Game Wrap 4/1/2026: Padres 7 Giants 1

A pair of errors leading to two unearned runs were probably the difference in this game on a day the lineup once again struggled against good pitching.  Key Lines:

Luis Arraez 2B- 3 for 4, 2B, SB(2).  BA= .304.  Arraez had 3 of the Giants 4 hits and made a nifty play on defense ranging far to his left and throwing a perfect strike to Adrian Houser covering first to retire Jackson Merrill, a fast runner, in the third inning.

Adrian Houser RHP- 5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K's, 8/2 GO/AO.  ERA= 1.69.  Houser pitched well and deserved a better outcome both with more run support and with better fielding behind him.  In the first inning with 2 outs, Jackson Merrill was running on the pitch and came all the way around to score when Schmitt had the throw from Matt Chapman, which should have been out number 3, clank off his glove down the RF line.  Then in the 5'th Chapman made another throw with two outs that clanked off Schmitt's glove but this time the scorer gave the error to Chapman.  The one earned run Houser allowed came in the 6'th inning when he was obviously tiring. Without those two errors his pitch count might have been lower and he might have gotten through the 6'th before hitting his wall.

Caleb Kilian RHP- 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K's.  ERA= 0.00.  Kilian may be the comeback story of the year.

Jose Butto RHP- 0.1 IP, 3 H 4 R, 4 BB, 1 K.  ERA= 22.50.  Butto didn't have it as was having to wear it when he suffered an apparent injury.  Not sure what all was going on out on the mound but Kuip commented that Butto did not look happy.  Ryan Borucki LHP came on and got the last 2 outs.

The Giants season record drops to 2-4.  They return to Oracle Park tomorrow evening to start a 4-game series against the Mets with Robbie Ray LHP facing David Peterson LHP.

  1. This was a standard case of the Giants offensive ineptitude against good pitching. This is the stat to follow this year above all others. Giants record against other teams #1 & #2 starters. Our pitching is good enough to keep us in most games but this offense can’t hit good pitchers.

  2. The Giants had a good series winning 2 out of 3 against the Padres whom they normally struggle with. For what its worth the Mariners didnt score against Fried and schlittler either. Maybe the Giants will struggle against #1 and #2 pitchers, but a lot of teams will too.

  3. Vitello was bad for the most part today in managing the game. Susac should have started. Jerar should have played first, and leaving Butto out there was very stupid of Vitello.

    1. It wasn't clear if Butto was upset over his performance or his injury or if he thought he was left twisting in the wind too long. The combination of loss of velocity and command with complaint of elbow and forearm tightness suggests a possible UCL tear. Leaving him out there did not affect the outcome of the game but I can see why Butto might have been unhappy over it.

  4. Yes, Bailey is at the bottom of Vitello's 9-man team with a .111 BA, but there are FIVE others sub-Mandoza including Chapman with Devers @ .227 and NO HRs. None.
The Giants have 7 guys not doing their offensive jobs, but Bailey, the best defensive player on the team, has got to go?
    No.
The Giants do not have a single batter, not one, above an OPS of .668 — they have scored 14 runs in 6 games, more than half of them in one game: in the other 5 games they have scored 5 runs. They have won the 2 games that they scored 3 or more.
The team OPS is .558, only the A's in all of baseball have a lower percent, abd they have 6 HR's compared to the Giants 3, also next to the bottom in all baseball.
Blaming the 2-4 record on Bailey is not fair, and did you notice what happened when they took Bailey out last night?

  5. It's early, but Arraez is clearly the MVP of the Giants

  6. Was hoping for a Sweep but will take it. I know we are supposed to hate the Dodgers more than anybody else but, now, they come second on my hate list to the Padres (and the Mets 3rd!). I hate their histrionics and attitude and the pub they get for a team that has never accomplished a thing. At least the Dodger play the game the right way.

Anyways, as the poster mentioned above, it is going to be a season long struggle with the bats against good pitching. Hopefully, they fare better against weaker arms. Liking Winn and Killian but the bullpen still scares me to death.

Has Schmidt seen his last days at 1B??

Somebody has to get hot and have a good series, right?

    1. Not sure it's fair to him but Schmitt seems to be the consensus scapegoat so far.

    2. There's plenty of blame to go around, but Schmitt is kinda the sore thumb. Bailey at least is #1 in his primary job, but he's the first of the Giants' position players to be hit for, although Adames and Arráez have been replaced for runners.

  7. Granted, it's a Small-Sample-Size, but Devers' 420 PAs for the Giants, .235/.345/.448/.793, is pretty much the worst he has done since he was 21 years old.
    Regrets? Adjustment? Unlucky?
    Or Oracle?

    1. No, because this is the first I've heard of it, unless you are referring to an old interview that's already been hashed and rehashed many times.

    2. The one from Opening Day. Forgive me if I missed a thread earlier on your blog. Been out sick a little while!

    3. OK, I just read through it. I don't think Johnson said anything new or surprising in the Opening Day Baggs interview.
