"When the Giants Come to Town..." is my blog intended to chronicle my thoughts on San Francisco Giants baseball. My special interest is in prospects and the farm system, but of course, will comment on all aspects of the San Francisco Giants. I will also comment on baseball in general, particularly from a fantasy baseball perspective. I hope you will find the site informative, and invite you to join in the discussion.

Game Wrap 6/22/2025: Giants 9 Red Sox 5
The Giants scored 5 runs over the 7'th and 8'th innings to pull away in what was a see-saw battle. Key Lines:
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 5, HR(6), 2 Assists, 2 R, RBI. BA= .253. YtY's solo HR in the 5'th inning narrowed the Red Sox lead to 5-4. He also threw out two runners for his 6'th and 7'th assists on the season which puts him in a tie for the MLB lead for RF's.
Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 4, 2B, 4 RBI. BA= .285. Ramos muffed a relatively easy catch in the first inning to give the Red Sox an unearned run. He more than made up for it with a 2-run single in the 3'rd inning and a 2-run opposite-field double in the 7'th. His fielding adventures aside, years of hard work have turned Ramos into the type of MLB hitter you want up there in big situations.
Willy Adames SS- 2 for 4, HR(9), 2 R, RBI. BA= .208. Adames singled and scored a run in the Gaints 4-run 7'th inning then homered in the 8'th to add an insurance run and make the 9'th inning a non-save situation.
Casey Schmitt 3B- 4 for 4, 2B, HR(4), 3 R, RBI. BA= .286. Speaking of hard work, Casey has been heating up since getting regular playing time with Chapman's injury. Since his BA dipped to .180 on June 8 he went 13 for 37(.351) coming into today's game. The 4 for 4 made it 17 for 41(.415). Although he's had hot streaks in the past, the quality of his AB's has improved remarkably with dramatically lower swings at pitches outside the zone. I could see him taking over at 2B once Chapman returns.
Tyler Fitzgerald 2B- 0 for 2, 2 Sac, RBI. BA= .230. Speaking of 2B, Fitzgerald's bat has gone ice cold but he executed a couple of sacrifice bunts. He advanced two runners in the third inning which contributed to a 2-run rally and the a perfect safety squeeze to score Willy Adames in the 7'th.
Robbie Ray LHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 7 K's. BA= .283. Ray seemed to recover well from the unearned run in the first inning but then gave up a 3-spot on a pair of home runs in the 5'th inning.
Spencer Bivens RHP gave up a solo HR in the 6'th inning. Erik Miller LHP, Tyler Rogers RHP and Randy Rodriguez RHP pitched scoreless frames as the Giants pulled away in the late innings ultimately making it a non-save situation.
The Giants get a rare day off at home to regroup before the Marlins come in for a 3-game series to close out the homestand. Justin Verlander RHP is expected back from paternity leave to start Tuesday against Cal Quantrill RHP.

AAA: Sacramento River Cats tamed the Salt Lake City Bees 9-3.
Game Wrap 6/21/2025: Giants 3 Red Sox 2
Home runs by Heliot Ramos and Rafael Devers supported Landen Roupp's excellent pitching and was enough to survive Camilo Doval's 9'th inning torture chamber. Key Lines:
Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 4, HR(13). BA= .282. I didn't think Heliot got all of this one but the ball seemed to get some extra carry. I did notice that Heliot's front shoulder stays closed through his swing, something Willy Adames might want to pay attention to.
Rafael Devers DH- 1 for 4, HR(16). BA= .267. Devers' first home run as a Giant came with a runner on base and gave the Giants a 3-0 lead, one they would need every bit of by the end of the game. The HR went to straightaway LF. Kruk commented that about that about 50 or 20% of Devers' career 2016 HR's went oppo field.
Landen Roupp RHP- 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.67. I had my doubts in the first couple of innings but Roupp settled down and had all his pitches working for a better than Quality Start. Roupp has a 2.50 ERA over his last 7 starts despite the disaster start in LA.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K, Save(12). ERA= 2.06. Doval opened up with a leadoff double then two singles for one run. Then a throwing error on a SB attempt let another run in and put a runner at 2B with one out. Doval got out of it with a couple of ground outs. Whew!
