Game Wrap 7/30/2025: Pirates 2 Giants 1(10 innings)

An extra-inning loss marked a new low point and Buster Posey ran up the white flag on the season trading Tyler Rogers RHP in a clear "sell" signal.  Key Lines:

Dominic Smith 1B- 2 for 4.  BA= .265.  Smith drove in Heliot Ramos LF from 2B with a 4'th inning single to give the Giants a short-lived 1-0 lead.  He had the only multi-hit game out of the Giants total of 6 hits, all singles.

Logan Webb RHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 11 K's.  ERA= 3.31.  This was Webb's best start out of his last 4 but still fell an out short of a Quality Start due to walks and a high pitch count.

Camilo Doval RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K's.  ERA= 3.09.  Giants beat writers say Doval is officially on the trading block.  If this was a showcase it didn't hurt his value.

Ryan Walker RHP- 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.  ERA= 4.12.  Walker had a chance to get out of it with a comebacker GIDP but got the ball to 2B too late.  The out was recorded at 1B but the runner from 3B scored the winning run.

The Giants half of the 10'th inning was just as frustrating.  Jung Hoo Lee CF was the designated runner.  Casey Schmitt 2B singled on a flyball to LF but Lee couldn't advance.  Mike Yastrzemski RF successfully bunted the runners to 3'rd and 2'nd, but Patrick Bailey C and Heliot Ramos struck out to leave them stranded.

So.......this loss not only completes a losing sweep at home to one of the worst teams in the league, but a losing sweep of the entire 6 game homestand.  It also marked their 12'th loss in 14 games in what has to be one of the worst 2-week spans in team history.

Tomorrow is a travel day then they start a 6-game road trip against these same teams.  Brutal!  Just brutal!

After weeks of most analysts assuming Buster Posey would be aggressive at the trade deadline to get the team back on track and make a run for it, he instead folded his cards and traded away Tyler Rogers to the Mets in a deal that was first reported by Alex Pavlovic just as the game got started.  At the same time, Alex also reported that Camilo Doval RHP is also available for trade.  The Giants get 3 players in return from the Mets including a decent MLB reliever which is also interesting.  Let''s break it down:

Jose Butto RHP.  DOB:  3/19/1998.  6' 1", 202 lbs.  Pre-arbitration- eligible 2027.

2025:  3-2, 3.64, 47 IP, 7.85 K/9, 4.21 BB/9, 1.62 GB/FB, 1 Save.

Butto features a 95 MPH sinker with a slider and changeup.  A strong GB tendency makes up for a less than ideal K/BB.  He can go more than one inning and started 7 games in both 2023 and 2024.  He won't be as reliable in late innings as Rogers but he does give Melvin additional options including possibly stretching him out to be a starter or a bulk inning guy in a bullpen game.

Blade Tidwell RHP.  DOB:  6/8/2001.  6' 4", 207 lbs.  On the 40-man roster but has 3 options.

2025(AAA):  6-4, 4.10, 79 IP, 9.91 K/9, 3.65 BB/9.
2025 (MLB):  1-1, 9.00, 15 IP, 6.00 K/9, 6.00 BB/9.

Mets 2'nd round draft pick in 2022 out of Univ. of Tennessee.  Struggled after a promotion to AAA last season but with improved numbers this year.  96 MPH 4-seam FB, 95 MPH 2-seam, Slider, Changeup.  Four MLB appearances which indicate he is not ready for The Show at this time.

Drew Gilbert OF.  DOB:  9/27/2000.  B-L, T-L.  5' 9", 195 lbs.  Not on 40-man roster.  Rule 5 eligible Dec. 2025.

2025(AAA):  .246/.349/.435, 14 HR, 3 SB, 11.2 BB%, 15.9 K%.

First round draft pick #28 overall by Astros in 2022 also from Tennessee.  Traded to Mets in 2023 for Justin Verlander.  Contact, contact contact is the watchword for what type of prospect bats Buster is looking for.  Gilbert joins the logjam of AAA level OF prospects but the 3 options buys time to further develop and evaluate him.

