Down on the Farm: 7/25/2025

AAA:  Las Vegas Aviators strafed the Sacramento River Cats 7-4.

Grant McCray CF- 1 for 4, HR(14).  BA= .261.
Bryce Eldridge 1B- 2 for 4, HR(6).  BA= .233.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 4 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 5.89.
Keaton Winn RHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 5.93.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 3.67.

Bryce Eldridge hits his third HR in 4 games.  Kind of an odd usage of Kai-Wei Teng given that he's been the best SP in Sacramento for the last month and the Giants starting pitcher situation looks dire.

AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels edged out the Portland Sea Dogs 3-2.

Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 3, BB.  BA= .264.
Victor Bericoto DH- 2 for 4, 3B.  BA= .226.
Aeverson Arteaga SS- 2 for 4, 2B.  BA= .198.
Jack Choate LHP- 4.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.59.
Marques Johnson RHP- 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 1.32.
Tyler Myrick RHP- 1.1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 3.76.
James Tibb III LF(Sea Dogs)- 0 for 3, 2 BB.  BA= .206.

James Tibbs III is off to a slow start in AA where the Red Sox assigned him immediately after the trade.  His line of .246/.379/.478 in A+ looks good in a vacuum but I always worry about guys who show extreme three true outcomes tendencies at lower levels.  At worst, though, it's a head start on where he should be assigned at the start of next season.

A+:  Eugene Emeralds outlasted the Vancouver Canadians 6-5(10 innings).

Maui Ahuna SS- 2 for 5, 2 2B.  BA= .348.
Drew Cavanaugh C- 0 for 1, 3 BB.  BA= .375.
Guillermo Williamson DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .218.
Josh Bostick RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 4.18.

Relatively small samples but Maui Ahuna seems to be finally fully healthy and finding traction on his career.

A:  Inland Empire 66'ers defeated the San Jose Giants 4-1.

Sam Huff C- 2 for 4.  BA= .333.
Jose Ramos LF- 2 for 4, SB(13).  BA= .218.
Jeremiah Jenkins 1B- 1 for 3, 2B, BB.  BA= .226.
Darien Smith RHP- 4.1 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 1.55.

Rookie ACL:  ACL regular season is over.  Giants finished with the best record in the league.  Playoff semifinals are today with the Giants vs Rangers and Rockies vs Angels.  Championship game is Sunday.

DSL:  Giants Orange beat the White Sox 5-1(7 innings).

Anthony Marquez SS(18 yo)- 2 for 3.  BA= .283.
Carlos Concepcion RF(19 yo)- 2 for 4, 2 2B.  BA= .270.
Elkyns Villareal RHP(18 yo)- 3 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 3.21.
Randry De Leon RHP(20 yo)- 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.50.

DSL:  Arizona Black outscored Giants Black 10-9.

Josuar Gonzalez DH(17 yo)- 1 for 4, BB, SB(22).  BA= .248.
Yosneiker Rivas 3B(19 yo)- 3 for 5, SB(6).  BA= .325.
Yohendry Sanchez C(18 yo)- 1 for 4, HR(1), BB.  BA= .279.
Dennys Riera 1B(20 yo)- 2 for 5.  BA- .258.
Yeison Oviedo 2B(17 yo)- 2 for 4.  BA= .276.
Brayan Narvaez RHP(20 yo)- 4.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 5 K's.  ERA= 2.14.
Jose De La Rosa RHP(17 yo)- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 2.30.

  1. For the record, Giants haven’t called up Whisenhunt or Teng and likely won’t call up Eldridge (unless they release Smith) because they have a massive 40 man roster people created by Farhan. The 40 man roster is filled with prospects/young minor leaguers who Farhan prematurely called up but who the Giants wouldn’t want to lose to another team through the waiver wire. They really have no pitchers they could take off of it at the moment because they badly need lefties (Gage, Lachessi), and Carson Ragsdale would be the most likely of the prospects to get taken off considering his age and ineffectiveness but I don’t think the Giants are ready to do that without given him a shot in the majors. For hitters, Daniel Johnson is the obvious first candidate to be taken off the 40 man roster. Jerar the next likely followed by Smith. Wisely they wouldn’t want to lose him just yet because another team for sure would swoop on him because of his versatility. The problem eases after the season when there are several free agents

  2. The Giants will need to make some difficult decisions in the next 5 days. With Webb faltering, Ray potentially close to his innings limit, JV barely holding on, Roupp possibly out for the year, and nobody else without massive question marks, the season is likely over without several drastic moves.

Every GM knows this so trading for 2-3 starters before the deadline will mean saying goodbye to some of our best prospects. With as many holes to fill as we have and the price to do business likely higher than it should be, is there a path to still make the playoffs without gutting the farm?

I think fans will understand that Buster did more in one season than FZ did in 6 and we are headed in the right direction. We have more to look forward to in 2026 than we did going into 2025 thanks to him. I would love to use the rest of the season to fully evaluate guys like Matos and Luciano and all our pitching prospects. The pitching prospects will be up regardless but would be nice to not throw them to the wolves in a playoff race. We will know more in the next 5 days but I just don’t see a way to continue to compete this season with out losing all these prospects you write about Doc.