Randy Rodriguez RHP and Tyler Rogers RHP pitched scoreless 7'th and 8'th innings respectively.
Nice win after yesterday's stinker.
Robbie Ray LHP tries to close out a series win tomorrow afternoon against Lucas Giolito RHP.

AAA: Salt Lake City Bees swarmed over the Sacramento River Cats 6-0.
Game Wrap 6/20/2025: Red Sox 7 Giants 5
The Giants scored some runs but continued to miss out on opportunities and the pitching couldn't hold back a relentless Red Sox attack in a sloppy game. Oh! And the 19 MPH wind out to CF only seemed to blow when the Red Sox were up. Key Lines:
The Giants lineup drew 8 walks but managed just 7 hits, all singles. Heliot Ramos LF(.283) and Casey Schmitt 3B(.250) had 2 hits each.
Rafael Devers DH- 0 for 5. BA= .267. Devers had a couple of long outs, one the CF caught up against the L-CF wall but his 0 for 5 was the most glaring hole in the lineup. The Giants 3, 4 and 5 hitters went a combined 1 for 14. I don't know what Devers is chewing but I'm not sure I can watch that for the next 9 years.
Christian Koss 2B- 0 for 2, 2 GIDP, E. BA= .219. It's tough when you are only playing once a week but Koss had a rough night. Oddly enough, two of the Giants runs scored on his batted balls but both came on GIDP's with with bases loaded and no outs so he was not credited with RBI's. In one case YtY followed with in infield single to get the second run home but those were two missed opportunities to add on. Later in the game when Patrick Bailey drew a 2-out walk, Melvin did some maneuvering bringing the lefty hitter Daniel Johnson in to pinch-hit. When Red Sox Manager Joey Cora countered with a lefty pitcher, Melvin pulled Johnson back and sent up Tyler Fitzgerald who struck out swinging and did not come within shouting distance of making contact. Is there another Marco Scutaro out there somewhere? Christian's error led to an unearned that was ultimately not the difference in the game.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 4.1 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 3.25. Birdsong looked sharp for the first two innings then suddenly started to get hit hard in the third inning and it was all downhill from there.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 4.66. Hjelle got out of Birdsong's jam in the 5'th inning but gave up a solo bomb to Cedanne Rafaela in the 6'th. What's with giving up 2 home runs and 5 of the Red Sox 11 hits to the #8 and 9 hitters?
Joey Lucchesi LHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 13.50. So far it looks like Lucchesi has nothing. Apparently Melvin thought so too and came out with the quick hook.
Ryan Walker RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 4.20. Kruk and Kuip commented that this is the sharpest Walker looked in a long time.
Spencer Bivens RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 3.11. Bivens also looked sharp but too little his effort was too late as the lineup failed to mount a comeback.
Landen Roupp RHP tries to stop the bleeding today in an afternoon start facing Brayan Bello RHP who comes in with a 3.49 ERA.

Game Wrap 6/19/2025: Giants 2 Guardians 1
A pinch-hit, 2-run double by Wilmer Flores in the 7'th inning saved another scintillating pitching performance by Logan Webb from waste. Key Lines:
Wilmer Flores PH- 1 for 1, 2B, 2 RBI. BA= .256. This time bunting two runners over with no outs worked exactly like Melvin drew it up because he had Wilmer on the bench who PH for Christian Koss, who BTW had one of the Giants 4 other hits on the day. Wilmer got to two strikes but finally found a pitch he could handle and sent it down the 3B line into the corner to drive in the runners from 3'rd and 2'nd. That was the difference in the game.
Logan Webb RHP- 7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K's, 6/1 GO/AO. ERA= 2.49. This is the 8'th start for Webb in which he went at least 7 innings and allowed 2 runs or less. He has 4 other Quality Starts. He's on track for what could be his career season and he's already had some very good ones.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K, Save(11). ERA= 1.59. No torture today as Randy Rodriguez RHP and Doval shut it down over the final two innings.