Overall a pretty impressive haul for a non-closer reliever who will be a free agent at the end of the season although none jump out as a future impact players.

Oh, and the Giants DFA'd Sean Hjelle RHP to make room for Tidwell in the 40-man roster.

  1. I hope Yaz and Wilmer aren't on the roster by Friday. If the return is good, flip Doval.

    1. Agree. What drove me crazy about FZ was he was never fish or fowl at the trade deadline. He was kind of a seller but not a complete seller. Now that he's announced he's selling I hope he moves everybody who is not going to be on the team next year and uses the last two months to audition "the kids."

  2. Stick a fork in the Giants for the season. One thing is certain. Even though I loved him as a player, Pat Burrell HAS to go. The sooner, the better. This failed season is 100% on the bats. He should've turned them around by now. I'm seeing actual regression, if anything, over the course of the season. Sad.

    1. I don't know if it's Burrell's fault but the Giants lineup has consistently underperformed this season. Usually when that happens the batting coach gets the blame even if they have little or nothing to do with the problem.

    2. Don't believe Burrell has caused the hitting slump but someone has to pay the price because you can' fire the players.

  3. Gilbert joins a half dozen OFers in Sacramento: is McCray a potential loser here? Or Meckler, Matos, Luciano, Encarnacion, Johnson, Bishop?
    Hmm, Gilbert makes 8!

    1. It's quite a crowd! I just don't see any reasonable hope for Bishop to find traction on his career at this point. Time is rapidly running out for Luciano. I would put Meckler in a similar boat although Buster might have some interest in his contact skills. Unless they want to hand RF over to Encarnacion as an audition for next year, his time his window is just about closed too(too bad, but ill-timed injuries have derailed many a career). It's just that if the audition is for next year's RF I would rather see what Matos or McCray can do over Encarnacion. All this is just me, of course.

    2. Luciano has shown some pop — 19 HRs — albeit not a lot of contact, still "just" 23 yo.

    3. But Luciano is running out of time to improve contact with the Giants because of roster rules.

  4. Let the carnage begin. LOL. Good to see Posey is listening on Doval. Being generous...he's not consistent enough to be a closer. Would be nice to see another GM dazzled enough by his truly electric stuff to overpay.

And if we're purging...I dunno, does Ramos have surplus value? Somebody's got to play LF...but if we're waving the white flag, oooohkay. I could take Ramos' defense for the bat. But after he ran through Matty's stop sign and then looked right through the coach trying to talk to him in the dugout...I think I see what he's all about. (And that was before his latest penchant for running into outs on the base paths) At this point I'd be on board with watching McCray and Matos struggle for August and September.

Anyone else tradable for any value at this point? Yaz maybe? I guess the right offer on Ray, as it seems optimistic to think they'll likely turn things around in '26. Can't see anyone giving up any more than an extreme lottery player for Verlander.

  5. Reports circulating that Verlander is being offered by Buster!

    1. Only makes sense. I would think Verlander would welcome a trade to a contender, especially one that can give him run support, at this point.

  6. Hopefully 4 to 6 players follow Rogers out the door----Verlander,, Doval, Yaz, Flores,, Smith, at the least..and there's not single player on the team i wouldn't deal for the right haul. A huge change is needed...I also worry about the future with the adequate Chapman at 3B for good, Eldridge the future 1B and leaving Devers, what, purely a DH? Not sure this is ideal..and only 1 of the 3 can be traded...hmmmmm

  7. Tyler was my favorite player to watch, but I'll be rooting hard for him in October. Gonna be interesting to see if this is the start of a complete teardown / rebuild in the off season.

  8. I still Don’t see why people would want to trade Robbie Ray. Best pitcher They have. This keeps coming up please explain why you would want to do that.
Drew Gilbert has been a huge disappointment for the Mets. May never be a major leaguer.
Heliot IMHO has burned bridges this year. So many fielding and running mistakes. Hard to keep track with all of his mental mistakes.
This is becoming “mental “ for me to keep watching the Giants team. But I will. Keep the faith.

