 4-1(ACL Semifinals).

Santiago Camacho C(18 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B.
Rayner Arias DH(19 yo)- 1 for 2, SF, HBP.
Jose Astudillo LF(21 yo)- 2 for 4.
Keyner Martinez RHP(20 yo)- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.
Melvin Pineda RHP(20 yo)- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.
Mauricio Estrella RHP(21 yo)- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.
Fernando Vasquez RHP(23 yo)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.

I've read the Giants are quite high on Keyner Martinez.  Championship game today vs Angels.

DSL:  Giants Black topped Giants Orange 5-4(8 innings).

Dilan Fernandez RHP(20 yo)- 3.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.73.

Game Wrap 7/26/2025: Mets 2 Giants 1

The Giants got much better pitching from Robbie Ray and the bullpen but that meant they only lost 2-1 instead of 8-1 and the lineup continued to sputter.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 3 for 4, 2B, RBI.  BA= .254.  Lee hit a double off the wall in Triples Alley that would have been a HR in 29 all 29 other ballparks.  He was left stranded.  His RBI, and the only one of the night for the Giants, came on a force out.

Robbie Ray LHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, ERA= 2.93.  Ray went into the 6'th inning with a 1-0 lead but got roughed up and left the game one out short of a Quality Start.

Bullpen game tomorrow trying to avoid a sweep with Matt Gage LHP opening.  Kodai Senga RHP goes for the Mets sporting an ERA of 1.79.

Down on the Farm: 7/25/2025

AAA:  Las Vegas Aviators strafed the Sacramento River Cats 7-4.

Grant McCray CF- 1 for 4, HR(14).  BA= .261.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .233.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.89.
Keaton Winn RHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.93.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.67.

Bryce Eldridge hits his third HR in 4 games.  Kind of an odd usage of Kai-Wei Teng given that he's been the best SP in Sacramento for the last month and the Giants starting pitcher situation looks dire.

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Portland Sea Dogs 3-2.

Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .264.
Victor Bericoto DH- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .226.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .198.
Jack Choate LHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.59.
Marques Johnson RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.32.
Tyler Myrick RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.76.
James Tibb III LF(Sea Dogs)- 0 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .206.

James Tibbs III is off to a slow start in AA where the Red Sox assigned him immediately after the trade.  His line of .246/.379/.478 in A+ looks good in a vacuum but I always worry about guys who show extreme three true outcomes tendencies at lower levels.  At worst, though, it's a head start on where he should be assigned at the start of next season.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds outlasted the Vancouver Canadians 6-5(10 innings).

Maui Ahuna SS- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .348.
Drew Cavanaugh C- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .375.
Guillermo Williamson DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .218.
Josh Bostick RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.18.

Relatively small samples but Maui Ahuna seems to be finally fully healthy and finding traction on his career.

A:  Inland Empire 66'ers defeated the San Jose Giants 4-1.

Sam Huff C- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
Jose Ramos LF- 2 for 4, SB(13).  BA= .218.
Jeremiah Jenkins 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .226.
Darien Smith RHP- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.55.

Rookie ACL:  ACL regular season is over.  Giants finished with the best record in the league.  Playoff semifinals are today with the Giants vs Rangers and Rockies vs Angels.  Championship game is Sunday.

DSL:  Giants Orange beat the White Sox 5-1(7 innings).

Anthony Marquez SS(18 yo)- 2 for 3.  BA= .283.
Carlos Concepcion RF(19 yo)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .270.
Elkyns Villareal RHP(18 yo)- 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.21.
Randry De Leon RHP(20 yo)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.50.

DSL:  Arizona Black outscored Giants Black 10-9.

Josuar Gonzalez DH(17 yo)- 1 for 4, BB, SB(22).  BA= .248.
Yosneiker Rivas 3B(19 yo)- 3 for 5, SB(6).  BA= .325.
Yohendry Sanchez C(18 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .279.
Dennys Riera 1B(20 yo)- 2 for 5.  BA- .258.
Yeison Oviedo 2B(17 yo)- 2 for 4.  BA= .276.
Brayan Narvaez RHP(20 yo)- 4.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.14.
Jose De La Rosa RHP(17 yo)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.30.