Wilmer's heroics notwithstanding, this lineup looks completely lost. To my eye, they take hittable pitches, swing at unhittable ones, consistently foul off fat pitches. Whatever hitting disease it is, rather than Rafael Devers fixing it, it's spread to him! Not sure what the answer is. I will bring up Willy Adames again. I'm no hitting coach but it looks to me like his front shoulder flies open on every swing. I remember once upon a time the Giants had a young slugger names Matt Williams who had not completely performed up to his potential. They got a first base coach named Bobby Bonds who made a motion of tucking his chin into his front shoulder before every pitch when Williams was batting to remind him to keep his shoulder tucked. And it worked! Williams turned into an absolute monster at the plate.
The Boston Red Sox are coming to town for what should be an inneresting series. Hayden Birdsong RHP faces Hunter Dobbins RHP in the opener tomorrow evening.
Down on the Farm: 6/18/2025
AAA: Salt Lake City Bees stung the Sacramento River Cats 6-1.
Game Wrap 6/18/2025: Guardians 4 Giants 2
A mistake fastball over the heart of the plate from Justin Verlander on and 0-2 count in the fourth inning was the difference in this game as the Giants lineup could not overcome the resulting 4-0 lead. Key Lines:
Heliot Ramos LF- 1 for 4, HR(12). BA= .284. Ramos followed a 2-out single by Patrick Bailey with blast deep into the stands in LF. Up to that point, Guardians SP L. T. Allen LHP befuddled the Giants lineup with a mix of soft stuff. After Ramos' homer, the Giants appeared to be very much back in the game but failed to build on that change in momentum.
Justin Verlander RHP- 4.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, ER, 1 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.45. I don't think anyone expected Verlander to get deep into the game coming off the IL. Other than the one horrible pitch.
The Bullpen shut it down for 4.1 IP but the damage was done.
Logan Webb RHP tries to prevent a series sweep by the Guardians this afternoon against Gavin Williams RHP who comes in with an ERA of 3.89 but 2.89 over his last 7 starts.

AAA: Sacramento River Cats outscored the Salt Lake City Bees 12-10.
Game Wrap 6/17/2025: Guardians 3 Giants 2
The Dawn of the Devers Era saw it's protagonist deliver 2 hits including a RBI double and a Quality Start by Robbie Ray, but the final scene did not play out as hoped for. Key Lines:
Rafael Devers DH- 2 for 5, 2B, RBI. BA= .274. Devers smoked one up Triples Alley to drive in Willy Adames from first base for the Giants second run of the game in the third inning. That was the end of their scoring on another frustrating night for the lineup. The top 4 batters reached base 10 times in 20 PA's. Overall the team reached base 16 times yet produced just 2 runs. The underperformance was a combination of unfortunate sequencing, bad BABIP luck and base running blunders.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 3 for 4, 2B. BA= .257. YtY had 4 total bases out of the 6'th spot in the lineup yet did not figure into the scoring just to add to the general frustration of the night.
Robbie Ray LHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.68. Ray pitched the first two innings like he was going to pitch a perfect game but then got nicked for single runs in the 3'rd, 4'th and 6'th innings. The game-winning home run was off the bat of someone named Gabriel Arias with a career BA of .220.

Game Wrap 6/15/2025: Dodgers 5 Giants 4
The Giants and Dodgers played a game today and nobody cares. The game is almost certainly not what you checked in to read about. So a few minutes after game time I opened Gameday and was shocked to see that Sean Hjelle was pitching. I texted my friend questioning why Kyle Harrison LHP was a late scratch. He replied "big trade". I thought he was joking for a second but then it sunk in. Wow! What a block....ahem....Buster! OK, we'll get to the trade but let's get the Game Wrap out of the way first.
A bullpen game wasn't quite enough to hold back the Dodgers enough to take the weekend series. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 5, 3B, 2 RBI. BA= .265. Lee's 5'th triple of the season drove in two runs to cap a 3-run rally in the 4'th inning.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 3, BB, R. BA= .248. YtY stared the Giants 4'th inning rally with a 2-out single.
Christian Koss 2B/3B- 1 for 4, R, RBI. BA= .217. Christian Koss followed Logan Porter's walk with an RBI single to drive in YtY with the Giants first run. He then scored on Lee's triple.