    1. Are we so sure the team is in a better place than it was last season? It has a lot higher payroll, two additional players on long term contracts and a possible looming second half collapse to rival either of the last two seasons. And really, if the farm system is better stocked, the vast majority of players were acquired on FZ's watch.

    2. I'm not sure if its good to compare the 1st season of Posey to FZ's final season of 5 years I'll say whats good about Buster is he's come out and said he wants a team built on pitching, defense, timely hitting. He's not afraid to make a big trade and free agent signing. I like the Devers trade since that's the best way for the Giamts to acquire a star hitter. Tonights 9th inning double by Lee, which Pavs tweeted would be a homer in 29 out 30 parks is an example why power hitters won't sign with SF. Buster also said he wants to acquire contact hitters to supplement the core of Chapman, Adames, Devers.. FZ did some good things, but I never heard him say what kind of team he wanted to build. FZ couldn't make a big trade other then Kris Bryant. Good GMs like Brian Sabean and Al Rosen were not afraid to make trades. FZ signed a lot of players to 1 or 2 year contracts and let them go .he was risk averse. which is ok, but he had a hard time building a core group of players that fans can identify with. I'll say that I like that Posey wants the org to be scouting,/analytics driven. I've read reports that FZ wanted the org to be more analytics driven. We will see what Posey does at the deadline and what the final won/loss record is, regardless I want to see what kind of teams Buster can build for the next couple of years before determining if the Giants are better off. They do have good core pieces to build around

    3. LG, not saying you are wrong but we have yet to see Adames and Devers help the team score more runs and those contracts carry a whole lot of long term risk. While there is no long term risk in Verlander's contract, that signing hasn't exactly been a difference maker. It's OK to like the process. I do too. But the jury is still out on whether that translates to on-field success.

    4. If anything I feel like this team has more direction than it did with FZ and I feel more confident that Buster will make bold moves which he has. Does that translate into immediate success… I guess not but nothing FZ did either and he got 6 years! If the Giants still suck after 2027 I will start to question Buster but I am going to show more patience with him than I did with FZ.

Funny how a farm system can be a measurement for a GM’s success. FZ supporters would cry that he inherited one of the worst farms in baseball but then would give him credit for it improving over the years even though all the top prospects were drafted by Sabes. FZ’s ability to develop those prospects into major leaguers wasn’t good and we also saw most of his draft picks go down the prospect list instead of up each year.

We won’t be able to tell how Buster has done in the draft for another 2-3 years but one thing we can do is evaluate what he does with the prospects he inherited until then. Nothing stands out right now but I think he has handled 2B well with settling on Schmidt and I haven’t gotten dizzy this year from all the noname players going up and down!

Truth is, he has inherited a very average at best farm and already has imporved it with our second best overall prospect Josuar Gonzalez. He was aggressive in promoting Eldridge to AAA but not overly aggressive by bringing him up yet. The Davidson promotion was exciting to see as well and maybe it’s early to say this but I have more confidence that our prospects will develop into major leaguers under Buster than under FZ.

    5. I agree FZ needed to go due to lack of direction and just general rebellion in the organization to what is reported to be extremely poor communication skills. Nobody declared Buster's tenure a failure, but it also far from a proven success. I reacted to the comment, "....fans will understand that Buster did more in one season than FZ did in 6...." Uh, not how this team looks right now he didn't. I personally never said FZ inherited a bad farm system. In fact I noted many times that Ramos, Matos and Luciano were acquired while Bobby Evans was GM. I do agree over the last two years FZ promoted too many prospects too fast due to poor prior planning and created a logjam between AAA and MLB. On the other hand, Buster hasn't exactly cleared that logjam out or brought clarity as to who are keepers and who can be let go. Eldridge and Davidson were acquired under the FZ regime and undoubtedly would have been promoted in a similar fashion. Josuar Gonzalez is batting in the .240's in the DSL. So it's a mixed bag for both FZ and Buster. My main point is while I am in no way declaring Buster's tenure a bust, it's also way too early to declare it a success.

    6. "...two additional players on long term contracts..."
Since Posey generally gets credit for Chapman's extension, the two additional players may well be 3...

  3. 2 of the top teams in the 4 (?) DSL Divisions, Giants Black and Giants Orange, face off today.
Not to jump Doc's coverage, they actually played this morning (our time), matching scores along the way, and ended in an extra inning with identical records.
A lot of exciting youth down there including, of course, 17-yo Josuar De Jesus Gonzalez, and a half dozen with OPS in the upper .800's, it will be interesting to see who graduates.

  4. Devin Mann, 28 yo, signed by the Giants in the Spring, has had a roller coaster ride this year. He started in AA Richmond, moved up to AAA but scuffled for a while until he hit well in July (13-38, .342) before being sent back to Richmond.