Game Wrap 7/25/2025: Mets 8 Giants 1

How many times over the last 3-4 seasons have the Giants come home after ending a road trip with an encouraging win and faceplanted in their first game back at home?  It happened again yesterday as Logan Webb had his worst start of the season and the Giants lineup sputtered after scoring a run in the first inning.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .270.  Ramos led off the Giants first inning with a groundball single, went to 3B on Rafael Devers 1B(.263) double and scored on a ground out.  The Giants had 7 other hits and a walk in the game but couldn't sequence them into more runs.

Logan Webb RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA=. 3.38.  Webb hit a rough patch with 3 non-quality starts in a row.  He's come out of these in the past but has also had to take some time off for arm soreness at times.

Tristan Beck RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.14.  The Giants need a starter for Sunday.  This appearance means it probably won't be Beck. Kai-Wei Teng RHP pitched in yesterday's AAA game so it probably won't be him.  Looking more like a bullpen game.

Robby Ray LHP takes the mound tonight facing David Peterson LHP who comes in with an ERA of 2.90.

The Giants starting pitching starts to look dire as they announced that Landen Roupp RHP was placed on the IL due to elbow inflammation.  That does not sound like just one or two missed starts.

Zander Darby LF- 3 for 6, 2B, SB(10).  BA= .295.
Lisbel Diaz LF- 2 for 6.  BA= .267.
Juan Perez C- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .164.
Ryan Reckley RF- 1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB.  BA= .152.
Luis De La Torre LHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's, 6/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 0.00.
Cole Hillier RHP- 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's, Save(3).  ERA= 2.89.

I attended this game.  De La Torre looked sharp.  There is no stadium radar gun in San Bernardino so hard to judge velocities.  He appeared to be throwing slightly less hard than the 66'ers SP but with a lot better command.  He seemed to have a sinking fastball or cutter which got a lot of groundballs but reached back and elevated a 4-seamer when needed.  Slider command was spotty.

Zander Darby was the best looking hitter with excellent bat control.  In his first AB he turned on a middle-in pitch and lined it to the RF wall for a double.  Later he hit two perfectly placed groundballs through the hole on the left side for singles including one with runners on 2'nd and 3'rd which drove in both runners.  I thought to myself the Giants need to do more of that.

Good to see Ortiz back after I saw him pull a bad hammy early in the season.  Elijah Pleasants sure looks like a pitcher, tall, rawboned with long, whippy arms.  He needs to command his pitches.  Cole Hillier is compact with a live fastball and sharp slider.

Rookie ACL:  Giants tamed the D'Backs 7-3.

Christian Koss 2B(rehab)- 2 for 3.  BA= .667.
Ramon Peralta 2B(21 yo)- 2 for 2, HR(5).  BA= .261.
Dario Reynoso 3B(20 yo)- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .298.
Andy Polanco CF(20 yo)- 2 for 3, 3 SB(22).  BA= .264.
Alexander Fuentes RHP(20 yo)- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.62.

DSL:  Giants Black blanked Mets Orange 4-0.

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats edged out the Las Vegas Aviators 3-2.

Tyler Fitzgerald 2B- 2 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .273.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .231.
Mason Black RHP- 6 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.45.

Bryce Eldridge's second HR in as many games was a walk-off after the Aviators tied the game in the top of the 9'th inning.

AA:  Portland Sea Dogs outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-4(10 innings):

Carter Howell RF-2 for 4, HBP.  BA= .207.
Sabin Ceballos 3B- 3 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .207.
Turner Hill CF- 1 for 3, BB, Sac.  BA= .250.
Will Bednar RHP- 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 6.39.

