The Giants got much better pitching from Robbie Ray and the bullpen but that meant they only lost 2-1 instead of 8-1 and the lineup continued to sputter. Key Lines:
Jung Hoo Lee CF- 3 for 4, 2B, RBI. BA= .254. Lee hit a double off the wall in Triples Alley that would have been a HR in 29 all 29 other ballparks. He was left stranded. His RBI, and the only one of the night for the Giants, came on a force out.
Robbie Ray LHP- 5.2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 3 K's, ERA= 2.93. Ray went into the 6'th inning with a 1-0 lead but got roughed up and left the game one out short of a Quality Start.
Bullpen game tomorrow trying to avoid a sweep with Matt Gage LHP opening. Kodai Senga RHP goes for the Mets sporting an ERA of 1.79.
The 9th inning ruined my afternoon. Baileys ball was a line shot at Alonzo who made a great catch. I just couldn't believe it was caught, and almost threw my phone down!
ReplyDeleteGiants had 6 line outs including one that resulted in a double play. Now THAT is some bad BABIP luck! I seem to remember a lot of line outs in key situations throughout the year. I couldn't find any records of line outs but the Giants team LD% is below league average.
DeleteRemind me again how somebody hits a line drive off the wall in TRIPLES alley, and only gets a double out of it? If he was busting out of the gate, doesn't he automatically get to third? Crazy. This team continues to amaze me.
ReplyDeleteThe ball caromed straight back to the fielder who got it to the relay guy quickly.
DeleteAny fan expecting the Giants lineup to produce better numbers are well let's say quite delusional. It's a very badly constructed lineup, where you literally have zero standout hitter a part from Devers who just got here, all the rest are .230 hitters with avg pop 15-25hr max, and no speed. Signing Lee is proving to be another waste of money where you have a guy with no pop no speed and below Avg/Obp. Would much rather have Grant McCray whom I think would have a good shot at matching Lee's numbers + the advantage of having much needed speed to this lineup. Unless management changes the way they have kept constructing this lineup, things won't improve.
ReplyDeleteJH Lee MLB .254/.318/.404/.722
DeleteMcCray AAA .261/.339/.434/.773
McCray MLB .202 /.238/.379/.617
I honestly would get "cash considerations" or "a player to be named later" for Yaz and give both Matos and McCray a roster eval for 2026. At best this is a one and done wild card team but, I don't think Melvin is the answer at manager. We need to pivot back towards an analytics-minded manager but, not to the degree of what Kapler was.
DeleteYtY reminds me of poem my mother used to quote, "always keep ahold of nurse, for fear of finding something worse." I enjoyed seeing YtY's MLB career become a reality with the Giants. He had some great moments and very cool to see the grandson of a Hall-of-Famer from my childhood have those moments. Having said that, as he approaches free agency, it's painfully obvious there is no further upside to YTY and it's past time to take some risks on finding someone better to play RF.
DeleteYaz '25 MLB: .235/.332/.363/.696
DeleteMatos '25 AAA: .272/.326/.444/.770
Matos '25 MLB: .168/.212/.364/.577
Honestly guys...Matos and McCray...really?
Come on, Mojo! Those numbers are not comparable. YtY over last 7 games: .091/.200/091. Last 15 games: .184/.298/.265. Last 30 games: .223/.322/340. YtY is 34 years old and likely nearing the end of his career. Matos is 23 yo and has 5 HR in 113 PA which projects to 26 HR in 600 PA despite playing very sporadically. McCray's number last season were put up after being rushed with just 213 PA's in AAA. Despite that he hit 5 HR in 130 PA's. It's way past time to take some risk on upside instead of limping along with a guy who is approaching both free agency and the end of his career.
DeletePerhaps there are better choices to play rather than YtY, but is any of them really worth dumping him?
DeleteArguably, a deadline trade to someone who will use him and give a low minors long shot would not be dishonorable, but the Giants are more than a cold hard "thank you, here's the door."
Neither Matos nor McCray have earned being the guy who gives YtY the door.
Agree with 100% with Mojo
Doc, you've forgotten more about prospect hounding than I'll ever know. Believe me, I value your judgment. But I have no idea how we expect players who are putting up average numbers at AAA to perform at an average level in the Majors. (Which Yaz, conservatively, most certainly is doing.) I'm not saying Yaz is the future. I'm not a fan of his. And I'm not saying Matos or McCray won't develop into solid MLB players. But they're not there yet, and it's a tough situation to improve skills at the MLB level.
DeleteWhat I am saying is neither McCray nor Ramos is better than who we have on the field. And I don't think they have a chance at developing in solid MLBers unless they have consistent ABs at a challenging (not overwhelming) level. You keep talking about Matos' HR power. But that's all he's shown in his small MLB sample size. That's not enough when you're hitting .168.
You are quoting full season numbers for McCray. He's been a lot better since mid-May. As for Matos, one more time, he has not had consistent playing time. Show me a player, any player, who can consistently hit over .200 who only plays one or two times per week. It's way past time to see if Matos can improve those numbers with regular playing time and time to see if McCray can improve on last season's numbers after over half a season of salt in AAA in which he has been quite good for 2 months now.
DeleteTheseus, you don't have to kick YtY to the curb. He is a 4'th or 5'th OF on a good team. That's what his role should be for the remainder of the season. Do you really want to see him back next season?
DeleteAlonso is having a "show you" career year @ $30M that most everyone thought was an overpay after his "downer" in 2024.
ReplyDeleteHe has an option for 2026 but, looking for a long term deal, may well test the market after the year he's having.
Bring in the fences!