Daniel Johnson PH- 1 for 1, HR(1), R, RBI. BA= .235. Johnson's PH HR in the 8'th closed the gap to 5-4. Alas, it was too little, too late.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 4.70. Not a terrible start considering the late notice(Harrison had already gone down to the bullpen to warm up) and the craziness of the trade. He got touched for a run in each of the first two innings then settled down to get through 3.2 IP and leave with the lead.
Joey Lucchesi LHP- 0.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 0 K. ERA= 27.00. Lucchesi was a late add to the roster, got roughed up and took the loss.
So, the Giants lose the series but it's way better than a sweep and the win Friday night sure still feels good. I am sure by the end of the season nobody will remember this game....at least for the game.
So....how about that trade?
Literally minutes before game time, the Buster Posey swung a blockBuster trade with the Red Sox for disgruntled slugger Rafael Devers 3B/DH. In return the Giants give up Kyle Harrison LHP who was scratched from the game he was supposed to start, Jordan Hicks RHP, James Tibbs III OF and Jose Bello RHP. Tibbs and Bello are minor leaguers but Tibbs was last year's first round draft pick so he's not a trivial part of the trade package.
There is a lot to unpack here. Rafael Devers is an elite hitter in MLB. Until this season he looked like the player the Red Sox would build their future around after they signed him to a 10-year/$315 M contract before the 2024 season. Then they went out and signed Alex Bregman to a free agent contract this offseason and asked Devers to move to first base. Devers felt like he was the top dawg on the team and had not done anything to lose his primary position and refused to play first base stating he did not feel comfortable there. Devers became the full time DH but was clearly still not happy and the Red Sox were not happy with him. Buster Posey sensed an opportunity and did not wait around. At worst, Devers will be what I have said all along is the Giants biggest need: A lefty hitting power bat who could play DH, 1B or RF. So I am fine if at least for the rest of this season Devers is the DH. Here is the profile on Devers:
Rafael Devers 3B/DH. DOB: 10/24/1996. B-L, T-R. 6' 0", 235 lbs.
2025: .271/.400/.494, 14 HR, 16.7 BB%, 23.0 K%, 330 PA.
Which is pretty close to being on pace for his career average season.
I think we are all pretty familiar with what the Giants gave up:
Kyle Harrison LHP. DOB: 8/12/2001. 6' 2", 209 lbs.
2025: 1-1, 4.56, 23.2 IP, 9.51 K/9, 3.42 BB/9. Promising young pitcher. Third round draft pick out of HS in 2020 but got late first round money in his bonus. Stuff can be electric but with inconsistent command. Unorthodox low-slot delivery.
Jordan Hicks RHP. DOB: 9/6/1996. 6' 2", 217 lbs.
2025: 1-5, 6.47, 7.95 K/9, 3.70 BB/9. Signed to be starter for a modest 4 yr/$44 M contract. Although he pitched well in a few starts, he seemed to wear down quickly and not have the stamina for the role. His reliance on a high-velocity sinker probably results in too much contact for today's game. The Giants are able to offload the remainder of his contract which is about $30 M and what role he's going to fill is someone else's problem.
James Tibbs III OF. DOB: 10/1/2002. B-L, T-R. 6' 0", 201 lbs.
2025(A+): .245/.377/.480, 12 HR, 16.3 BB%, 17.9 K%, 252 PA.
Tremendous plate discipline with power but with borderline BA. I always worry guys with that profile in the lower minors won't maintain an adequate BA at higher levels. If you ask me to pick one name as comp I would say Michael Conforto whose career is worthy of a first round draft pick but if that's his ceiling, it's probalby a risk worth taking for an established hitter like Devers.
Jose Bello RHP. DOB: 5/29/2005. 6' 1", 164 lbs.
2025(ACL): 1-0, 2.00, 18 IP, 14 K/9, 1.50 BB/9.
Fangraphs scouting report: "Advanced righty who commands a backend starter's mix. He's very young but isn't an overtly projectable, high-upside prospect. Instead he's more of a high-floored, backend starter type." In other words, he's probably not going to turn into Luis Castillo down the road.