Two 3-hit games in a row for Ceballos who has had a tough season after a hot spring training.  Will Bednar bounces back from getting roughed up his last appearance.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds defeated the Vancouver Canadians 4-1.

Drew Cavanaugh C- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .397.
Jonah Cox CF- 1 for 3, BB, Sac, SB(39).  BA= .250.

Ben Peterson RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 1.74.

This is more like what we hoped to see from Farone after his promotion from A San Jose.

A:  San Jose Giants outscored the Inland Empire 66'ers 9-6.

Jean Carlos Sio SS- 4 for 6, 2B, 3B, HR(4).  BA= .299.

Evan Gray RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(3).  ERA= 4.04.

It looks to me like Jean Carlos Sio hit for the cycle.

All 3 of the Giants complex affiliates were idle.

Game Wrap 7/23/2025: Giants 9 Braves 3

Justin Verlander shook off a 39-pitch first inning to complete 5 innings of scoreless ball and Rafael Devers had a breakout game to give Verlander his first Win as a Giant.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 5, 2B, R.  BA= .267.  Ramos also made a diving catch in shallow L-CF to take away a hit and even a potential double.

Rafael Devers DH- 3 for 5, 2 HR(19), 2 R, 4 RBI.  BA= .264.  Breakout game for Devers.  The first home run as all wrists as he was way out in front but kept his hands back long enough to hook it with a wrist flip.  TV broadcast said it was the second lowest pitch hit for a HR in MLB this season.  Those are some strong wrists!  Second HR came one pitch after he was knocked down by a heat-seeker at the ear.  He took a long time to take inventory after that knockdown and a few very deep breaths then crushed the next pitch out of the park.  This was Devers third consecutive multi-hit game and first multi-homer game since the trade.  He suddenly looks a lot happier and more confident and that's a very good thing for the Giants.

Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 2, HR(14), BB, HBP, 2 R, 2 RBI.  BA= .243.   The HR was crushed to R-CF.  Chapman got hit on the hand with a pitch later in the game and Brett Wisely PH for his final AB.  Hopefully just a precaution and due to the Giants large lead.

Casey Schmitt 2B/3B(.245), Dominic Smith 1B(.250), Patrick Bailey C(.208) and Luis Matos CF(.173) each had a hit.  Bailey's hit was a double.  Smith, Bailey and Matos had RBI's and Smith and Matos scored a run each.

Justin Verlander RHP- 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 5 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.70.  Verlander walked the bases loaded in the first inning and things looked so bad there was activity in the Giants bullpen.  He got out of it but threw 39 pitches and looked unlikely to pitch the required 5 innings for a Win.  He settled down and got through a full 5 allowing just 3 more baserunners and 59 more pitches.  By the time he officially exited the game the Giants had a 6-0 lead and Verlander had his first Win of the season and first as a Giant.  Hopefully he will have a few more before he's done.

Ryan Walker RHP(4.35), Joey Lucchesi LHP(1.93) and Tyler Rogers RHP(1.51) pitched scoreless frames out of the bullpen.  Sean Hjelle RHP(7.71) gave up a 3-spot in the 7'th inning but completed the inning.

The Giants find themselves in a much better place than 2 days ago and will have a happy flight and a day off at home tomorrow.  Logan Webb RHP starts the first game of the homestand and weekend series against the Mets Friday Night facing Clay Holmes RHP who comes in with a 3.48 ERA but 4.58 over his last 7 starts.

Down on the Farm: 7/22/2025

AAA:  Sacramento River Cats shut out the Las Vegas Aviators 8-0.

Tyler Fitzgerald 2B- 2 for 5.  BA= .258.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(4).  BA= .230.
Daniel Johnson LF- 2 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .288.
Antonio Jimenez LHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.62.
Joel Peguero RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.90.
Keaton Winn RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.73.

I read a note that this was Kai-Wei Teng's turn to start.  It was a bullpen game but that's an interesting opening line for Jimenez.  After giving up 6 runs in 2 IP in his first two appearances of the season, he has a subsequent 2.55 ERA. Peguero, the triple-digit man from spring training, has put up a 1.13 ERA in 8 IP in July.

