Here are some quotes from scouting reports I've read:

"Defense needs a lot of work to be acceptable." John Sickels of Minorleagueball.

"….a first baseman only with limited baserunning ability." Dan Farnsworth of Fangraphs.

"…he lacks speed and is limited to first base as a pro." The article talked about how Shaw insisted to scouts prior to the draft that, no matter who drafted him, he would insist on seeing the remainder of the season through with his team. He was known as the heart of his team and also the Captain, and everything that was discussed there (in addition to the interview below) made it very clear to see that the kid as a LEVEL head on his shoulders, does not fold under pressure, but simultaneously has a very high drive to help and ensure his team wins.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AOggeXe2xI

In addition, watching his highlight clips, he's got a trim (though solid) build for a power hitter. He can move around the bases very decently when he gets headway. It's all about reactions and routs in terms of his ability to play in the OF - and that comes with experience and maturity - if he has any knack for it at all. The knack, that's what I'm associating with a high general IQ and a high baseball IQ.RainBallhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00725941337502884436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-73081822284318134672016-08-22T07:00:12.360-07:002016-08-22T07:00:12.360-07:00What does intelligence and game IQ have to do with...What does intelligence and game IQ have to do with running fast enough to track down line drives into the alleys? Also, maybe you could provide some evidence for this "obvious intelligence & game IQ" you speak of. Not saying he doesn't have it, but what evidence do you have that he does?DrBGiantsfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10699322384438591979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-14989198429515556222016-08-22T06:35:26.218-07:002016-08-22T06:35:26.218-07:00Hmm, bummer. That's not what I'd think given the kid's obvious intelligence & game IQ, but I'll accept the assessments given.

In two years, what do the Giants do with him then? They can't keep giving up on great bats (Duffy to a certain degree, certainly Duvall) just to round out the positions available.Rainballnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-4831336622794794072016-08-21T15:06:50.690-07:002016-08-21T15:06:50.690-07:00From everything I've read, Shaw would be Schwa...From everything I've read, Shaw would be Schwarberesque in LF. Really like the look of his season and the way the FO went about his year 1 development curve.

Shaw has a very Brandon Belt feel about him in his offensive acumen (minus the walk rate), and I think it's time to move him to the OF to find the man a permanent home away from 1B.
