Game Wrap 8/8/2025: Giants 5 Nationals 0

Five shutout innings from Kai-Wei Teng in bulk-inning role was the major contribution to a crisp wire-to-wire Giants win.  Key Lines:

Rafael Devers 1B- 1 for 3, HR(21), BB, R, RBI.  BA= .255.  Devers crushed a drive to R-CF just to the left of Triples Alley apex to give the Giants their first run in the first inning.

Casey Schmitt 2B- 1 for 4, HR(7), R, 2 RBI.  BA= .249.  Schmitt caught a hanging slider and launched it over the LF wall for a 2-run HR in the 6'th inning to give the Giants a 4-0 lead.  Schmitt is looking more like next year's starting 2B.

Patrick Bailey C- 2 for 4, 3B, RBI. BA= .217.  The RBI came on a single in the 8'th inning to drive in Jung Hoo LeePatty Barrels is now hitting .320 over his last 7 games, .269 over his last 15 and .263 over his last 30 easing early season fears he might never hit again.

Dominic Smith DH- 2 for 4.  BA= .279.  Smith did not figure into the scoring but extended his hit streak to 12 games in which he is batting .366.

Matt Chapman 3B- 2 for 4, 2B, RBI.  BA= .232.  Chapman's RBI came in the first inning on a bloop single to CF.  The double was roped to LF but caromed back to the fielder which kept Dom Smith from scoring and both runners were left stranded.

Kai-Wei Teng RHP- 5 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K's.  ERA= 5.40.  Teng was obviously less amped for this appearance, had great command of the fastball with a slider and changeup as plus secondary pitches.  I can definitely envision him as a #4 or 5 SP next season who eats a lot of innings.  He's a big man with an easy looking motion.

Matt Gage LHP(0.00) opened the game with as scoreless first inning.  Joey Lucchesi LHP(2.29), Jose Butto' RHP(3.33) and Tristan Beck RHP(5.40) pitched a scoreless inning each to finish up.

Carson Whisenhunt LHP tries to keep the winning going tomorrow afternoon facing Brad Lord RHP who seems to be a reliever who moved into a starting role.  He comes in with an ERA of 3.42.

Should mention that Drew Gilbert OF played in his first MLB game tonight going 0 for 4, but he played a flawless RF including a great sliding catch down by the RF line.

  1. I'd like to see more of Gilbert. His defense in RF is something to watch, but he looked overmatched at the plate. Hope he's more than just a great glove.

    1. I think Gilbert will be ok hitting. He made one swing that looked ultra fast velocity! I was surprised by it very much! His defense should be very good. They said he had the strongest arm in our outfield last night. I did see at least one very nice low strong and accurate throw from him. If he can hit .250 with that swing speed, we should be good!

  2. Good for Teng! The kid knows how to pitch and has three good pitches...all about poise and control for him! Great job by Melvin in using the closer first then Teng..and the pitching coach in helping calm Teng down. Hopefully we get the same from WHIZ today!

  3. Sitting here today, this team has the feeling of what we will see next year. Schmitt deserves to start. Ramos is out of his head and playing fine. The big signings (including Devers) have returned to form. We have issues at Catcher, OF and OF reserve and DH but Eldridge and Smith should plug that hole. Whiz and Teng, with Birdsong, give us 3 to fill two SP. Gage with Miller fill out RP nicely from the left. Not saying upgrades won’t happen but it seems like they’re in good shape. Plus we have guys moving up in minors.

    1. Bailey's bat has been at least adequate for over a month now and his D is still tops in MLB by a wide margin. The catcher hole is probably more about finding a serviceable back up.

    2. And I think they should sign at least one veteran pitcher to replace Verlander(assuming they don't re-sign him).

  4. Fun to see Teng pitch well and get his 1st MLB win, that game will be memorable for him years from now. Schmidt made a big defensive play in the 5th inning keeping the Nats 3rd hit of the inning from going to the outfield. Has Schmidt gained some weight. He s developing into a young slugger, what a swing he had on his homer on a hanging slider. I like how he's developing as a mlb player.

    1. Casey Schmitt has always been solidly built but he may have bulked up just a bit.