AA:  Portland Sea Dogs outlasted the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2(11 innings):

Sabin Ceballos 3B- 3 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .198.
John Bertrand LHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.10.
Cameron Cotter RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.85.
Dylan Hecht RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.

Re. Bertrand, Landen Roupp is proving pitchability can still win at the MLB level.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds buried the Vancouver Canadians 12-3.

Maui Ahuna SS- 2 for 4, 2 BB.  BA= .500.
Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 6, HR(7).  BA= .249.

Zane Zielinski 2B- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .227.
Cole Foster 3B- 3 for 5, 2B.  BA= .156.
Cesar Perdomo LHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.40.
Ryan Vanderhei RHP- 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.47.

Maui Ahuna moves up to A+.  Drew Cavanaugh can hit.

A:  San Jose Giants blasted the Inland Empire 66'ers 10-3.

Jean Carlos Sio LF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .292.
Walker Martin 3B- 2 for 4, HR(11), BB.  BA= .244.
Robert Hipwell DH- 1 for 3, 2B, BB, HBP.  BA= .238.
Zander Darby 2B- 1 for 5, HR(5).  BA= .291.
Jeremiah Jenkins 1B- 2 for 4, BB.  BA= .208.
Hunter Dryden RHP- 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.20.
Ricardo Estrada LHP- 3.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.93.
Cade Vernon RHP- 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.70.

Walker Martin is batting .316 in July.  Since his BA hit a nadir of .197 on June 5, he's batted .303 over 122 AB since.

Rookie ACL:  Giants stomped the Cubs 12-4(7 innings).

Jhonny Level DH(18 yo)- 2 for 3, HR(9), BB.  BA= .293.
Jose Ortiz RF(20 yo)- 1 for 3, 2 SB(2).  BA= .231.
Rayner Arias LF(19 yo)- 1 for 2, HR(3), 2 BB.  BA= .240.
Ramon Peralta 3B(21 yo)- 2 for 4, 3B, HR(4).  BA= .252.
Jesus Alexander 1B(19 yo)- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .248.

DSL:  Giants Black defeated Blue Jays Blue 7-3.

Josuar Gonzalez SS(17 yo)- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .256.

Game Wrap 7/22/2025: Giants 9 Braves 0

The Giants worked out their frustrations in a blowout win.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 3, BB, SF, R, RBI.  BA= .266.  Pretty good game for Heliot except he blew through a stop sign from 3B coach Matt Williams but scored the run.  I didn't see it, but I read a comment that he got a lecture in the dugout.

Rafael Devers 1B- 2 for 5, 2B, BB, 2 R, RBI.  BA= .259.  Hey!  Devers played 1B!  Hopefully this means his back feels better.  This was his second 2-hit game in a row.  I thought he looked the happiest I've seen him since the trade and with more positive body language.

Willy Adames SS- 1 for 2, 3 BB, 2 R, RBI.  BA= .231.  Adames resurgence continues.

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 5, 3B.  BA= .241.  Chapman's third 2-hit game in a row and he's to be hitting the ball hard.  Hopefully that means his wrist injury is fully healed and in his rearview mirror.

Wilmer Flores DH- 1 for 3, HR(12), SF, R, 4 RBI.  BA= .245.  It shouldn't make any difference but somehow I feel like Devers and Flores will both be happier and do better with Devers at 1B and Wilmer at DH.

Casey Schmitt 2B- 1 for 4, HR(5), R, RBI.  BA= .246.  Schmitt's home run capped the 4-run 2'nd inning that got the Giants and Landen Roupp off to a great start.

Patrick Bailey 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, R.  BA= .208.  He got thrown out trying for a second double on another great throw by Ronald Acuna Jr.  It looked like Bailey ditched the "torpedo" bat.  He's batting .333 over his last 7 games and .245 over his last 30.  If he can sustain a .245 BA the rest of the way, it will be a big boost to the lineup.

