This was a close, interesting game until Geraldo Perdomo's 2-run double off Tyler Mahle in the 5'th inning sealed the Giants fate in losing the game and the series sweep. Key Lines:
Casey Schmitt LF- 1 for 4, HR(9), R, RBI. BA= .293. Schmitt gave the Giants an early lead with a solo HR in the first inning. Significant he started the game in LF. That's where he should play every day, at least until Heliot Ramos gets back from the IL while Bryce Eldridge DH's every day(more on that later).
Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 4, 2 R. BA= .226. If you are looking for rays of hope, Chapman is 6 for 20 over his last 5 games.
Bryce Eldridge 1 for 4, 2B, RBI. BA= .156. Eldridge doubled in the Giants second run. He hit two other balls that left the bat at over 100 MPH. He did not strike out. This on the heels of a 2-hit game on Monday and bafflingly sitting on the bench on Tuesday. IMO, Eldridge just took away any excuses for not playing him every day. Remember the Belt Wars? We now have the Eldridge Wars and isn't it interesting how similar Eldridge looks like The Captain when he's standing at home plate? This time the war is not between different factions of the fanbase. It's between the fanbase and Giants management as each excuse for him not playing regularly rolls out. First it was Tony Vitello saying the strategy was to use Eldridge as a "threat" off the bench and his willingness to accept a more limited role made his(Vitello's) job easier. Sorry for bringing up this name, but that reminds me of when the coach of the Buffalo Bills used OJ Simpson as a "decoy". The fan and analyst outrage reached the national news media and Eldridge started the next game but then sat the game after his 2-hit game. Then Mike Krukow waded into the controversy by saying he understood why Eldridge wasn't playing because he just didn't look ready to his eye. Once again the reaction was swift with fans wondering why, if he isn't ready, he is not playing every day in AAA? Now with 3 hits in his last two game, I am sure fans are locked and loaded waiting to see if he starts Friday night. Stay tuned for the next battle of the Eldridge Wars! At this point, this team has absolutely nothing to lose by letting him play and learn at the MLB level.
Tyler Mahle RHP- 5 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 0 BB, 6 K's. ERA= 6.10. It's not unusual for good starting pitchers to be slow out of the gate, but veteran SP's are supposed to be able to right the ship and limit the damage enough to give their team a chance to win in the middle and later innings. This is doubly true if they get some early run support. Giving up runs at a rate of 6 per 9 innings is not getting that done. Mahle may survive in the rotation until Logan Webb RHP gets back from the IL but if Trevor McDonald RHP is the odd man out then, the fanbase reaction may look the Eldridge Wars look like a skirmish by comparison.
I just wish I could believe that things will turn around. Right now, you need to pivot to playing the kids everyday and I've just had too many scars from this doom loop to believe that it will get better. It may be time to switch Brennan for Bericoto and give him a long leash. To me, the season is over and it's time to plan for a long rebuild.
ReplyDeleteThat's what it looks like to me but I will be happy to be wrong.
DeleteYes, Eldridge needs to play every day, if not in MLB, in AAA
ReplyDeleteKyle Harrison last nite vs.Cubs...7IP, 2H,11K, 1BB,,,oh, and 0 runs
ReplyDeleteDom Smith 2-4 last night, 3 RBIs, and a Little League style HR.
Delete(He's platooning a lot, and only has about 100 ABs this year, but still his .330 BA & .900 OPS looks mighty nice)
yes, and a good defender and seemed a high character guy
Delete...and Mauricio Dubon has been a nice (and winning) piece wherever he's gone...
DeleteI'm happy for Kyle Harrison that he was traded to the Brewers, who are helping him develop into a good starting pitcher. Brewers are good at developing young pitching. Not upset that the Giants traded him since he didn't seem to be improving while he was a Giant.
DeleteIf Vitello fails, does he take Buster with him?
ReplyDeleteOr vice versa?
Wisenhunt ERA just above 1.50 last five games further pressures the MLB rotation
ReplyDeleteHe's on the 40-man roster, been lights out for a month.
