AAA: Sacramento River Cats tamed the Salt Lake City Bees 7-0.

Devin Mann 3B- 4 for 4, 2B. BA= .252.
Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 5 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 K's. ERA= 3.78.
Kai-Wei Teng seems to have found another gear. Line over his last 4 starts: 2-1, 0.46, 19.2 IP, 7 BB, 35 K.
AA: Richmond Flying Squirrels defeated the Akron Rubber Ducks 7-2.
Diego Velasquez 2B- 2 for 4, 2B, BB. BA= .273.

Seth Lonsway LHP- 7.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 7 K's, 8/1 GO/AO. ERA= 3.31.
Lonsway's longest and possibly best start of the season.
A+: Eugene Emeralds outscored the Spokane Indians 11-10.

Quinn McDaniel 2B- 1 for 5, HR(7). BA= .227.
Hoping to see more promotions once players get signed from the draft. It's not that I think Bandura and Davidson are going to blow the doors off the Eastern League or anything, but I would like to see them get a preview and head start on next season which should be at AA level.
A: Stockton Ports blanked the San Jose Giants 4-0.
Jean Carlos Sio RF/CF- 2 for 4. BA= .286.
Lisbel Diaz CF- 1 for 4, 2B. BA= .256.
Keaton Winn RHP- 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. ERA= 0.00.
Darien Smith RHP- 4 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 2 K's. ERA= 1.65.
Complex leagues has Sunday off as usual.
Tyler Fitzgerald can hit (.311) at the AAA level, but he still strikes out close to 20% of the time, 5 times more often than taking a walk.
ReplyDeleteIs this going to be his game? Can he not learn to lay off pitches outside the strike zone? When he was hitting double digit HRs it was, perhaps, ok, but is it ok with mediocre power?
Teng's performance is now hitting a sample size too big to be a total fluke. Haven't seen any definitive reporting on what's changed, but these things seem historically to be a whole mix of things all coming together: bad mechanics discovered and fixed, a new pitch introduced, injury overcome, etc. At the very least, if he keeps pushing this level, he could become a nice trade chip for someone hurting for innings.

Is it better for Bandura and Davidson to get "shut down" in the tough Eastern League to end the season or to have a "feel good" finish with Eugene and face the test next year?
ReplyDeleteThis is the question...
DeleteSince there's a stat for everything, they're should be some statistics for whether developmental prospects do better being pushed, or allowed to thrive and move up more slowly.
Where's Farhan?!
I think almost every player of any sport will tell you the way to get better is to face better competition. Feeling good is overrated.
DeleteIt would be better for them to get at least 100 at bats in AA, get their feet wet before playing there next season. It’s not true to say players get better facing better competition. We have seen that be true every year, where guys are rushed and face plant in the upper minors or majors because they aren’t ready and it messes with their psyche. Definitely wouldn’t be good to call the. Up to AA too early and have them do bad for half the season. But I don’t think it support the idea that they should get called up there to AA in order to get between 100-150 at bats. Bandura is quite old for A+ so I believe he’s just one of many players who we have seen do good in A+ (he didn’t do good last year by the way) and faulted the rest of his minor league career. Davidson is the true prospect of intrigue.
DeleteEverything in life is a balance and trade off. Nobody would suggest promoting Bandura and Davidson to AA if they were batting .200 but they both now have enough PA's in A+ that we can say it's not an illusion. I say let them spend the last month of this season seeing AA pitching so they know what they need to work on in the offseason to be ready for a full season of AA next spring.
DeleteAnd I still assert that ultimately players only get better by facing better competition but it's also true they don't get better if completely overwhelmed. So yes, you do have to consider that balance. I think Bandura and Davidson are two players who would benefit from getting an approximately one month preview of what they will face next season.
DeleteAA is fine. It’s not like they’re announcing that they are playing RF for the big club.
DeleteRichmond is playing better of late than nearly all of the first half (schedule or ?).
ReplyDeleteInfluxing Bandura and Davidson could give the Flying Squirrels a lift.
That's if the two don't get overwhelmed by AA pitching...
Jerar Encarnacion, Keaton Winn and Bryce Eldridge all headed to rehab assignments at the ACL. I look forward to seeing how they do.