Landen Roupp RHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.11.  Another strong start for Roupp.

Joey Lucchesi LHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.08.   Lucchesi has been impressive since his call up.

Carson Seymour RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.00.  Hayden Birdsong RHP and Tristan Beck RHP were optioned to AAA Sacramento and Seymour and Sean Hjelle RHP were recalled.  Birdsong obviously needs to work on his game and Beck pitched 5.2 innings in 3 days and the Giants needed an available arm in the bullpen. I am sure Beck will be back soon. Seymour looked really good with a 98 MPH sinking fastball and a sharp slider.  He is an imposing presence on the mound.

Giants have an early game tomorrow at 9:15 AM PDT.  Justin Verlander RHP tries for a series win and his first Win of the season facing Spencer Strider RHP who has a 2.53 ERA over his last 7 starts.

Down on the Farm: 7/21/2025

Full Season Leagues had their standard Monday off.

Rookie ACL:  Giants outscored the Rangers 9-8.

Jose Ortiz RF(20 yo)- 2 for 3, SF.  BA= .217.
Dario Reynoso 2B(20 yo)- 2 for 4, Sac, SB(18).  BA= .299.
Santiago Camacho C(18 yo)- 3 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .241.
Ramon Peralta 3B(21 yo)- 1 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .245.
Angel Guzman 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .220.
Jose T Perez RHP(21 yo)- 4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.57.

Jose Ortiz was off to a hot start with A San Jose when he went down with what looked like a bad hammy in a game I attended in early May.  He is just now rehabbing from that injury.  Gotta think Dario Reynoso has raised his stock significantly with his performance this season.

DSL:  Giants Orange outlasted Pirates Gold 7-6(12 innings).

Yulian Barreto DH(17 yo)- 2 for 4, BB, SF.  BA= .336.
Carlos Martinez C(17 yo)- 2 for 4, 2B, SF, SB(1).  BA= .161.
Brandon Vasquez LF(18 yo)- 3 for 6, 2B, 2 SB(3).  BA= .273.
Randry De Leon RHP(20 yo)- 2 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.14.

Yulian Barreto played in the DSL All-Star Game and looks like we should see him in ACL lineups next year.

DSL:  Giants Black destroyed Pirates Black 12-3.

Luis Frias CF(20 yo)- 2 for 5, BB, SB(10).  BA= .301.
Josuar Gonzalez SS(17 yo)- 1 for 2, HR(2), 3 BB.  BA= .250.
Yohendry Sanchez C(18 yo)- 3 for 4, 2 2B, BB.  BA= .290.
Leandro Rodriguez LHP(19 yo)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.55.
Frainer Mejias RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 5.66.

Josuar Gonzalez hits his second career HR 3 days and 1 game after his first.  Yohendry Sanchez received the largest Giants bonus from the 2024 international signing period at $1.4 M.  He did not play much last DSL season but his bat has come alive this year.  We should see him in the ACL next year.

The Giants reportedly signed 17 of their 18 draft picks with 20'th round selection Elijah McNeal SS being the only one left out.  It seems unlikely they will sign him away from his commitment to UC Davis as they are within $10, 000 of having to pay penalties for going over their bonus limit.  Good for Elijah.  His scouting report says he is a good student.  He got a workout at Oracle Park, a draft selection to put on his CV and a scholarship to a great school.  If he's a good player he should be in a better draft and bonus position in 3 years.  If not, he's getting a great education.

The Giants were able to get underslot on most of their picks so they could sign 2 of the 3 high school players they drafted, Reid Worley RHP in round 9 and Luke Mensik RHP in round 17.  I figured they would most likely only sign Worley out of the high schoolers.

