Derek Curiel OF, College(LSU). DOB: 5/24/2005. B-L, T-L. 6' 2", 175 lbs.
2025: .345/.470/.519, 7 HR, 3 SB, 16.4 BB%, 17.3 K%, 323 PA.
At one point there was talk of Curiel being a first round pick out of high school but his stock fell after a disappointing senior season. He opted to play college ball at LSU and had an impressive freshman season as an ultra high contact leadoff hitter. Played mostly LF and will try to further raise his stock by moving to CF as his primary position as a draft-eligible sophomore. Current gap power will have to generate more home runs if he has to play corner OF in the pros.
Just curious, Doc, in your estimation, roughly how many HRs should a corner outfielder hit, or, for corners OFers with a high SLG because of many extra base hits rather than HRs, how good does that need to be?
ReplyDeleteExtremely rough estimate but I look for a minimum of 20 HR's per season out of a corner OF. That's not to say they can't do other things well to make up for fewer HR's but in general I look for at least 20.
DeleteFor 20 or more HRs, Ramos covers that (along with his mystery defense), but no one else has since Pence who did before he didn't, but it's been a Giant dry well for a long time (capitalize G in Giant or not).
DeleteYtY did have two 20 HR seasons early.
Considering that they mostly don't get 20 HRs out of 1B either (before Devers but he can't play 1st and DH at the same time, Belt did hit 20 or more in 2021, only), is it all about their park (they do hit more HRs on the road than at home, some years significantly more)?
The park suppresses home runs by approximately 20%. Since they play half their games there, you might expect Giants hitters to have about 10% fewer home runs than they would if they played their home games in a neutral park.