DeleteFree Whisenhunt!
At best, Will Brennan is AAAA.
ReplyDeleteHe is NOT an MLB leadoff batter: .056 OBP should be buried in a lineup if he is playing.
He is 28 yo, too little, too late...
Brennan batting lead off was a baffling decision to me. Posey did a pretty good job selling pieces last year, I’d like to see him do that again this year.
ReplyDeleteGood, thoughtful post.
ReplyDeletePlain and simple this is a BAD team in every respect..but even when they get some good things in an individual game, it gets blown up by one of the usual culprits (SP, Bullpen, weak line up, horrendous OF offense from minor league players)..Zero margin of error....This all lays at the feet of BUSTER. Thank goodness there is so much good going on in the minors that DOC recaps everyday while bringing in a little sunshine.
ReplyDeleteThat said, the MLB Giants for this year are not fixable.. So, yeah, you might as well play any kid you can unless they aren't ready. We can debate whether ELDRIDGE is ready or not but no doubt if he's up he plays. Anything else is stunning incompetence.
The only reason not to be Kids R Us, is that you want to build up the values of some of the vets to the point where they are tradeable.. As an example, MCdonald has earned a spot in the rotation joining Roupp and Whiz 's consistency has earned another shot....But it also might be good to get a few good starts from Mahle and more from Hauser to make them quasi desirable

To make the playoffs, the team should first convince posey not to sell in the trade market. He must be be looking at all offers right now.
ReplyDeleteGreat point, but we should be highlighting this even more: Casey Schmitt being able to play LF is an absolute revelation for this entire team. Even if he has hiccups, it's not like he's replacing a gold glover out there in Ramos, who has had his own "adventures" tracking fly balls. If Schmitt can play an even halfway decent LF, we can keep his bat in the lineup without having to decide between Chapman, Arraez, Devers, or Eldridge - they can all bat in the lineups. With those bats + more regular ABs for Susac > Bailey, I wonder how we'll slowly find an equilibrium and identity on offense?
ReplyDeleteWe're still on a dumpster waiting to be set aflame on the pitching end, so I think we should start considering selling off pieces ASAP. Arraez seems to be the biggest candidate to be shipped out. Who else has positive value and wouldn't just be to dump salary?
Andy in OC
Schmitt in LF is a temporary solution, unless you've given up on Heliot...would be great to find a taker for Chapman (Yankees?)
DeleteIs there any 2026 statistic that Ramos leads Schmitt?
DeleteRamos could get ABs if one of the LHBs needs a day off or any IFer.
The Giants have a 3-3 record when Ramos doesn't play, 17-27 when he does.
In his last 17 games (5-12 record, .269/.306/.448), he and the Giants have been atrocious.
.754 OPS is atrocious???!
DeleteBuster strongly rebuked a question on KNBR about this being a rebuild situation ... he and the Giants front office sound clearly like they're in full denial mode. Also, the Athletic had an interesting column today looking at the Giants' misses in the 2026 free agent pitching market and pointed to the Mahle and Houser signings as particularly questionable, whether looking at it from an offseason perspective or now.
ReplyDeleteRegarding athletic article on free agent pitching market, it's easy to 2nd guess, both pitchers have been serviceable MLB starting pitchers, Houser had a good 2025. Heard them say in the off season that they were high on a group of young starting pitchers in their system. So i thought they would sign 1 free agent pitcher and open up the other spot for young starters like McDonald to compete for. That shows how much I know.. Houser did have a good 2025. Its too early for Giants to throw in the towel.
DeleteThe Giants and the White Sox won their divisions in 2021 but lost their division series.
ReplyDeleteThey both followed with .500 records in 2022.
Then they went in opposite directions: the Sox threw in the towel and had a couple of disastrous seasons rebuilding. Now they are over .500 and contending in the AL.
The Giants chose to build while trying to contend and hung around .500 until this year but have collapsed with the next-to-worse record in the NL.
Now they meet!
Who will win?
Which plan was best?