So who wins this trade? Only time will tell but I agree with the McCovey Chronicles Bluesky feed: "My sadness and concerns notwithstanding, the team in the Giants position wins this trade going away 9 times out of 10." And that's even if Devers never takes the field on defense again. Look, young pitchers are young pitchers. Prospects are prospects. Most of even the most promising ones end up with less than average MLB careers. Devers is an established elite hitter who gives the Giants lineup exactly what it desperately needs, a legitimate lefthanded-hitting cleanup hitter whether it's at DH or if they find a position he can and will play. A great bold trade for Buster Posey and I love that he didn't wait around for the trade deadline to make his move.

Game Wrap 6/14/2025: Dodgers 11 Giants 5
Casey Schmitt hit his second grand slam home run in as many days albeit against a position player doing the mop-up pitcher impersonation. Unfortunately it was way too little too late to overcome 11 runs and a vintage Clayton Kershaw performance. Key Lines:
That's pretty much it. Jerar Encarnacion had two hits including a double off Kershaw and had another lineout against The Great One. Better AB's and more hard hits from Jerar most welcome.
You had to have a feeling about this game coming in. Coming off a huge win in a battle of pitching aces, Kershaw's aura, Kershaw pitching lefthanded, Landen Roupp overdue for a subpar start. And that's pretty much how it played out.

Game Wrap 6/12/2025: Rockies 8 Giants 7
Coors Field giveth and Coors Field taketh. The Giants lost a Coors Field Special with a 3-run meltdown in the 9'th inning to lose out on what a few innings earlier looked like a sure sweep of the series. Key Lines:
Wilmer Flores DH- 2 for 5, 2B, R. BA= .259. Wilmer was one of just two Giants with multiple hits or an XBH. The lineup strung together 5 singles while putting up a 4-spot in the second inning.
Dominic Smith 1B- 3 for 5, HR(1), BB, 3 R, 3 RBI. BA= .320. Smith must have read what steveVA said about him yesterday and said, "we'll fix THAT!". Huge game for and yes, we'll take a few more of those against LA this weekend. His 3-run HR in the 5'th inning gave the Giants a 7-2 lead which in any other park is an almost sure win but it's nothing in Coors Field.
Hayden Birdsong RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 2.79. A Quality Start for Birdsong who got to 104 pitches. Considering the environment a big league start.
Sean Hjelle RHP- 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 4.50. Hjelle got the first batter on a fly out to CF but then went soft GB single, walk, double to Thairo Estrada. That was enough for Bob Melvin who brought in Erik Miller for the last two outs. I got to thinking, even though Hjelle lives on ground ball outs, he shouldn't be that affected by Coors Field. Standing at 6' 11", on a mound with an upright, over-the-top delivery he's basically spiking the ball into the strike zone more than depending on sinking action which is more dependent on air resistance and gravity.
Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 4.56. A dominant, clean 8'th inning for Walker.
Randy Rodriguez RHP- 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.90. OK, putting two runners on by walks is not good pitching but Rodriguez should have been out of the inning with a Save were it not for a throwing error by Casey Schmitt. And yes, Matt Chapman sometimes makes throwing errors too. Rough day for Randy Rodriguez and for Casey Schmitt.
The Giants were fortunate to get wins in the first two games of the series and a series win, so hard to complain too loudly over a Coors Field special.
They move on to Los Angeles to take on the Hated Ones with Logan Webb RHP facing Yoshinobu Yamamoto RHP in game 1 in a battle of aces. And it's still OK to hate the Dodgers but take it easy on Los Angeles. We're traumatized down here right now and baseball might not be the #1 thing on our minds.

Down on the Farm: 6/11/2025
AAA: Tacoma Rainiers crushed the Sacramento River Cats 10-0.
Game Wrap 6/11/2025: Giants 10 Rockies 7
For the second game in a row, the Giants overcame a 3-run deficit with a 4-run rally but this time it was in the 8'th inning and they kept it going with 3 more add-on runs in the 9'th which made Camilo Doval's Torture Chamber a little easier to get through. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 3, 2 BB, 3 R. BA= .275. Lee tripled for the second game in a row, added 2 walks and scored 3 runs. That's pretty much how you draw it up for a leadoff hitter. Triples are always fun but watching Lee run one out is special.
