We'll probably never know how seriously they were about trying to sign him. It's intriguing that they were rumored to be involved right to the end. One thing we have to remember here is just because the BoSox got him for $72 M, which is a very substantial number, it's not guarantee the Giants could have gotten him for $73 M or $75 M or even $80 M. We simply don't know how high the Red Sox were willing to go. It sounds like it got into a bidding war at the end. The Giants tend to shy away from those and I don't blame them.DrBGiantsfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10699322384438591979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-2638292788639734202014-08-22T13:44:03.668-07:002014-08-22T13:44:03.668-07:00About time for Ray Black. A bad contract could really hurt us. I love that it looked like we were involved to the last days of the bidding.

I agree with getting in the bidding for Cespedes. He is a proven player with power, defense and one hell of an arm. I heard some stats that were ridiculous about Cespedes. The A's before the trade has a .620 winning percentage when he was in the lineup and around .300 when he was not in the lineup. Talk about a game changer. Maybe that is why the A's have gone downhill right after he left.Rogernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-668317107717606462014-08-22T12:14:12.746-07:002014-08-22T12:14:12.746-07:00Ray Black and Mr. Smith up to SJ from Augusta. Last time we gave out big money was Barry Zito and Aaron Rowand. We didn't give Hunter Pence big money until he was already a Giant. So, when you say $72MM is a bargain I do agree to a point because spread out over 7 years it is relatively low risk. But, I know that is not how the Giants operate. I bet you the Giants were probably in at the $50-55MM range. When the bidding got above $60MM they probably hit the eject button. I was just being realistic.Rogernoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-21450503335767980342014-08-22T11:39:48.170-07:002014-08-22T11:39:48.170-07:00First, Rusney only cost money and the Giants have ...First, Rusney only cost money and the Giants have plenty of it.
