Spring Training Game Wrap 3/16/2026: Padres 3 Giants 1

Tyler Mahle had a sparkling start but was upstaged by Walker Buehler in a road loss to the Padres.  Key Lines:

Jared Oliva LF- 0 for 1, HBP, Sac, SB(12).  BA= .344.  Oliva is getting a long look.  He appears to have game-changing speed.

Jung Hoo Lee RF- 1 for 2, 2B, BB.  BA= .429.  Lee is back from the WBC.  Looking for a big season from him.

Buddy Kennedy 3B- 2 for 3, 2B.  BA= .346.  Tough to see a path to a roster spot for Kennedy despite a strong spring.

Jesus Rodriguez 2B/C- 2 for 4.  BA= .353.  This guy has one of the shortest, quickest swings I've ever seen.   No doubt he can hit.  Is there a path to a roster spot?

Tyler Mahle RHP- 4 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 6/1 GO/AO.  ERA= 0.00.  That is good pitching!  Mahle's main challenge this season is staying healthy.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 0.00.  I assume Walker goes into the season as the Closer.  Hopefully it's a bounce back year.

Walker Buehler RHP(Padres)- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 K's.  ERA= 3.09.  This is going to turn out to be a great pick up for the Padres on a minor league deal no less.  I just know it.  Buster!  How could you let this happen?

The Giants have today off.  They are on the road against the Dodgers on Wednesday, starters TBD.

  1. It is going to be sad to see some of these guys on the waiver wire this year. Tough competition.

  2. Fitzgerald (0-2, .194/.189/.389) got the Giants' only RBI.
    Team LOB: 10
    Team RISP: 0-13
A full line-up of failures to get an RBI:
    With RISP: Brennan 0-2, Eldridge 0-1, Lee 0-1, J. Rodríguez 0-1, Ahuna 0-1, Susac 0-2, Matos 0-2, Gilbert 0-1, Koss 0-1, Fitzgerald 0-1
Adames, Chapman, Devers, Ramos, Baily, Arraez, McCray, Bericoto, Harber, and a couple others did not play.
Kennedy was the only player with 2 hits but came out for a runner. His replacement, Ahuna , came up in the 8th with 2 on and popped out.
    OK, they don't count.

  3. i have gotten better at not assessing a prospect's prospects based on a game or two. that said, couldn't help but note note that Eldridge went 0-3, all K's. -es

  4. It remains to be seen whether the Giants can hit the top 20% of pitchers in the MLB. I sense that is what it will take to succeed in making the playoffs. Thanks for the info on Buehler. I thought I was the only one whispering "Buehler? Buehler?"

    1. "Buehler? Buehler?"
      Terrific!
1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
Do you have to be over 70 to appreciate it? 80?

    2. I'm 40 and LOVE Ferris Beuhler's Day Off.

It's an absolute gem of a film.

    3. I thought Ferris Buehler's Day Off was a ripoff of Risky Business which I thought was a better movie. I also think Buster Posey missed an opportunity by not taking more of a risk than a minor league deal on Walker Buehler.

    4. Pitchers are better than batters, but even the best lose games. Why? Because the baseball gods allow hits to get bunched , especially when the 1st batter of an inning gets on and the pitcher changes what he's doing to hold him, perhaps allowing another hit.
This is what Arráez is going to do: get on base. If he comes up with a runner on 1st and 2 outs, send the runner because the worst thing that can happen is Arráez leads off the next inning.
Who should follow Arráez? Contact hitters.
The Giants should keep Oliva on the team: put him in late in a tight game when someone gets on base to distract the pitcher, steal a base or 2, and get an advantage.
Oliva and Arráez are going to change the game for the Giants.

    5. I'll take 80's Teen movies for $500 Alex!

While Ferris was always meant to be a comedy (John Hughes at his height of powers), Risky Business was originally written as a much darker film. About how life relentlessly wears you down. Joel doesn't get into Princeton in the original screenplay. And the last scene of that screenplay had Joel and Lana sitting on a bench, and she looks up at him and says forlornly, "Why's it got to be so hard?"

It's interesting watching the film with this info, because you can see all the places where the story was dark and hopeless, and they injected comedy and hope. I think ultimately, Risky Business ended up being an amazing film. I originally saw in the theater back in the day. I got in free because my girlfriend worked there.

    6. And I've wanted Bueller since '15 draft because of the the movie. Just for the "Buehler?" schtick. He was regarded highly enough for the Giants to have taken him with their first pick. Hated that the Dodgers grabbed him. They said he fell in the draft because he'd already been TJed (and the fear of a more likely 2nd TJ...which ultimately did happen).

  5. Aaron Judge is a great asset, every team would be improved with him.
He's among the players one would pick first with that option.
As good as he is, his best is not in clutch situations.
