Carson Whisenhunt has allowed 2 runs or fewer while pitching at least 5 innings in his last 3 starts. That comes with 21 K's and 4 BB's in 16 IP. Susac continues to tear it up in his rehab assignment. A disappointing game for those looking for bullpen help for the Giants.
AA: Richmond Flyhing Squirrels outscored the Akron Rubber Ducks 9-6.

Diego Velasquez 2B- 3 for 4, 2B, HR(2). BA= .254.

Big games for Diego Velasquez and Jonah Cox. I keep waiting for Velasquez' power potential to show up. Maybe this is a start? Jonah Cox is still batting over .400 almost 6 weeks into the season.

Melvin Pineda RHP- 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 3 K's. ERA= 0.00.
Very little in the OF at SAC, perhaps 2 of Cox, Davidson and Bandura should/will be up there before too long? Great to be seeing WHIZ show some consistency.....Hope McDonald was not to disappointed with his "demotion" and continues his good pitching this weekend...LEVEL is a stud!!!

Please explain how Buster was able to get anything much less the 29th overall pick for Bailey!?!?!?
ReplyDeleteGreat job by Buster and his team getting that draft pick.
DeleteHelp me understand this. Maybe I misread somewhere... I thought draft picks cannot be traded in MLB before the draft.
DeleteIt's one of those Competitive Balance round picks and they can be traded.
DeleteFZ traded Ross Stripling and cash to The Athletics for Jonah Cox February 2, 2024.
ReplyDeleteStripling has been out of baseball since Spring last year.
Is there anything in Cox's record to believe his 2026 start for Richmond is even remotely sustainable? He would still be very good with a 100 point drop in batting average...
Jonah Cox I would be surprised if he sustained this with a batting average over .300 but at the same time I think he has the potential to surprise.
DeleteI'm pretty sure he was a 1st or 2nd round pick for the Athletics. The background is there. And he's fairly age appropriate for AA..
DeletePretty interesting. He's got some XBH in his game right now, and leads the team in SB. Enough SBs to make a bunch of singles into doubles essentially.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this trade! I hate to see Bailey leave, but dem is the breaks. He just couldn’t hit, and ultimately, that makes you a journeyman. Getting a legit 1st rounder for him AND a mid-level SP prospect is a HAUL!
ReplyDeleteI dislike this trade. 29th pick and the 13th best prospect in the Cle system. If you look at the WAR calculators it just aren’t favorable to late first round picks.
ReplyDeleteI would have taken the gamble on Bailey either figuring it out or send him to AAA to work on his bat. He has put up 10 WAR in 3 years, and been one of the best players on the team. I would have gambled on Bailey figuring it out just a little bit rather than trading him.

Buster has hinted that internal metrics are not as high on Bailey's defense as some of the published ones. Also it appears the ABS challenge system makes him less valuable than before. And he's had more than enough time to figure out the hitting part. Instead of improving it was going backwards.
DeleteI saw this handy tweet from the Baseball Trade Value account:
Delete“Today the #Guardians acquired C Patrick Bailey ($43.6M surplus trade value) from the #SFGiants in exchange for LHP Matt Wilkinson ($3.0M) and a Competitive Balance Round A Pick ($5.0M).
The deal is rejected by our model as an underpay by Cleveland.”
Even if Bailey’s defense grades lower in some internal models, I have a hard time believing there’s a full two-win gap there.
Loosing the value equation so starkly was also my frustration with the Devers trade. Once again, the Giants were the team giving up the surplus value, around $50M if I remember correctly. The deal would have looked much more balanced if Posey had only eaten the Devers’ contract with no prospects attached.
And now the Giants are feeling the loss of Harrison and Tibbs. This roster just isn’t good enough yet to consistently be on the losing side of the value equation in these trades.

From the '24 trade deadline, Bailey has the lowest OPS in baseball (Pavolvic).
DeleteBailey may figure it out. But he wasn't gonna do it here.
Agreed. A guy who has shown he can't hit, after several big years, is not going to figure out out by being sent to AAA. Bailey can't hit unless it clicks with a big league coach. That's a real long shot at this point and I'll gamble on the two YOUNG catchers who have shown they CAN hit.
DeleteThe problem with gambling on Bailey figuring out how to be a hitter is that you would lose that gamble. He has shown no evidence in the majors or minors that he’s capable of being a hitter.
DeleteNot sure the methodology for saying Bailey has $43 M surplus value. He's at 0.0 fWAR so far this season because the hitting regressed so far. I'm not buying it. Re. Devers: If you insist on always getting surplus value in any acquisition, you will never sign a free agent contract or trade for an established veteran who is already playing under a long term contract....or at least almost never. And while you complain about lack of surplus value there's a whole chorus of other fans loudly complaining that Giants ownership doesn't spend enough.
DeleteI think the math is leaning heavily into defensive capabilities (focusing hard on fWAR metrics) without considering the offensive cost.
DeleteBailey can live and profit in a solid offensive lineup. But he can't do that here.
The Jonah Cox stolen bases are "off-the-chart" for this early in the season.
ReplyDeleteJonah Cox started off two years ago in his first full season in the minors with a blistering pace with the stolen bases too before slowing down halfway through the season. He has 58 in less than 400 at bats that season
DeleteJackson Flora has been projected to be the Giants draft pick at #4 but wouldn’t it be wild if Vahn Lackey fell to the Giants at #4 and they picked up a solid defensive catcher who can really hit? Then they can use pick #29 on a pitcher in a draft year that is deep in prep arms and pretty solid on college arms in the tier below Flora.
ReplyDeleteHow about Vanh Lackey at 4
ReplyDeleteI am fine with the Bailey trade. The hitting was just too terrible and regressing. They do have prospects to replace him.
ReplyDeleteI suspect they will combine the bonus pool for 29 and their second rounder to try and snag one of those top 15 high school students otherwise committed to some fancy place like Vanderbilt.
Reports are circulating that Buster is working to have #1 prospect Roch Cholowski “float” down from 1 to 4 in the draft. It could be that Buster intends to offer Roch the extra $3M available for pick 29 for Roch.
ReplyDeleteThe acquisition of the draft pick certainly makes that possible. I am not sure that's the best use of the extra bonus pool money. There are a lot of different directions they can go but I would favor using the extra money to get some of the better high school talent later in the draft.
DeleteIsn't that the Posey Proposal? LOL
DeleteSeriously, though, wasn't Posey considered the #1 pick (possibly #2) in the '08 draft, but his signing demands caused him to drop to us (past the Rays, Royals, Orioles, Pirates) to #5?
