Trevor McDonald was perfect through 3 innings then inexplicably fell apart in the 4'th inning allowing 7 runs in what was ultimately a 9-run inning, a disaster inning if there ever was one. Key Lines:
The lineup managed 7 hits and 3 walks with Luis Arraez 2B the only Giant with 2 hits.
Trevor McDonald RHP- 3.2 IP, 3 H, 7 R, 1 BB, 4 K's. ERA= 4.76. The 4'th inning was one of the strangest I've ever seen. How does a team score 7 runs 3 hits and a walk? The inning goes HBP, HBP(challenged, upheld), fly out, infield single(bases now loaded), walk, double, fielder's choice(run scored, no outs recorded), Strike Out, groundball single, pitching change(Ryan Borucki LHP replaces Trevor McDonald), HBP, Double, infield single/error(Adames), Strikeout. That's how.
It seemed like a mistake at the time but in retrospect, Arraez' decision to try for an out at home on a play he could have easily gotten an out at first looms large. The next batter struck out and that would have ended the inning at 4-0 an the Giants still in the game. Instead, it led to 5 more runs and an insurmountable 9-0 White Sox lead.
As to what caused McDonald's meltdown, we've seen several minor league pitchers fall apart when having to pitch out of the stretch after a strong start to a game. Is that what happened here?
As it stands, there are only 3 MLB teams with worse records than the Giants as we close in on the 1/3 mark of the season. They have lost 4 games in a row.
Adrian Houser RHP tries to stop the latest skid this afternoon facing Bryan Hudson LHP who comes in with a 1.57 ERA. Hudson might be an Opener.
FIRE SALE TIME
ReplyDeleteone white sox player was HBP twice and in the same inning!? we know why the ace is called a stopper and the Giants have Houser going in the midst of a losing streak. that about sums up the season for me... -es
ReplyDeleteThey may not be the worst team recordwise but, to me this is the worst team in baseball and historically bad team for the franchise. Fans need to stop spending money on this awful product.
ReplyDeleteresemblinjg that 1985 team...strange as it seems, the lineup and defense looked good on paper...
DeleteYou can just go so long providing no run support before it'll wear on even the best starters. I got tired by the fourth inning of watching such an ineffective offense, especially Schmitt swinging once again at pitches two feet off the plate. Rodriguez is painful to watch as a catcher, but man can he hit!
ReplyDeleteYou knew that, despite the hype, McDonald was going to have clunkers..but that was crazy.....but..that is the 2026 SF Giants..absurd, cursed, bad and never putting it all together......And there's is just no way, with the sub standard and/or inconsistent talent that Posey has put in place for THIS YEAR as well as the unready and marginal talent being called up to play, that I can see it getting any better....Doesn't stop me from hoping that Bericoto or the next man up will be successful and the team will somehow get out of this funk but what a chore to watch!!

Hype? For McDonald? I have posted several times about how I like him as a prospect and think his extreme groundball tendency is an underrated commodity, but I don't think he's been hyped. If anything he's flown under the radar.
DeleteActually, mea culpa, I really wasn't referring to on here..More a lot of the articles/blogs I have read after 1-2 good games...I have been a McDonald fan for years and glad to see him making strides..but it seemed to me like too much was being put on his shoulders to straighten out the rotation...It's not fixable this year..Him getting experience and improving is the goal..Ditto if Whiz comes up

Does this one bad start mean McDonald should be sent down once Webb comes back? I missed last night's gane.
ReplyDeleteHe was perfect through 3 innings then ran into some inexplicable wildness and bad luck. No balls hit hard off of him and 3 inherited runs given up by Borucki. But he may still be the odd man out when Webb gets back.
DeleteNO, CERTAINLY HOPE NOT! Everyone has a clunker sometime, and his seemed to have a lot of bad luck. Now Eldridge, yes, he needs to go down until we can trade Devers.
DeleteUnfortunate for McDonald if he has to go down. He's had 1 bad start , 2 good starts, and 1 ok start against Dodgers. McDonald has options, and they're probably hoping for Mahle pitching well enough to build his trade value up. It's too bad for McDonald, he's pitched well enough to stay with big club.
DeleteFor me, I am a fan of the game of baseball. Yes, I would be a happier guy if the Giants were playing well. This has been a disatrous season. However, I will continue to go to games and to listen to the games on the radio (rarely watch games on the telly). I enjoy going to the games and almost always find something compelling happens at the ballpark. I have been a Giant fan for around 55 years. When a groundball gets hit to SS I think about how one of these SSs; Hal Lanier, Chris Speier, Royce Clayton, Omar Vizquel, Richie Aurilia and Brandon Crawford would field the ball.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, regarding boycotting the team, it seems to me that many of the attendees at the park are there for the fiesta and do not watch the game closely. I am always amazed at the money being spent at the game on food, drink and souvenirs. SF Giants ownership are making money despite the performance on the field.
The 9-run inning was actually really interesting in an awful sort of way. Then there was the 8'th inning where all the frat boys in the house took off their shirts and waved them around. That was kind of fun. Hope it doesn't get to be too much of a thing though......unless the women start doing it too! (Just kidding there).
DeleteThere's a whole shirtless thing running around MLB right now.
DeleteColorado did it a while ago, but happened again in St. Louis about a week ago (and some following games) and got a lot of media play, and now it's running here there and everywhere.
Having spent many a lazy Saturday shirtless at Candlestick in the early 80's, not sure what the big deal is. LOL.
Hello Doc! Well Ollie said to Stan! Here's another fine mess you got me into"
ReplyDeleteI loved Laurel and Hardy watching old movies grow ing up as a kid in the 50's and 60'. MY Dear old Dad God rest his soul > introduced me to the Giants one Saturday afternoon watching NBC Baseball game of the week.
I was 9 years of age and became enraptured with the Giants. I was pitching little league baseball. 9 years of age at that time. I was made a pitcher because I was the only lefthander on the team. I ended pitching through my late teens. I adopted Juan Marichal's high leg motion. Was pretty good at hiding the ball from the hitters I did ok. Hockey was my real main sport continued playing into my late thirtty's. One thing that i never lost about baseball was my love of the Giants. I thought God had rewarded me in 2010 and 12 and 14. At the time I said if the Giants never win a World Series I was Okay with that.
With all the up and downs, more downs then ups this year. I resolved again to watch and find joy however I can watching the boys play. I ain't giving up and resolve to keep positive > maybe today the break out whatever. Doc you more than any of us know as a Doctor how precious life is.So no more whining from me. Whenever i post I will talk what the positive I saw was, or if I saw nothing. Say nothing. Naysayers will be be quick to get on the bandwagon.
Take care and have a good watch.
