Game Wrap 8/10/2025: Nationals 8 Giants 0

Justin Verlander got pummeled and the Giants lineup was shut down by Mackenzie Gore and the Nationals bullpen in a lopsided loss that was not nearly as close as the score appears.  Key Lines:

The Giants lineup managed just 3 hits with 1 walk and 15 K's.  Nothing more to see here except Willy Adames looks to me like his front shoulder is flying open again.  He is batting just .148 over his last 7 games and his season BA is back down to .229.

Justin Verlander RHP- 5 IP, 11 H, 5 R, 1 BB, 6 K's.  ERA= 4.53.  Don't ask me to explain the good K/BB but when opposing batters are hitting one rocket after another, it's not bad BABIP luck.  This disaster start comes after 3 consecutive good 5-inning starts in which he gave up 1 run or less.  Nationals had a total of 17 hits in the game, most of them hard hit.

It doesn't get any easier as the Padres come to town with Logan Webb RHP facing TBD tomorrow evening.

  1. I stopped watching this game from the 5th inning, why watch when it felt like the team gave up. Being out hit 17 to 3 with 15ks is embarrassing. Losing 10 out of the last 11 home games is mind boggling.. The players need to look at themselves in the mirror as to whats causing them to play bad baseball especially at home. I think i read that Yaz said after he got traded the players need to play with a chip on their shoulder.. I'm not blaming Buster, BoMel, or the coaching staff for their poor play especially at home, its up to the players to look at themselves in the mirror and start playing with more intensity on the field.

  2. Giants need to move on from Verlander by the end of August. He’s played his role as a veteran clubhouse influence. He’s 1-9 in 20 starts and averaging 4.2 innings per game. It’s time to give one of the 6 young guys on the 40 man roster spot a shot to see if they could be contributors heading into next season. Verlander won’t be either is next season, playoffs are looking unlikely and even if we snuck into the wild card we aren’t getting far and he’s not going to be one of the dudes pitching. Only reason why he’s still on the team is because Posey and the players respect him. But he’s wasting a valuable roster spot at the moment. There’s 6 young pitchers who should be getting valuable reps over him

    1. Who are these young pitchers you speak of? Teng and Whiz are already in the rotation. Seymour and Beck have not exactly forced their way in. Birdsong is back in AAA still throwing pitches to the backstop. Unless they can find another veteran pitchers who can eat those 4.2 innings per start off someone's scrapheap, might has well keep sending Verlander out there since they have to pay him anyway.

    2. As noted in Down on the Farm, Roupp threw 3 innings, so he, presumptively, will be back. Will he replace Whiz or Teng? Or Verlander?
Half thought you might have done the Game Wrap with NTSH...

    3. Roupp is going to be back soon so he’s going to take a spot from either Whiz or Teng, so their hold on a rotation spot seems very temporary unless they get rid of Verlander or someone else goes down with an injury. There’s Birdsong, Blake Tidwell who has had two great starts with us and has been a strikeout machine in his minor league career with lots of potential, Mason Black who seems to have back end rotation potential, Carson Seymour who hasn’t gotten a shot at the rotation yet, and I’d even take Trevor McDonald over Verlander although McDonald is getting rocked in AAA and easily would be at the bottom of the list of the guys mentioned. All those guys are on the 40 man roster and would be worth a look over Verlander considering we aren’t going anywhere and old man Verlander isn’t going to be with us next year.

    4. I get giving young players a chance but throwing young players into the breech and seeing if they can stop the flood is a big reason why Buster Posey is now the POBO and FZ is not. Even in a white flag surrender situation I think they need 3 veteran SP's with a more measured approach to promoting and auditioning prospects

  3. Quintessential Giant faceplant AT HOME against one of the worst teams in baseball that was playing some pretty bad ball with the "top" guys leading the way (except Devers on Saturday). GORE was on huis game and Lord was Lord but Giants hitters have to do so much better. GILBERT was also basically a guaranteed out. Looks way overmatched. Speaking of that, it jut looks to me like Bailey has no real plan up there at the plate even if he occasionally runs into one. Perhaps this is where a hitting coach could help?

As for Verlander, the only purpose he serves is as a innings eater until Roupp is ready. You might as well just throw Teng (with an opener), Whiz and Roupp when all are healthy (and hell, maybe even Tidwell get a shot) and keep Verlander as insurance or possible waivers. Speaking of Verlander, he still has the arm strength and durability and can fire his FB up to 97 mph, but his execution is way off and makes way too many mistakes..Pitchimg more like kid than a savy vet.

  4. would be easy to go negative but i counted to 1,000 and will just say, this roster should be thankful they play in San Francisco because if they got shellacked at home by these sorry teams and it was, say, Philadelphia boy it would be Situation Ugly!

p.s. a thought: who on the Giants have met or exceeded expectations?

  5. As poorly as the Giants have done recently, the rest of the league (not counting LA) hasn't exactly been tearing things up. SF is still just four games out of the wild card. If they can manage to gain ground against SD in these next two series, there might still be hope (especially if Roupp returns to the rotation).