I watched a video by a group called On the Clock. In their opinion, 4'th round selection Lorenzo Meola SS is the best defensive shortstop in the draft.  They really liked the pick.  They mock drafted Gavin Kilen SS/2B to the Giants at #13 overall so they like that pick and think he was drafted at the appropriate level.  They also liked Cameron Maldonado OF in round 7, Ben Bybee RHP in round 8 and Damian Bravo OF in round 15.  One comment they made is the Giants drafted a lot of really wiry players.  They gave them a solid B for the draft and said they did well with the resources they had given they didn't have the 2'nd or 5'th round picks and had the 6'th lowest bonus pool.   I have seen other grades of C and C+.

Game Wrap 7/21/2025: Braves 9 Giants 5

The lineup handed Young Hayden Birdsong a lead in the top of the first inning but he failed to record an out in a disaster start.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 4, BB, R.  BA= .257.  You have to start from somewhere.  Maybe reaching base 3 times is it for Devers?

Willy Adames SS- 4 for 5, 2 2B, HR(15), 2 R, 2 RBI.  BA= .230.  Adames his hot.  He needs some of his teammates to get hot with him.

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 RBI.  BA= .238.  8 hits and 10 times on base in 15 PA's for Devers, Adames and Chapman, 3, 4 and 5 in the lineup, is encouraging.  Unfortunately, Mike Yastrzemski RF(.238) was the rally killer batting 6'th with an 0 for 5.

Wilmer Flores 1B- 2 for 4, 2B, R.  BA= .245.  Flores batted out of the 7-hole.

Hayden Birdsong RHP- 0.0 IP, 1 H, 5 R, 4 BB, 0 K, HBP.  ERA= 4.80.  Birdsong didn't get any help from the ump but a lot of his pitches were not at all close and I've listened to Kruk preach for 30 years that when you are wild, you're not going to get the calls you need on close pitches.  It's hard to see Birdsong making his next start after this disaster.  Some sort of reset seems almost mandatory.

Matt Gage LHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Gage received the red alert and came on in the first inning with 3 runs in, bases loaded and no outs.  He got 2 K's and seemed to be out of it but a groundball took a bad hop over Chapman's glove and 2 of his inherited runs scored.

Spencer Bivens RHP- 1.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 4.59.  Bivens should sue for pitcher abuse.  After a rough 1.1 IP yesterday he got through one inning today without giving up a run but he quite obviously ran out of gas in his second inning of work.  In BoMel's defense, having to cover all 9 innings with the bullpen was a tough situation.

Tristan Beck RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 5.68.  Anyone else thinks Beck has earned a look as a SP?

Landen Roupp RHP tries to get the Giants back on the winning track and extend his own string of strong starts tomorrow evening against Davis Daniel RHP who is making his 3'rd appearance and 2'nd start of the season.  He comes in with a 1.80 ERA in just 5 IP.

Down on the Farm: 7/20/2025

AAA:  Oklahoma City Comets edged out the Sacramento River Cats 5-4.

Marco Luciano DH- 1 for 2, 2 BB, 2 SB(8).  BA= .226.
Austin Barnes C- 2 for 3.  BA= .200.
Thomas Gavello 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, HR(3).  BA= .417.
Carson Whisenhunt LHP- 3.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 4.42.
Trent Harris RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 8.59.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 8.59.
Braxton Roxby RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.
Blake "My Season Start On August 1" Snell LHP(Comets)- 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.25.

Hey look!  Carson Whisenhunt came within 1 out of pitching as well as Blake Snell.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Harrisburg Senators 8-3.

Bo Davidson DH- 2 for 5, HR(1), SB(1).  BA= .250.
Scott Bandura LF- 1 for 3, BB.  BA= .500.
Adrian Sugastey C- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .222.
Turner Hill CF- 2 for 3, BB, SB(10).  BA= .248.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 1 for 4, HR(5).  BA= .194.
Helcris Olivarez LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.08.

Bo Davidson hits his first AA HR.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds blanked the Tri-Cities Dust Devils 4-0.

