Ruiz, Rollins, and Utley were 32, Howard 31, Ibanez 39, Polanco 35, Victorio 30 -- Pence at 28 was the only regular under 30. Howard, injured on the final out of the losing effort in the NLDS, would only play 71 games and be a non-factor the next year. Their senior pitchers from 2011, Halladay and Lee, missed starts in 2012. The youngest -- their Bumgarner -- Cole Hamels led with 31 starts.
Since the 94-win 2012, the Giants have not won even 90 games in a season, will have a losing record 2 of the last 5 seasons, and 2015 was only 3 over an 81-win .500 season.
It will be difficult to fix the power-gap, the outfield will only be marginally better at best, the rotation improved with Bumgarner but what else, and everyone a year older.
Even a 25-win improvement might not make the playoffs.
Standing pat is not an option.
IMO, the BABIP gods will have to be appeased mightily to be a contender next year. I believe about 50% of their collapse is due to bad luck but that means 50% is due to other factors. I have said over and over that with the increase in power numbers around the league, they need to find more power, particularly out of 3B and LF. That is short term. Long term, they need to draft more and better pitching and draft hitters with more athleticism and power. They also need to do a better job of signing and developing international talent.

I don't think they need to burn the ship down to the waterline but they also cannot just stand pat.DrBGiantsfanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10699322384438591979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-41038954940090255352017-07-16T07:53:50.872-07:002017-07-16T07:53:50.872-07:00Sometimes nothin' said is 'nuff said.
Tha...Sometimes nothin' said is 'nuff said.
That probably applies to Gerrin and especially Okert in the 9th. The only out they got was a sacrifice bunt!

Haven't we complained about the Giants needing to play guys batting below Mendoza?

The Padres won last night starting a trio of them: Blash (.152 at gametime), Sanchez (.155 at gametime) and Szczur (.188 at gametime), plus Aybar batting .235, having been below .200 into June.

Is it possible that San Diego is better than San Fran? Pads are 5 games in front of the Giants and are 5-2 head-to-head.

Is suggesting that the Giants will rebound in 2018 any more realistic than the Padres rebounding?

The Phillies won the NL East 5 years in a row, with consecutive World Series appearances, and a Championship in 2008. Four years after winning 102 games in 2011, they lost 99, beating Miami in the last game of the season to avoid 100 losses.

This happens to teams, and we don't think it will happen with the Giants, but ...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7389427040394111033.post-84341307229172082502017-07-16T03:30:02.077-07:002017-07-16T03:30:02.077-07:00Though I only got to watch the first four innings,...Though I only got to watch the first four innings, it was a good start all things considered.