Willy Adames SS- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(7), SF, 3 R, 3 RBI. BA= .203. Big game for Adames who has now homered two games in a row. Hopefully between the two days off and the friendly confines of Coors Field are the reset he needed and we'll see the extended hot streak we know he's capable of.
Heliot Ramos LF- 2 for 4, 2B, BB, 2 R. BA= .295. Heliot just keeps it going. The top three batters in the lineup reached base 9 times in 15 PA's plus the productive out by Adames.
Casey Schmitt 3B- 2 for 4, BB, R, 2 RBI. BA= .224. Another good night at the plate for Casey plus a very MLB worthy play at 3B to prevent a hit. I highly recommend looking up the video.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 2 for 5, 2B, 3 RBI. BA= .239. Another good night at the plate for YtY who seems to have his mojo back after a long, brutal slump.
Robbie Ray LHP- 4 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K's. ERA= 2.55. Coors Field may be therapeutic for hitters but it can ruin pitchers. Ray had a tough night that wasn't helped by a brutal 2-run fielding error by Jerar Encarnacion at first base who whiffed on an easy throw from Tyler Fitzgerald 2B.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K. ERA= 1.69. Non-Save situaton for Doval who was warmed up by the time the Giants extended their lead to 4 runs. Doval's velocity, command and body language were all way down and by the time he got the last out, the tying run was on base and Randy Rodriguez was heating up in the bullpen.
With the Win, the Giants remain in second place in the NL West 0.5 games out of the lead.

Game Wrap 6/10/2025: Wilmers 6 Rockies 5
This game had disaster written all over it for the Giants. They were facing a struggling rookie lefthander which is usually enough to sink them right there, but add in Coors Field and what sounds like a serious injury to their best position player and it looked ominous. Things were not looking any better going to the 9'th inning trailing 5-2, then things took a weird turn, but in a good way. Casey Schmitt led off with a home run to make it 5-3. Two walks, a force-out, a wild pitch and another walk loaded the bases with one out. Heliot Ramos got a run in with a Sac Fly and Dave Fleming announced that it's all up to Wilmer Flores. I texted my friend and said, "it's alway up to Wilmer!" When it got down to 2-strikes, as always with Wilmer, you had a feeling it was too soon to count him out. When he beat out a swinging bunt to tie the game I burst out laughing even though nobody else was watching with me. And how fitting that YtY lined a single to R to drive in the winning run? We all survived another inning in Doval's Torture Chamber and turned off the TV happy. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 1 for 5, 3B, 2 R. BA= .274. Lee led off the game with a triple and scored on Willy Adames' sac fly. The Giants would manage just one more run until the 9'th inning.
Willy Adames SS- 1 for 3, HR(6), BB, SF, 2 R, 2 RBI. BA= .194. Just when we hoped Adames would shed some of the pressure he's putting on himself, his infield partner, Matt Chapman, goes on the IL. Adames did have a good game after a 2-day reset.
Wilmer Flores DH- 2 for 4, HBP, RBI. BA= .255. How many ways has Wilmer found to win games? In honor of His Clutchness, for one day I am renaming the Giants in his honor.
Mike Yastrzemski PH/RF- 1 for 2, RBI. BA= .235. Good to see YtY with another game-winning hit.
Casey Schmitt 3B- 2 for 4, HR(1), R, RBI. BA= .204. With Chapman apparently out for awhile, Schmitt is going to get his big chance to prove he's an MLB hitter. He's off to a good start.
Kyle Harrison LHP- 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 4.56. After 54 pitches in two innings, it didn't look like Young Kyle would last more than 4 innings. He got through 5 and kept it close enough to give his team a chance to win.
Spencer Bivens RHP- 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 3.38. Bivens was terrific for 2 innings then got touched for 2 runs and had to be bailed out by Erik Miller LHP. As things stood at that point, Kyle Harrison was on the hook for the loss.
Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K, Save(10). ERA= 1.45. Doval had his torture chamber in action as he gave up a leadoff hit, erased that with a GIDP but then put runners first and third with a walk and bloop single before getting Forever Giant Thairo Estrada to fly out to Jung Hoo Lee for the final out.
The Win is the Wilmers 6'th in a row, all by one run, and puts the them 0.5 games out of first place.
Robbie Ray LHP tries to keep the magic going tomorrow evening facing Kyle Freeland LHP.
As mentioned above, Matt Chapman was placed on the IL with what was initially described as hand inflammation but was updated to a ligament sprain and bone bruise suffered while sliding into a base. Let's just say that sounds like potentially more than a 10-14 day stay on the IL. He is scheduled to see a specialist in Los Angeles.

Game Wrap 6/8/2025: Giants 4 Braves 3
Mike Yastrzemski drove in three of the Giants 4 runs while Landen Roupp pitched juuust well enough to record a Quality Start and get it to the bullpen to hang on for the Win. Key Lines:
Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 2, 2B, BB, SB(7), 2 R. BA= .243. Chapman scored both times he got on base. Don't underestimate the steal of 3B which enabled him to score on YtY's sac fly.
Mike Yastrzemski RF- 1 for 2, 2B, SF, R, 3 RBI. BA= .232. YtY has been mired in a brutal slump. The double was his first hit in 7 games. He is batting .071 over his last 7, .091 over his last 15 and .188 over his last 30. Hopefully this is the beginning of a hot streak. The Giants need his overall skill and veteran savvy but the bat was starting to become too much of a liability.
Landen Roupp RHP- 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 2 K's, 9/7 GO/AO. ERA= 3.29. Roupp pitched to contact. I'll guess that his GO/AO reflects that he was getting outs from both his 4-seam FB(AO) and from his curve and changeup(GO). Roupp has 4 Quality Starts out of his last 5 and has a 1.88 ERA over his last 7 starts. I think we are past having to worry about getting a competitive start on Roupp days.
Ryan Walker RHP(4.74), Randy Rodriguez RHP(0.61) and Camilo Doval RHP(1.50) each pitched a scoreless frame with 2 K's. Doval recorded his 9'th Save.
Giants sweep the series and record their 5'th win in a row. Shows how quickly fortunes can turn around in MLB and by such small margins. All 5 wins have been by a one run margin.
The Giants have a travel day tomorrow before starting a 3-game series against the Rockies in Colorado then on to face the Hated Ones in LA next weekend to complete a 6-game road trip.
Kyle Harrison LHP is the scheduled starter Tuesday evening against Carson Palmquist LHP a 2022 third round draft pick who comes in with a 8.50 ERA.

AAA: Sugarland Space Cowboys shut out the Sacramento River Cats 3-0.
Game Wrap 6/7/2025: Giants 3 Braves 2
The Giants were down to their last strike in another dismal hitting performance when Matt Chapman swung at a hanging curveball from former Giant Pierce Johnson and took it over the LF wall for a 2-out, 2-run, walk-off home run, the Giants second walk-off win in a row and 8'th of the season which leads MLB. Key Lines:
Wilmer Flores DH- 1 for 4, HR(11), R, RBI. BA= .254. Wilmer went deep in the fourth inning to give Logan Webb a short-lived 1-0 lead.
Matt Chapman 3B- 1 for 4, HR(12), R, 2 RBI. BA= .241. Heliot Ramos LF set it up with a one-out groundball single. Wilmer Flores popped out. Chapman got a pitch to hit and that was the ballgame.
Logan Webb RHP- 6 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 10 K's, 5/1 GO/AO. ERA= 2.58. Webb had 9 K's through 4 innings when he seemed to lose a little life on his pitches. Michael Harris II who Kruk reported had ownage on Webb homered in the fourth. BTW, I've learned to pay attention when Krukow says an opposing hitter has ownage. Three ground ball singles and a force out, plated another run for the Braves in the 6'th inning which looked like the winning run until Chapman's blast.
Erik Miller LHP, Sean Hjelle RHP and Tyler Rogers RHP worked a scoreless inning each to give Chapman his chance.
Landen Roupp RHP goes for the sweeeeep tomorrow afternoon against Spencer Strider RHP.