    1. The thinking on Ray is because he is good and because he is under contract for next season too he might just bring the best player(s) in return. For me it depends on the quality of the return.

    2. Agreed, they may need to keep him since they may need his innings to finish out the season. Their SP depth is questionable.

  9. The AL is fairly wide open with, perhaps 10 teams contesting a playoff spot.
In the NL, with the Giants and perhaps the Cardinals dropping out, there is but a single team — Cincinnati — on the outside still looking in.
Other than the Yankees — 4 games out of first — the AL division winners are relatively secure but the WC is wide open.
The NL is different without a secure division with the Padres hanging on as the Hated Ones unable to run away.
There are still up to 17 potential buyers, but other than Duval are there any Giants that might be coveted? We SF diehards like "our guys" but does anyone else? Ray could draw interest but he's the #1/#2 SP for next year. Verlander is better than his record but he's barely a #3 here, now. Rodriguez should be untouchable but what if he's REALLY wanted?
As for batters without stifling contracts, Ramos is about all the Giants could offer and he's quite unpopular these days with the base because of his "warts" defensively and running the bases, and the Giants have too many OFers in Sacramento, so a really great offer — if such is forthcoming — might be considered. YtY, Flores, Smith, Johnson, et al are not even useful to SF — why would anyone wan them?
Unless the Earth Moves, we really can't expect much — that's why Buster has hoisted the white flag.

  10. while it's a normal response to rain down criticism on the manager (and coaches) when a team is losing and taking on water, i and maybe others were on Melvin's case even when the Giants were winning. i thought he was a ho hum hire, coming off one season with the Pod People that had a stacked team but managed to fritter away the entire campaign. maybe management wanted luke warm water after the fire and ice that Kapler brought to the organization, i dunno. was disappointed when i learned he was extended through 2026. it was a moment when i questioned Buster's thought process on the move. -es

    1. Melvin does have a definite recent history of managing under-performing teams.

  11. Camilo Doval-Im a little torn as to whether I want to see him traded. Late inning relievers that have been traded are getting back good returns, but who would take over as Giants closer? Randy Rodriguez sounds like the logical choice, but I read it took his arm 3 days to recover after pitching back to back games the other day.. please not Ryan Walker!

    1. Hi LG, I love Doval too. Ryan Walker has great ball movement. The problem is keeping the placement of his pitches proper. He has been doing well lately. But with his throwing motion and the huge lateral breaks he gets, he almost has to throw it at the batter’s body if it is a right handed batter. If he can accomplish that continuously, he would be like a larger Sergio Romo was for us! Both very tough to hit against and achieve solid contact.

  12. From Grok 4 @1:51pm: “ Very Close to a Deal?: The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal (1:45 PM PDT) reports the Giants are “on the verge” of a trade with the Pirates for Mitch Keller (29, 3.53 ERA, signed through 2028), with Camilo Doval as the centerpiece and Isiah Kiner-Falefa “likely” included to address 2B. ESPN’s Jeff Passan (1:50 PM) says it’s “down to the wire,” with Pittsburgh asking for Doval + Brett Wisely + one more piece (likely Luis Matos or Jose Buttó, not Tyler Fitzgerald or top prospect Bryce Eldridge). The deal’s not done, but it’s “extremely close,” per Rosenthal, with final terms being hashed out. [17] [14] X posts from @MLBTradeRumors and @BenKaspick echo it’s “90% there” but not finalized.”

    That is the latest.

  13. Wasn't Tibbs III an important piece of the Devers acquisition?
Now, he's in "You know who's system" — will he come back to bite the Giants 13 times a year?
All the Sox got was Dustin May, and only for a 2-month rental?
Why didn't SF get him back for Verlander or some other once-was player? Maybe they don't have anyone as good as Dustin May?