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .248.
Dayson Croes DH- 2 for 5, 2B.  BA= .307.
Charlie Szykowny 1B- 2 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .266.
Drew Cavanaugh C- 3 for 4, 2B.  BA= .345.
Jose Ramos 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .324.
Shane Rademacher RHP- 5.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.65.
Cameron Pferrer RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.55.
Matt Dunaway RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 2.00.

6 of the Ems 12 hits were doubles by 6 different hitters.  I am not sure how 12 hits, 4 walks with 6 doubles gets you just 4 runs but it was enough with the shutout pitching.

A:  Modesto Nuts topped the San Jose Giants 4-2.

Jean Carlos Sio LF- 2 for 5, SB(13).  BA= .290.
Lisbel Diaz CF- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .262.
Charlie McDaniel LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 2.66.
Ubert Mejias RHP- 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.80.

Jean Carlos Sio has quietly had a nice season. He's just 21 yo and I think has another season before he is eligible for the Rule 5 Draft.

DSL had their All-Star game.  AL outscored the NL 10-8.  Josuar Gonzalez(17 yo), Yulian Barreto(18 yo) and Alberto Laroche RHP(19 yo) represented Giants affiliates on the NL team.

Game Wrap 7/20/2025: Blue Jays 8 Giants 6

The Giants bats came to life in the series finale in Toronto but it was not enough to overcome a rough day for the pitching.  Key Lines:

Jung Hoo Lee CF- 2 for 5, 2B, R, RBI.  BA= .249.  After a rough June in which he hit just .143, Lee is batting .306 in July.

Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 5, 2B, RBI.  BA= .267.  Ramos went 5 for 12 in the series but had another rough day in the OF misplaying a liner by Bo Bichette that blew past him to the wall for a 2-run double in the third inning.

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 4, HR(13), 2 R, 2 RBI.  BA= .234.  An encouraging game for Chapman.  I was starting to worry that his wrist wasn't fully healed but today's line suggests he just needed to get his timing back after a long IL stint.

Andrew Knizner C- 2 for 2.  BA= .186.  Knizner is batting .316 over his last 7 games.

Robbie Ray LHP- 4.1 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.92.  Ray had a Quality Start against the Dodgers on 7/13 so this is probably just a blip.  Tough loss when he got some run support.

Spencer Bivens RHP- 1.1 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 4.18.  Are the wheels coming off for Bivens?  He's given up 7 R in 3.2 IP over his last 3 appearances.

Joey Lucchesi LHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 2.25.  Another solid outing for Lucchesi who has been surprisingly effective since his call up.   He has an history of starting.  Giants might need to press him into service.

Hayden Birdsong RHP who has had his struggles starts tomorrow evening against the Braves and Bryce Elder RHP who comes in with a 5.65 ERA.

Down on the Farm: 7/19/2025

AAA:  Oklahoma City Comets blasted the Sacramento River Cats 14-3.

Bryce Eldridge 1B- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .224.
Osleivis Basabe SS- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .261.
Keaton Winn RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.40.
Joel Peguero RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 6.33.

River Cats only had 3 hits in the game.

AA:  Richmond Flying Squirrels quieted the Harrisburg Senators 8-2(Game 1 of doubleheader, 7 innings).

Bo Davidson CF- 0 for 4.  BA= .000.
Victor Bericoto 1B- 2 for 4, HR(8).  BA= .221.
Turner Hill LF- 2 for 4.  BA= .239.
Scott Bandura DH- 3 for 4, HR(1).  BA= .750.
Sabin Ceballos 3B- 2 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .191.
Diego Velasquez 2B- 1 for 2, BB, HBP.  BA= .275.
Jack Choate LHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 3.70.
Dylan Hecht RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 0.00.

Scott Bandura's first AA game goes better than Bo Davidson's.

AA:  Harrisburg Senators defeated the Richmond Flying Squirrels 6-1(Game 2 of doubleheader, 7 innings).

Bo Davidson CF- 1 for 3.  BA= .143.
Diego Velasquez 2B- 1 for 2, Sac.  BA= .276.
Scott Bandura LF- 1 for 3.  BA= .571.
Victor Bericoto RF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .223.
Evan Gates RHP- 2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.12.
Will Bednar RHP- 1.1 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 6.91.
Michael Stryfeller RHP- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.35.

Bo Davidson gets his first AA hit.  Disappointing appearance for Will Bednar after a scoreless string.

A+:  Tri-Cities Dust Devils edged out the Eugene Emeralds 2-1.

Jonah Cox CF- 2 for 4, 2B, SB(38).  BA= .246.
Josh Bostick RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 4.15.
Austin Strickland RHP- 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.23.
Ben Peterson RHP- 1.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.08.

Josh Bostick has a 1.59 ERA in 22.2 IP over his last 4 starts.

A:  San Jose Giants cracked the Modesto Nuts 8-4.

Maui Ahuna SS- 2 for 3, 2B, 3B, HBP.  BA= .268.
Sam Huff C- 0 for 2, 2 BB.  BA= .000.
Lisbel Diaz CF- 1 for 3, HR(8), BB.  BA= .259.
Ryan Reckley RF- 2 for 4.  BA= .119.
Zander Darby 2B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .295.
Gerelmi Maldonado RHP- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 3.19.
Cole Hillier RHP- 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, Save(2).  BA= 3.05.

After a rough April, Gerelmi Maldonado has quietly put together a pretty good season with a 2.75 ERA in 32.2 IP since May 1.  In that span he has 38 K's, but 19 Walks.  Maui Ahuna is batting .294 in July so far.

Rookie ACL:  Giants beat the D'Backs 7-1.

Dario Reynoso 2B(20 yo)- 2 for 5, 2B, HR(10).  BA= .294.
Jose Astudillo LF(21 yo)- 3 for 4.  BA= .426.
Andy Polanco CF(20 yo)- 2 for 4, SB(19).  BA= .265.
Oliver Tejada DH(18 yo)- 1 for 2, BB, HBP, SB(6).  BA= .256.
Alexander Fuentes RHP(20 yo)- 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 2.97.
Jose Rengel LHP(19 yo)- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 7.71.
Keyner Martinez RHP(20 yo)- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 1.86.

Dario Reynoso's July BA dipped to .259 but with 5 of his 10 HR's in 64 PA's.

DSL was idle for their All-Star Game today.

Game Wrap 7/19/2025: Blue Jays 6 Giants 3

For awhile this game felt like a mirror image of last night's with the Giants making the most of their hits and the Blue Jays leaving runners on base, but in the end it again came down to a disaster inning being too much for a struggling lineup to overcome.  Key Lines:

Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 3, SF.  BA= .265.   Heliot's Sac Fly drove in Luis Matos with the Giants second run of the game and a brief 2-0 lead.

Willy Adames SS- 2 for 3, 2 HR(14).  BA= 224.  For awhile it looked like Willy Adames might win this one by himself but alas, he didn't get much help from his teammates and a pair of solo HR's just wasn't enough.  Still an encouraging game from a guy the Giants desperately need to be the team leader both on the field and the clubhouse.

Luis Matos RF- 1 for 3, 2B.  BA= .175.  Matos leadoff double in the 6'th after Adames HR in the 5'th looked like the Giants might be getting it in gear for a convincing win.  Alas, they burned two outs advancing him to 3B on a flyball and Heliot's Sac Fly. It was nice to get the run but the rally was over.  The Blue Jays 4-run rally in the bottom of the 6'th inning erased the lead and the optimism.

Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 11 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 9/3 GO/AO.  ERA= 3.08.   Webb had runners on base every inning but held the wolves at bay until the disaster 6'th when is luck ran out and 2 singles and 3 doubles erased the Giants 2-0 lead and effectively ended the game.

All-Star Robbie Ray LHP tries to stave off a sweep tomorrow facing Jose Berrios RHP who comes in with a 3.75 ERA.  Unfortunately the game is televised on Roku.
